The effect of hip manipulation on muscle strength, proprioception and motor tests of basketball players during training.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to (i) investigate the effects of diagonal manual therapy on gluteus medius activation and (ii) examine its impact on quadriceps femoris activation, both critical for lower limb stability. METHODS: Nine male basketball players (mean age 23.8 ± 4.1 years) participated in a randomized crossover trial, with measurements taken before the intervention, immediately after, and following a training session. Muscle activation of the gluteus medius, tensor fascia lata, and quadriceps was assessed via EMG, alongside evaluations of proprioception, the Y-Balance Test, and St…

Comprehensive clinical effect evaluation of low-frequency electrical stimulation combined with proprioception training in sports injury rehabilitation.

Lateral ankle sprains in martial arts athletes frequently leave persistent proprioceptive and neuromuscular deficits. This prospective cohort study evaluated whether adding low-frequency electrical stimulation (LFES) to proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) augments recovery. Five hundred sixty athletes with grade I-II sprains (mean age 22.6 ± 2.7 years) were stratified to LFES + PNF (n=280) or proprioception-only (n=280) for 12 weeks, with assessments at baseline and Weeks 2, 6, and 12. Outcomes included pain (VAS), pressure pain threshold (PPT), ankle range of motion (ROM), joint p…

Relationship Between Postural Stability and Proprioception, Pain, Quadriceps Strength, and Muscle Tightness in Athletes With Patellar Tendinopathy.

BACKGROUND: Athletes with patellar tendinopathy (PT) have postural stability deficits; however, the underlying mechanisms and factors responsible remain unknown. The effect on postural stability in PT of decreased quadriceps strength, altered proprioception, lower-limb muscle tightness, and knee pain, which explain postural stability deficiency in other populations, is uninvestigated. HYPOTHESIS: Proprioceptive acuity, muscle tightness, quadriceps strength, and pain predict postural stability in athletes with PT. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional comparative study. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 2. …

Linear and Non-linear Dynamic Methods Toward Investigating Proprioception Impairment in Non-specific Low Back Pain Patients.

Central nervous system (CNS) uses vision, vestibular, and somatosensory information to maintain body stability. Research has shown that there is more lumbar proprioception error among low back pain (LBP) individuals as compared to healthy people. In this study, two groups of 20 healthy people and 20 non-specific low back pain (NSLBP) participants took part in this investigation. This investigation focused on somatosensory sensors and in order to alter proprioception, a vibrator (frequency of 70 Hz, amplitude of 0.5 mm) was placed on the soleus muscle area of each leg and two vibrators were pla…

Contribution of hip joint proprioception to static and dynamic balance in cerebral palsy: a case control study.

BACKGROUND: Balance problems are common in cerebral palsy (CP) but etiology is often uncertain. The classic Romberg test compares ability to maintain standing with eyes open versus closed. Marked instability without vision is a positive test and generally indicates proprioceptive loss. From previous work showing diminished hip joint proprioception in CP, we hypothesized that static and dynamic balance without vision (positive Romberg) would be compromised in CP. METHODS: Force plate sway and gait velocity data were collected using 3D motion capture on 52 participants, 19 with diplegic CP, 13 …

Bilateral Mechanoreception Discrimination based on Bihemispheric Somatosensory Response Patterns is Associated with Proprioception and Motor Function After Stroke.

OBJECTIVES: Stroke commonly impairs proprioception and motor function, yet the cortical sensory processes underlying these impairments remain poorly understood. Prior electrophysiological studies have primarily focused on the average magnitude of unilateral cortical sensory responses to vibration, potentially overlooking distributed and trial-to-trial features of sensory processing that may be functionally relevant to proprioceptive processing and motor performance. We therefore aimed to characterize bilateral cortical sensory responses to determine their relationships with proprioceptive and …

Periarticular Proprioception: Analyzing the Three-Dimensional Structure of Corpuscular Mechanosensors in the Dorsal Part of the Scapholunate Ligament.

INTRODUCTION: Sensory nerve endings transmit mechanical stimuli into afferent neural signals and form the basis of proprioception, giving rise to the self-perception of dynamic stability of joints. We aimed to analyze the three-dimensional structure of periarticular corpuscular sensory nerve endings in a carpal ligament to enhance our understanding of their microstructure. METHODS: Two dorsal parts of the scapholunate ligament were excised from two human cadaveric wrist specimens. Consecutive cryosections were stained with immunofluorescence markers protein S100B, neurotrophin receptor p75, p…

Repeatability of joint proprioception and muscle torque assessment in healthy children and in children diagnosed with hypermobility syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Impairment of joint proprioception in patients with hypermobility syndrome (HMS) has been well documented. Both joint proprioception and muscle torque are commonly assessed in patients with musculoskeletal complaints. It is unknown, however, if these measures change significantly on repeated application in healthy children and in children with HMS. AIM: To investigate the between-days repeatability of joint proprioception and muscle torque in these groups. METHODS: Twenty children (10 healthy and 10 with HMS), aged eight to 15 years, were assessed on two separate occasions (one w…

Proprioception after rehabilitation and reconstruction in knees with deficiency of the anterior cruciate ligament: a prospective, longitudinal study.

We assessed proprioception in the knee using the angle reproduction test in 20 healthy volunteers, ten patients with acute anterior instability and 20 patients with chronic anterior instability after reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). In addition, the Lysholm-knee score, ligament laxity and patient satisfaction were determined. Acute trauma causes extensive damage to proprioception which is not restored by rehabilitation alone. Three months after operation, there remained a slight decrease in proprioception compared with the preoperative recordings, but six months after re…

Variability in cross-modal proprioceptive judgements impairs upper-limb function across the lifespan.

Proprioceptive deficits are thought to contribute to age-related decline in upper-limb function. We aimed to estimate the effect of proprioceptive ability on upper-limb function under an explicitly specified causal framework and to determine whether this effect varied with age. A causal graph was developed to outline plausible relationships among proprioceptive ability, upper-limb function, and related factors (e.g., age, tactile acuity, cognition, and muscle strength). A total of 184 healthy individuals (18-95 yr; 98 females and 86 males) completed a test battery. Proprioception was assessed …

Non-invasive somatotopic proprioceptive feedback for closed-loop robotic hand aperture control.

Objective.Current robotic prostheses developed for individuals with transradial amputation often lack physiological feedback, particularly proprioceptive information, which limits control precision and increases reliance on vision.Approach.This study investigates the effect of introducing non-invasive somatotopic feedback using transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) to convey hand aperture information, as an artificial form of proprioceptive feedback. Twenty healthy participants with intact limbs were divided into two groups: one receiving TENS-based feedback and one without feedba
