BACKGROUND Three-dimensional (3D) printed models have been recently introduced for diagnosis and preprocedural planning for percutaneous interventions or surgery in cardiovascular disease. CASE REPORT We treated a 71-year-old woman with angina. Although we performed coronary angiography, we could not engage the catheters for the left coronary artery (LCA). Then, we withdrew the catheter and examined her anatomy using coronary computed tomographic angiography (CCTA). The CCTA revealed that the LCA originated from the noncoronary cusp (NCC). Because anomalous LCA originating from the NCC is a ra

INTRODUCTION: Autologous reconstruction of segmental craniomaxillofacial bone defects is limited by insufficient graft material, donor site morbidity, and need for microsurgery. Reconstruction is challenging due to the complex three-dimensional (3D) structure of craniofacial skeleton. Customized 3D-printed patient-specific biologic scaffolds hold promise for reconstruction of the craniofacial skeleton without donor site morbidity. The authors report a porcine craniofacial defect model suitable for further evaluation of custom 3D-printed engineered bone scaffolds.
METHODS: The authors created

STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study.
PURPOSE: To evaluate the utility and limitations of using three-dimensional (3D)-printed models for the management of craniovertebral (CV) junction abnormalities.
OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: In comparison to other bony and vascular anomalies, CV junction abnormalities are difficult to treat. For cases of irreducible atlantoaxial dislocation (AAD), posterior reduction and stabilization have replaced anterior decompression as the standard management protocol. The use of 3D models, such as those described herein, can provide surgeons with in-depth knowledge of the v

Bone tissue engineering technology based on scaffold has been applied for cleft lip and palate treatment. However, clinical applications of patient-specific three-dimensional (3D) scaffolds have rarely been performed. In this study, a clinical case using patient-specific 3D-printed bioresorbable scaffold with bone marrow stromal cells collected from iliac crest in the operating room has been introduced. At 6-month after transplantation, the bone volume of the newly regenerated bone was approximately 45% of the total defect volume. Bone mineral density of the newly regenerated bone was about 75

BACKGROUND: Stabilization of microcatheters during coiling after their optimal shaping are key factors for successful endovascular coil embolization of cerebral aneurysms. However, stabilization and optimal shaping of microcatheters are sometimes difficult. Our aim was to introduce "tailor-made" microcatheter shapes for coil embolization using three-dimensional (3D) printed vessel models.
METHOD: Since August 2014, we have been investigating the use of 3D printed models of intracranial arterial aneurysms to produce optimally shaped microcatheters for endovascular coil embolization. Using Digi

A method of producing a composite model consisting of a three-dimensional printed mandible bearing plaster teeth is presented. Printed models were obtained from cone beam computed tomograms (CBCT) of dry human mandibles. The plaster casts of the teeth were obtained from impressions of the teeth of the dry mandibles. The distorted teeth of the printed models were removed and replaced by the plaster casts of the teeth using a simple transfer jig. The accuracy of the composite models obtained from six mandibles was assessed from laser scans. The scans of the dry mandibles and the composite models

This study introduces the design and clinical application of a novel magnetic-connection digital osteotomy guide to enhance the precision and efficiency of segmental maxillary osteotomy. Segmental Le Fort I osteotomy is an essential technique for correcting complex transverse and vertical dental-maxillofacial deformities, yet traditional methods involving manual plaster model surgery are prone to significant errors. To address these challenges, this protocol integrates virtual surgical planning (VSP) using CT scans and specialized modeling software to create a patient-specific, 3D-printed two-

INTRODUCTION: We conducted an initial orthopaedic resident-based evaluation of a novel three-dimensionally (3D) printed model simulating a displaced, unstable distal radius fracture (DRF). We hypothesized the model would have construct validity, enhance beginner resident performance when used for teaching, and be rated as beneficial.
METHODS: Thirty-three residents across all postgraduate years (PGY) from multiple institutions participated. We gathered baseline clinical DRF experience levels for each through Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education case logs. We block randomized 1

Orthopedic oncology has begun to use three-dimensional-printing technology, which is expected to improve the accuracy of osteotomies, ensure a safe margin, and facilitate precise surgery. However, several difficulties should be considered. Cadaver and clinical studies have reported more accurate osteotomies for bone-tumor resection using patient-specific cutting guides, especially in challenging areas such as the sacrum and pelvis, compared to manual osteotomies. Patient-specific cutting guides can help surgeons achieve resection with negative margins and reduce blood loss and operating time.

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional (3D)-printed customized implants can be fabricated and utilized for all bones with massive bone defects. The main safety issues with 3D-printed implants made of Ti6Al4V alloy are related to the release of metal debris and residual powder. In this study, we investigated the perioperative titanium concentrations in whole blood and peri-implant fluid samples of patients who underwent limb salvage surgery with a 3D-printed Ti6Al4V implant.
METHODS: Nineteen patients who underwent limb salvage surgery with 3D-printed Ti6Al4V implants were divided into two groups: the

Silicon-based planar microelectronics is a powerful tool for scalably recording and modulating neural activity at high spatiotemporal resolution, but it remains challenging to target neural structures in three dimensions (3D). We present a method for directly fabricating 3D arrays of tissue-penetrating microelectrodes onto silicon microelectronics. Leveraging a high-resolution 3D printing technology based on 2-photon polymerization and scalable microfabrication processes, we fabricated arrays of 6,600 microelectrodes 10-130 μm tall and at 35-μm pitch onto a planar silicon-based microelectrode
