Knowledge about osteoporosis and its related factors among public health nurses in Taiwan.

Although osteoporosis prevention has been identified as a critical issue for women and the elderly population, some health professionals still misunderstand osteoporosis. Public health nurses (PHNs) are responsible for health promotion and disease prevention in community populations. The objective of this study was to investigate PHNs' knowledge of osteoporosis and its related factors. A cross-sectional research design was used: 678 subjects from 3,300 PHNs who worked at health centers in Taiwan during 2000 were selected by cluster random sampling to participate in this study; 539 of them retu

Healthcare workers' knowledge and attitudes towards sterilization and reuse of medical devices in primary and secondary care public hospitals in Nepal: A multi-centre cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare facilities reprocess and sterilize reusable medical devices before each invasive clinical procedure, such as surgery, to prevent person-to-person or environmental transmission of pathogens through medical devices. We conducted a nationwide multi-centre cross-sectional survey in primary and secondary-care public hospitals in Nepal to assess the knowledge and attitudes of healthcare workers towards sterilization and reuse of medical devices. METHODS: We carried out a multi-centre cross-sectional survey comprising eleven primary-care (two district-level and nine district h

Reducing consequences of child maltreatment during adulthood by public health actions: a Delphi study.

BACKGROUND: Child maltreatment (CM) is associated with long-lasting poor health outcomes, as well as increased levels of disability and health-services consumption across the life-span. However, less is known about how CM consequences can be reduced during adulthood. We investigated professional opinions on how to mitigate long-term consequences of CM in a public health (PH) perspective. METHODS: Using the Delphi method in three rounds, we inquired 91 professionals, mostly European researchers and clinicians about potential PH actions to mitigate CM consequences during adulthood. RESULTS: Mo

Cholera Epidemic - Lusaka, Zambia, October 2017-May 2018.

On October 6, 2017, an outbreak of cholera was declared in Zambia after laboratory confirmation of Vibrio cholerae O1, biotype El Tor, serotype Ogawa, from stool specimens from two patients with acute watery diarrhea. The two patients had gone to a clinic in Lusaka, the capital city, on October 4. Cholera cases increased rapidly, from several hundred cases in early December 2017 to approximately 2,000 by early January 2018 (Figure). In collaboration with partners, the Zambia Ministry of Health (MoH) launched a multifaceted public health response that included increased chlorination of the Lusa

Extending public health: the Rockefeller Sanitary Commission and hookworm in the American South.

The Rockefeller Sanitary Commission for the Eradication of Hookworm Disease (1909-1914) fielded a philanthropic public health project that had three goals: to estimate hookworm prevalence in the American South, provide treatment, and eradicate the disease. Activities covered 11 Southern states, and Rockefeller teams found that about 40% of the population surveyed was infected. However, the commission met strong resistance and lacked the time and resources to achieve universal county coverage and meet project goals. We explore how these constraints triggered project changes that systematically

Assessing capacity for surveillance, prevention, and control of West Nile virus infection--United States, 1999 and 2004.

Indigenous human disease caused by West Nile virus (WNV) was first identified in the United States in August 1999 in the greater New York City area. By the end of 2004, human WNV disease had been reported in all states except Washington, Hawaii, and Alaska, and WNV transmission to humans had been documented by five routes: mosquito bites (principally from Culex spp.), blood transfusions, organ transplantation, transplacental transfer, and breastfeeding. During 1999-2005, a total of 19,525 cases of WNV disease in humans and 771 deaths were reported in the United States. In 2000, CDC first publi

[A public health intervention at the time of a case of rabies in Quebec].

BACKGROUND: In the fall of 2000, a nine-year-old child living in Montreal (Québec) died of rabies encephalitis. Cases of human rabies had not been reported in Canada for 15 years. The molecular characterization of viral nucleic acid implicated the Ln/Ps variant associated with the silver-haired bat and the eastern pipistrelle. This article describes and analyzes the intervention carried out by public health. INTERVENTION AND DISCUSSION: The investigation revealed that contact with the bat must have occurred while the child was sleeping. Following the search for close contacts of the reference

Smallpox and bioterrorism: public-health responses.

There is great concern that smallpox could be used for bioterrorism. The disease has a high mortality rate and can be spread by aerosols, and immunity in the population is low. Although an initial release of smallpox could infect a large number of people, secondary spread would likely be slow because of the long incubation period and the close contact required for transmission. Hospital personnel and household contacts are at the greatest risk of becoming infected. An outbreak of smallpox will be controlled through surveillance, containment, vaccination, and isolation of cases-the strategy use

Should genetic health care providers attempt to influence reproductive outcome using directive counseling techniques? A public health prospective.

Many areas of agreement exist among genetic health care (GHC) professionals (i.e., MD and PhD clinical geneticists, master's level genetic counselors, and others) and public health (PH) professionals. However, there are in our opinion at least two areas or tenets where a distinct difference of opinion exists. Two tenets widely expressed by prenatal GHC professionals are: (1) they should never attempt to influence the outcome of a pregnancy, and (2) they should only use non-directive genetic counseling techniques. From a PH perspective, these tenets could be viewed in some instances as counterp

[Gynecological screening or cervical screening? Conflicts between clinical and public health viewpoints].

The "gynecological screening" that is composed of complex gynecological examination including colposcopy and cytological examinations has traditionally been incorporated into the gynecological protocol and practice. Over the past few decades, unfortunately, this screening practice has entrenched in the mind both of the gynecological community and the general public. As a result, the government-supported, organized cervical screening program of the population has come to a standstill. In order to adjust the cervical screening practice to the international public health recommendations in which

Public Health Knowledge, Preparedness, and Professional Identity Among Veterinary Students: A Multi-Institutional Survey of AVMA-Accredited Programs.

Veterinarians work at the intersection of animal, human, and environmental health, yet integration of public health and One Health competencies across veterinary curricula remains poorly characterized. An anonymous, cross-sectional online survey of DVM/VMD students enrolled in AVMA COE-accredited or provisionally accredited veterinary schools worldwide evaluated knowledge, perceived training adequacy, confidence, professional identity, and career intentions related to public health and One Health. The 32-item instrument was analyzed using descriptive statistics and inductive thematic analysis.
