Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is the second most common inherited cause of intellectual disability (ID), after Down syndrome. The severity of ID in FXS patients varies and depends mainly on the patient's sex. Besides intellectual disorders, additional symptoms, such as psychomotor delay, a specific behavioral phenotype, or emotional problems are present in FXS patients. In over 99% of the cases, the disease is caused by the presence of a dynamic mutation in the FMR1 gene localized on the X chromosome. Due to the expansion of CGG nucleotides (over 200 repeats), FMR1 gene expression is decreased and

Neurodevelopmental disorders are associated to functional anomalies of the brain that become manifest early on in life. Traditionally, they have been related almost exclusively to the appearance of intellectual disability and delayed psychomotor development. The causes of these disorders have been partially described, and include anomalies due to genetic causes (Down syndrome, fragile X syndrome, etc.), exposure to toxic factors during pregnancy (foetal alcohol syndrome), infections (cytomegalovirus, toxoplasmosis, etc.) or other alterations, including a status of great immaturity at birth (ve

INTRODUCTION: Major depressive disorder (MDD), one of the most common disorders in medical practice and one of the leading causes of disability worldwide, is frequently comorbid with anxiety disorders. Vortioxetine (Lu AA21004) is a new antidepressant that combines a number of neurotransmitter reuptake and receptor effects that have been thought to predict efficacy as a treatment for depressive and anxiety disorders.
AREAS COVERED: This review summarizes the pharmacology and neurobiology of vortioxetine. Studies of its efficacy and tolerability in major depression and generalized anxiety diso

Defects in the synthesis pathways of amino acids have only been discovered in recent years and are relatively unknown to most clinicians. In this chapter disorders neurological symptoms caused by genetic defects in the synthesis of the amino acids serine, glutamine and proline are discussed. Patients with serine deficiency invariably suffer from severe neurological symptoms such as microcephaly, psychomotor retardation and intractable seizures. The same is true for patients with a defect in the synthesis of glutamine who present with hypotonia and epileptic encephalopathy. Patients with a diso

The case of a 4 years old boy, hospitalized for an unexplained coma, is reported. He is the first child of a non-consanguin couple. The psychomotor development of this child was considered as normal up to the age of 18 months; then, a delay in language development, behaviour disorders with an important instability interrupted by episodes of somnolence, were observed. This child was treated for psychotic disorders. At the age of 3 and half, he had two episodes of seizures associated with fever. He was hospitalized for a 24 hours coma (4 years old). An hepatomegaly and a dry, brittle hair were t

INTRODUCTION: Autism spectrum disorder, also referred to in this study as autism, is a neurodevelopmental chronic disease that manifests early in childhood by impairment in social interaction, communication and repetitive behavior. Since there are no specific biomarkers available, the diagnosis is based exclusively on clinical criteria. The purpose of the present study is to determine which are the early psychomotor development or neurodevelopmental milestones that present a significant correlation with the severity of the main symptoms of autism, development quotients, and adaptive function.

OBJECTIVE: To review the published findings relevant to migraine and driving performance, with an intent to encourage discussion on research which may broaden understanding in this area and help educate healthcare providers and their patients.
BACKGROUND: Motor vehicle crashes result in more than 35,000 deaths and more than 2 million injuries annually in the United States. Migraine is one of the most prevalent diseases in the world, and many symptoms associated with migraine attacks have the potential to negatively influence driving ability.
METHODS: We reviewed the published findings relate

We review changes in body representation in patients with brain hemisphere damage and discuss their relationship with impaired limb movements in peripersonal space, navigation between objects/obstacles and control of the body's general posture and balance. The egocentric representation of the body's median sagittal axis (considered as the main zone around which movements are anchored) has been studied in most detail. This reference is distorted in patients with spatial neglect and involves a combination of ipsilesional translation and contralesional tilt. There are clear links with the patient

Eighty-five percent of mentally retarded people have mild mental retardation (MR). Severe MR has a probable or definitive causes in 80% of cases. 2/3 are prenatal, 1/6 perinatal and 1/6 postnatal. Metabolic disorders may manifest as MR and its progressive nature often is not observed at the time of evaluation. MR is a prominent finding of many hereditary metabolic diseases, but only a fraction of MR seen in daily practice is due to inborn errors of metabolism. Medical conditions may present as MR without major extraneurological changes. In the investigation of MR, developmental milestones of a

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impaired social skills, motor and perceptual atypicalities. These difficulties were explained within the Bayesian framework as either reflecting oversensitivity to prediction errors or - just the opposite - slow updating of such errors. To test these opposing theories, we administer paced finger-tapping, a synchronization task that requires use of recent sensory information for fast error-correction. We use computational modelling to disentangle the contributions of error-correction from that of noise in keeping temporal intervals, and i

Myhre syndrome is a rare disorder caused by a heterozygous mutation in the SMAD4 gene. Affected patients may exhibit dysmorphic facial features, intrauterine growth retardation, short stature, obesity, muscle hypertrophy, thickened skin, limited joint movement, hearing impairment, and varying degrees of psychomotor developmental disorder. Serious complications of the cardiovascular and respiratory system may be seen later in life. We report the case of a Chinese boy with Myhre syndrome presenting with a novel symptom of giant testicles where treatment with growth hormone combined with letrozol

We diagnosed the carbohydrate-deficient glycoprotein syndrome in five children who were seen during their first year of life with failure to thrive, feeding difficulties, psychomotor retardation, hypotonia, esotropia, inverted nipples, lipodystrophy, pericardial effusion, and hepatic dysfunction. Steatosis was observed in liver biopsy specimens, and cerebellar hypoplasia was present on computed tomography. The disorder is characterized by a complex carbohydrate deficiency in certain glycoproteins, notably transferrin, which can be used as a marker of the disease. The carbohydrate-deficient gly

The Rett syndrome is a progressive disorder which is associated with regression of psychomotor development and precipitous deceleration of brain growth during the first year of life. General histopathological surveys in postmortem specimens have identified degeneration of subpopulations of neurons of the nigrostriatal system but no other evidence of degenerative process. Magnetic resonance imaging-based morphometry may usefully guide application of rigorous but demanding quantitative histologic search for evidence of neuronal degeneration. The volumes of the principal set of cortical and nucle

Familial nephrogenic diabetes insipidus is a hereditary disorder, generally transmitted by sex-linked recessive genes with varying degrees of penetrance in females. The onset of this disorder occurs in infancy, usually characterized by unexplained fever, recurrent dehydration and failure to thrive. If left unrecognized, recurrent hyperosmolality and hypernatremia will lead to retarded growth and neurologic sequelae. Intracranial hemorrhage, consciousness disturbance and even mortality may occur in cases of acute dehydration episodes. We report on two families with nephrogenic diabetes insipidu

BACKGROUND: Persistent impairment in cognitive function has been described in euthymic individuals with bipolar disorder. Collective work indicates that obesity is associated with reduced cognitive function in otherwise healthy individuals. This sub-group post-hoc analysis preliminarily explores and examines the association between overweight/obesity and cognitive function in euthymic individuals with bipolar disorder.
METHODS: Euthymic adults with DSM-IV-TR-defined bipolar I or II disorder were enrolled. Subjects included in this post-hoc analysis (n=67) were divided into two groups (normal

Background: Italy was one of the first European countries adopting the need for treatment criteria for compulsory admission (CA). The aim of the present study was to confirm whether CA in an urban setting in Italy was compliant with the requested clinical criteria. Methods: In this retrospective observational study, we retrieved all collected information regarding CA in Turin (Italy) from January 2006 to December 2013. All content and data reported in the CA forms, including diagnosis and clinical details, were gathered and analyzed. Comparisons between CA with and without a diagnosis of DSM-I
