The effect of age on susceptibility to noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), the effect of gender on the interaction of age-related hearing loss (ARHL) and NIHL, and the relative contributions of ARHL and NIHL to total hearing loss are poorly understood. The issues are difficult to resolve empirically in human subjects because of lack of control over extrinsic variables and for ethical reasons. Accordingly, these issues were examined in a well-studied animal model of both ARHL and NIHL, the Mongolian gerbil. Animals were exposed to an intense tone (3.5 kHz, 113 dB SPL, 1 h) either as young adults

The overshoot effect can be reduced by temporary hearing loss induced by aspirin or exposure to intense sound. The present study simulated a hearing loss at 4.0 kHz via pure-tone forward masking and examined the effect of the simulation on threshold for a 10-ms, 4.0-kHz signal presented 1 ms after the onset of a 400-ms, broadband noise masker whose spectrum level was 20 dB SPL. Masker frequency was 3.6, 4.0, or 4.2 kHz, and masker level was 80 dB SPL. Subject-dependent delays were determined such that 10 or 20 dB of masking at 4.0 kHz was produced. In general, the pure-tone forward masker did

The present database contains brain activity of subjective tinnitus sufferers at identifying their sound tinnitus. The main objective of this database is to provide spontaneous Electroencephalographic (EEG) activity at rest, and evoked EEG activity when tinnitus sufferers attempt to identify their sound tinnitus among 54 tinnitus sound examples. For the database, 37 volunteers were recruited: 15 ones without tinnitus (Control Group - CG), and 22 ones with tinnitus (Tinnitus Group - TG). For EEG recording, 30 channels were used to record two conditions: 1) basal condition, where the volunteer r

OBJECTIVES: Existing evidence suggests a strong relationship between tinnitus and emotion. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of short-term emotional changes along valence and arousal dimensions on tinnitus outcomes. Emotional stimuli were presented in two different modalities: auditory and visual. The authors hypothesized that (1) negative valence (unpleasant) stimuli and/or high arousal stimuli will lead to greater tinnitus loudness and annoyance than positive valence and/or low arousal stimuli, and (2) auditory emotional stimuli, which are in the same modality as the tin

HYPOTHESIS: The goal of this investigation was to determine, in patients with sensorineural hearing loss who may show an audiologic alteration in onset overmasking, whether different pathologic conditions differ in this respect, and whether patients with a vestibular neurotomy damaging the cochlear efferents will be affected.
BACKGROUND: Auditory detection of brief signals, when presented at the beginning of a simultaneous long masking sound, may require a higher acoustic level than when presented after several hundred milliseconds. The proposed explanation, in terms of auditory nerve fibers

There is growing interest in how the brain's motor systems contribute to the perception of musical rhythms. The Action Simulation for Auditory Prediction hypothesis proposes that the dorsal auditory stream is involved in bidirectional interchange between auditory perception and beat-based prediction in motor planning structures via parietal cortex [Patel, A. D., & Iversen, J. R. The evolutionary neuroscience of musical beat perception: The Action Simulation for Auditory Prediction (ASAP) hypothesis. Frontiers in Systems Neuroscience, 8, 57, 2014]. We used a TMS protocol, continuous theta burst

The physiology of the medial olivocochlear reflex suggests that a sufficiently long stimulus (>100 ms) may reduce cochlear gain and result in broadened frequency selectivity. The current study attempted to avoid gain reduction by using short maskers (20 ms) to measure psychophysical tuning curves (PTCs) and notched-noise tuning characteristics, with a 4-kHz signal. The influence of off-frequency listening on PTCs was evaluated using two types of background noise. Iso-level curves were derived using an estimate of the cochlear input/output (I/O) function, which was obtained using an off-frequen

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine whether the processing of temporal fine structure diminishes with age, even in the presence of relatively normal audiometric hearing. Temporal fine structure processing was assessed by measuring the discrimination of interaural phase differences (IPDs). The hypothesis was that IPD discrimination is more acute in middle-aged observers than in older observers but that acuity in middle-aged observers is nevertheless poorer than in young adults.
DESIGN: Two experiments were undertaken. The first measured discrimination of 0- and π-radian inte

Neuronal gain adaptation has been proposed as the underlying mechanism leading to the perception of phantom sounds such as Zwicker tones and tinnitus. In this gain-adaptation theory, cochlear compression plays a significant role with weaker compression leading to stronger phantom percepts. The specific aim of this study was to find a link between the strength of neuronal gain adaptation and cochlear compression. Compression was assessed using distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs). Gain adaptation is hypothesized to manifest itself in the sensitization observed for the detection of

PURPOSE: Eight lines of evidence implicating the dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN) as a tinnitus contributing site are reviewed. We now expand the presentation of this model, elaborate on its essential details, and provide answers to commonly asked questions regarding its validity.
CONCLUSIONS: Over the past decade, numerous studies have converged to support the hypothesis that the DCN may be an important brain center in the generation and modulation of tinnitus. Although other auditory centers have been similarly implicated, the DCN deserves special emphasis because, as a primary acoustic nucleu

Superficial siderosis (SS) of the central nervous system has been thought to be a rare condition that generates progressive hearing loss, ataxia, pyramidal signs, and dementia. The main cause of hearing loss by SS is thought to be neuronal. Because there is no histopathologic report of the human temporal bone in SS, there is a debate about the possibility of cochlear involvement. We present a 25-year-old man who was investigated for bilateral progressive sensorineural hearing loss and vestibular failure after head trauma. On brain MRI, SS of the central nervous system was detected. Distortion

Auditory filter shape and frequency tuning may be derived by measuring changes in pure tone thresholds as a function of the bandwidth of notched-noise maskers. When these psychophysical methods were applied to CBA/CaJ mice, the resulting filter shapes were well fit by roex(p,r) functions originally developed for human subjects. The equivalent rectangular bandwidths (ERBs) of the filter shapes ranged from 16 to 19% of test frequencies between 8 to 16 kHz. These ERBs correspond well to the performance of humans at high frequencies and the limited number of mammalian species that have been charac

The objectives of this study were to measure suppression with bandlimited noise extended below and above the signal, at lower and higher signal frequencies, between younger and older subjects, and between subjects with normal hearing and cochlear hearing loss. Psychophysical suppression was assessed by measuring forward-masked thresholds at 0.8 and 2.0 kHz in bandlimited maskers as a function of masker bandwidth. Bandpass-masker bandwidth was increased by introducing noise components below and above the signal frequency while keeping the noise centered on the signal frequency, and also by addi

A two-part study was undertaken to investigate warning signal detection by motorcyclists. First the acoustic environment was established for both the helmeted and bareheaded rider between speeds of 0 and 100 mph. For the helmeted rider it was found that below 20 mph vehicle noise was dominant and between 20 and 40 mph there was a variable contribution from both vehicle and wind noise. At 40 mph wind noise became the dominant sound source and increased linearly with the log10 of speed from 90 dB(A) to reach 112 dB(A) at 100 mph. Sound levels were consistently 18 dB(A) greater for the bareheaded

Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) currently affects over 20 million adults in the U.S. and its prevalence is expected to increase as the population ages. However, little is known about the earliest manifestations of ARHL, including its influence on auditory function beyond the threshold of sensation. This work explores the effects of early aging on frequency selectivity (i.e., "tuning"), a critical feature of normal hearing function. Tuning is estimated using both behavioral and physiological measures-fast psychophysical tuning curves (fPTC), distortion product otoacoustic emission level ratio f

Recognizing the identity of others by their voice is an important skill for social interactions. To date, it remains controversial which parts of the brain are critical structures for this skill. Based on neuroimaging findings, standard models of person-identity recognition suggest that the right temporal lobe is the hub for voice-identity recognition. Neuropsychological case studies, however, reported selective deficits of voice-identity recognition in patients predominantly with right inferior parietal lobe lesions. Here, our aim was to work towards resolving the discrepancy between neuroima
