In this paper, we describe the development of a device for fuming fingerprints with cyanoacrylate (Super Glue) to enable police tactical units to obtain fingerprint evidence from suspicious packages using a remote-controlled robot. Through a series of initial experiments and preliminary designs, we show that effective cyanoacylate fuming requires sufficient heat, humidity, and airflow. This work led to the development of a final working prototype, called robot accessory for fuming fingerprint evidence (RAFFE), which is currently being field tested by the Calgary Police Service.

Printers are exposed to a wide variety of irritants and sensitizers. Allergy developing from a single exposure to any compound is rare. We report two cases of workers in the printing industry who developed allergic contact dermatitis to 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate (HDDA) within a short period of exposure. The first developed within weeks of exposure to a plastic sheet primed with HDDA. The second developed after a single accidental exposure.

Fused deposition modeling (FDM), the most widely used additive manufacturing (AM) technology, is gaining considerable interest in the surgical sector for the production of single-use surgical devices that can be tailor-made according to specific requirements (e.g., type of patient surgery, specific shapes, etc.) due to its low cost, ease of access to materials (3D-printing filament), and the relatively low complexity. However, surgical 3D-printing parts should resist sterilization treatments without losing structural, mechanical, and dimensional accuracy. Thus, in this work, 3D-filaments based…

The structural application of 3D printed concrete (3DPC) is still constrained by the difficulty of qualifying a layered, process-dependent material using standards developed mainly for cast concrete and conventional masonry. This review examines 3DPC through masonry construction to clarify how interface-controlled behaviour should be interpreted, tested and standardised. The comparison is not based on material similarity, but on the shared structural role of joints, interfaces and assemblage-level load transfer. Most previous reviews mainly discuss printability, mixture design, material develo

Over the last few years, additive manufacturing, by means of fused deposition modelling 3D printing, has become increasingly popular and accessible due to the relative low costs, flexibility, and continually lowering barriers for entry. Unfortunately, while this technology is not only used by hobbyists for creative or practical creation of custom objects using a variety of thermoplastic materials, they can also be used in the manufacture of firearms. From fully printed to hybrid designs, AM/3D printing has been used to produce parts for fully functional firearms capable of discharging conventi…

Stereolithography (SLA) 3D printing has become a standard tool to produce microfluidic structures, thanks to advancements in both 3D printer technology and resin materials. Used across many applications, SLA-printed microfluidics are often exposed to a variety of solvents, giving rise to potential leaching from the printed structure (in the form of unreacted resin components) that can potentially interfere with device functionality. In this study, we investigated the leaching behavior of SLA-printed structures from both external surfaces (under static conditions) and microfluidic surfaces (und…

BACKGROUND: Personalized 3D-printed bone models are becoming increasingly popular in clinical care. Common applications include the visualization of idiopathic deformities or complex joint fractures. Functionalizing such printed replicas in terms of individual mechanical properties holds great potential for clinical training and research but is challenging due to the complexity of the bone structure. This study aims at developing a parametrizable structure as a substitute for spongious bone by simplifying 3D reconstruction and printing. METHODS: 43 vertebrae from 6 body donors aged 86.8 ± 7.8 …

Catalytic biomass valorization into value-added chemicals is crucial to reduce reliance on fossil resources and mitigate environmental impacts. However, more than 90% of chemical manufacturing still relies on conventional catalysts, underscoring the need for sustainable alternatives. Three-dimensional (3D) printing offers unique opportunities to design catalysts with tailored geometries and pore architectures, enhancing mass transfer, active site accessibility, and reusability. Most reviews of 3D-printed catalysts focus on small molecule reactions such as ammonia decomposition or methanol dehy…

This study provides an initial understanding of print awareness, a foundational literacy skill, in a group of 12 unhoused children at two shelters in a large urban setting. Children ranged in age from 4;1 to 8;0, representing grades associated with learning to read (i.e., pre-kindergarten to second grade). Findings indicate that the majority of children in this sample were significantly delayed in their acquisition of print awareness skills. Caregivers were surveyed regarding their beliefs about supporting literacy development and what would be beneficial for helping them in this area. Respons
