Correlates and Racial/Ethnic Differences in Bareback Sex Among Men Who Have Sex with Men with Unknown or Negative HIV Serostatus.

Men who have sex with men (MSM), particularly racial/ethnic minority MSM, are disproportionately affected by HIV in the United States and Texas. Bareback sex or condomless anal intercourse (CAI) can be a high HIV risk behavior. Despite this, a majority of MSM continues to engage in barebacking. Research suggests racial/ethnic differences in barebacking exist; however, these conclusions remain unclear due to insufficient sample sizes to compare racial/ethnic groups. Our cross-sectional correlational design explores barebacking correlates (substance use during sex, safe sex fatigue, and optimist

Racial minorities are under-represented in SLE clinical trials: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: With numerous emerging treatments for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), it is imperative that clinical trials include diverse populations reflective of those with SLE, especially active disease. Epidemiological data from North America and Europe indicate that the prevalence of SLE is disproportionately higher among Black populations compared to White populations, relative to their distribution in the general population. The objectives of this study were to examine the racial composition of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in SLE from 2014 to 2024, assessing whether these trial

Achieving Equity in Informed Consent: A Culturally-Informed Perspective for the Consideration and Consent of Minority Patients for Electroconvulsive Therapy.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is highly efficacious to treat severe depression in older adults. Yet, patients of ethnic and racial minorities are consistently underrepresented amongst those who receive ECT across all age groups. One strong hypothesis to explain this disparity is that minority patients are less likely to trust medical professionals and are therefore less likely to consent for ECT. Increasing participation of depressed, elderly, minority patients is uniquely challenging. Senior minority individuals have survived decades of medical and social injustices that no other demographi

Human leukocyte antigen in the allocation of kidneys from cadaveric donors in the United States.

Minorities wait longer for a cadaveric donor kidney transplant than whites. For example, the median waiting time to transplant for candidates listed from 1997 to 1998 was 874 days for whites, 1,493 days for blacks, 1,281 days for Hispanics, 1,491 days for Asians, and 1,466 days for others. The current allocation algorithm has been criticized as contributing to decreased access to transplants for racial minorities. There are two levels in the current algorithm: The first is mandatory national sharing between donors and patients with zero human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-A, B, and DR mismatches. Th

Which girls, which boys? The intersectional risk for depression by race and ethnicity, and gender in the U.S.

We sought to conduct the first systematic review of studies applying an intersectional lens to assessing risk and protective factors for depression in minority adolescents in the United States. Twenty-five studies were identified which investigated the role of racial and ethnic identity and gender for minority groups and how marginalization may be associated with differential outcomes in depression symptomology. The results showed substantial variability in whether studies intentionally operationalized intersectionality through theoretical frameworks, study design, sampling, and analyses. Stud

Sleep Facilitates Coping: Moderated Mediation of Daily Sleep, Ethnic/Racial Discrimination, Stress Responses, and Adolescent Well-Being.

Using a daily diary design and actigraphy sleep data across 2 weeks among 256 ethnic/racial minority adolescents (Mage  = 14.72; 40% Asian, 22% Black, 38% Latinx; 2,607 days), this study investigated how previous-night sleep (duration, quality) moderated the same-day associations between ethnic/racial discrimination and stress responses (rumination, problem solving, family/peer support seeking) to predict daily well-being (mood, somatic symptoms, life satisfaction). On days when adolescents experienced greater discrimination, if they slept longer and better the previous night, adolescents enga

Structural Racism and Lung Cancer Risk: A Scoping Review.

IMPORTANCE: Structural racism is associated with persistent inequities in health and health outcomes in the US for racial and ethnic minority groups. This review summarizes how structural racism contributes to differential population-level exposure to lung cancer risk factors and thus disparate lung cancer risk across different racial and ethnic groups. OBSERVATIONS: A scoping review was conducted focusing on structural racism and lung cancer risk for racial and ethnic minority groups. The domains of structural racism evaluated included housing and built environment, occupation and employment

Racial and Ethnic Differences in Risk Factors and Prodromal Symptoms That Predict Eating Disorder Onset: A 3-Year Prospective Study of Adolescent Girls and Young Women.

Background/Objective: Our current knowledge regarding ethnic/racial differences in the incidence of and risk factors for eating disorder onset is relatively limited. We examined whether the baseline prevalence and incidence of onset of any eating disorder over follow-up and the risk factors that predict future onset of any eating disorder differ for various ethnic/racial groups. Methods: Data were collected from females across a wide age range (N = 1952; White = 61%, Hispanic = 17%, Asian = 14%, Black = 5%, and Native American = 3%; M baseline age = 19.7, SD = 5.7; baseline age range: 13-64) w…

Prior differences in previous trauma exposure primarily drive the observed racial/ethnic differences in posttrauma depression and anxiety following a recent trauma.

BACKGROUND: Racial and ethnic groups in the USA differ in the prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Recent research however has not observed consistent racial/ethnic differences in posttraumatic stress in the early aftermath of trauma, suggesting that such differences in chronic PTSD rates may be related to differences in recovery over time. METHODS: As part of the multisite, longitudinal AURORA study, we investigated racial/ethnic differences in PTSD and related outcomes within 3 months after trauma. Participants (n = 930) were recruited from emergency departments across the US

HLA and disease associations in Iraq.

The HLA system is deeply involved in susceptibility to a variety of diseases. Relationships between HLA and diseases are of considerable interest and importance, as they provide new tools for studying the inheritance, classification, and pathogenesis of these diseases. Studies on the distribution of HLA antigens in different populations have revealed the existence of racial variation and are therefore a prerequisite for studying HLA and disease associations in different racial groups. This study reviews six articles concerning HLA and disease in the Iraqi population. A comparison of these asso…

Public response to an anthrax attack: a multiethnic perspective.

The 2001 anthrax attacks emphasized the need to develop outreach that would more effectively support racial/ethnic minority populations during a bioterrorism incident. Given the importance of antibiotic prophylaxis in a future anthrax attack, it should be a priority to better support racial/ethnic minorities in mass dispensing programs. To examine the needs and perspectives of racial/ethnic minorities, this study used a nationally representative poll of 1,852 adults, including 1,240 whites, 261 African Americans, and 282 Hispanics. The poll examined public reactions to a ''worst-case scenario'

Sex and racial disparities in catheter ablation.

Sex and racial disparities in the presentation, diagnosis, and management of cardiac arrhythmias are recognized. Sex-specific differences in electrophysiological parameters are well known and are predominantly related to differences in ion channel expression and the influence of sex hormones. However, the relationship between hormonal or racial influence and arrhythmia mechanisms, presentation, and management needs to be better defined. Women and racial and ethnic groups are less likely to undergo catheter ablation procedures for treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. Underrepresentation of women a

Individual and Social Risk and Protective Factors as Predictors of Trajectories of Post-traumatic Stress Symptoms in Adolescents.

The present study elucidates heterogeneity in post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) across adolescence in a sample of youth who have experienced myriad types and combinations of potentially traumatic events (PTEs), including substantiated physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect and/or at least one other self-reported PTE. A machine learning technique was used to assess a multivariate set of variables (e.g., PTEs, individual risk and protective factors, social risk and protective factors, and racial and ethnic minority status) as predictors of PTSS trajectory group membership. The sample included

Improving Health Equity and Reducing Disparities in Pediatric and Adolescent/Young Adult Oncology: In Support of Clinical Practice Guidelines.

Despite extraordinary strides in cancer therapy over the past 30 years, racial/ethnic, socioeconomic, and age-related survival disparities persist. Hodgkin lymphoma offers an excellent paradigm to understand these disparities because successful approaches are well established in both the up-front and relapsed treatment settings. The following review, which accompanies the 2021 NCCN Guidelines for Pediatric Hodgkin Lymphoma, suggests that systemic inequities in cancer care disproportionately affect minority and low-income children, adolescents, and young adults, and directly contribute to obser

Race-based sexual stereotypes and their effects on sexual risk behavior in racially diverse young men who have sex with men.

Men who have sex with men (MSM) are disproportionately impacted by the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the United States. The epidemic is not evenly distributed across MSM, and young racial minority MSM experience the highest rate of new infections. Race-based sexual stereotyping is not uncommon among MSM, and it may contribute to the isolation of racial minority sexual networks, which has been found to contribute to increased HIV incidence in Black MSM. The goals of these analyses were to describe the race-based sexual preferences and stereotypes of racially diverse young MSM (YMSM), and to examine whet
