Microglial development is altered in immature spinal cord by exposure to radiation.

Previous studies in this laboratory have documented that the microglial environment of the immature spinal cord is altered by exposure to ionizing radiation. As a result, the lumbosacral spinal cord is markedly depleted of both oligodendrocytes and astrocytes, while leaving axons and the overall cytoarchitecture intact. The status of the microglia in the irradiated region is unknown and is of interest given the interactions between microglia and astrocytes recently elucidated by others. This study uses both in vivo and in vitro approaches to examine the microglial population in normal and irra

Occupational exposure to radiation induces an adaptive response in human lymphocytes.

The in vitro pretreatment of phytohaemagglutinin stimulated human lymphocytes with tritiated thymidine or with low doses of X-rays induces a response that makes these cells less susceptible to further genetic damage induced by subsequent high doses of radiation. This phenomenon has been called 'Adaptive Response' because it is similar to the one described in E. coli. In the present study, we describe that lymphocytes irradiated in vitro at 2 Gy, from individuals occupationally exposed to X and gamma rays, show lower frequencies of dicentrics than those from non-occupationally exposed individua

Influence of the age of mice at exposure to radiation on life-shortening and carcinogenesis.

Female B6C3F1 mice were irradiated on day 17 prenatal age, or day 0, 7, 35, 105, 240 or 365 postnatal age with 0.95, 1.9, 2.85, 3.8 or 5.7 Gy of gamma-rays from 137Cs. They were allowed to live out their entire life spans under specific pathogen free conditions. All the mice were given autopsies at death and were examined histologically for neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases. The mice in the early postnatal period were most sensitive to the life-shortening effect of radiation. The shortening effect of irradiation given during the late fetal period was almost the same as that given during t

How significant are the risks from occupational exposure to ionizing radiation?

Radiologists and other physicians practicing in specialties where their principal operational procedures involve the use of ionizing radiation have health risks associated with their occupational exposures. Based on two years of film badge records from this institution, it was estimated that the general radiologists received an annual occupational dose equivalent of 350 mrems. The corresponding doses for therapeutic radiologists and those practicing special procedures and cardiac catheterization were 110 mrems and 550 mrems. The estimated excess cancer deaths for general radiologists would be

Emesis, radiation exposure, and local cerebral blood flow in the ferret.

We examined the sensitivity of the ferret to emetic stimuli and the effect of radiation exposure near the time of emesis on local cerebral blood flow. Ferrets vomited following the administration of either apomorphine (approx 45% of the ferrets tested) or peptide YY (approx 36% of those tested). Exposure to radiation was a very potent emetic stimulus, but vomiting could be prevented by restraint of the hindquarters of the ferret. Local cerebral blood flow was measured using a quantitative autoradiographic technique and with the exception of several regions in the telencephalon and cerebellum, …

[Measures for reducing exposure to scattered radiation in urologic roentgen diagnosis].

A simple device to reduce the urologic examiner's exposure to radiation is presented. The doses the examiner and his assistant staff are exposed to performing various methods of urologic radiodiagnosis were measured and the following exposure to radiation determined with and without radioprotective device. The measurements demonstrate, that already by simple measures considerable reduction of the exposure to radiation can be obtained for examiner and assistant personnel. The frequently neglected importance of scattered radiation resulting from urologic radiography is discussed.

[Possibility of inducing the adaptive response of cells to exposure to ionizing radiation].

Mechanisms of induction of the antimutagenic and anticarcinogenic adaptive repair response of cells to the effect of alkylating substances and other genotoxic agents are discussed. The possibility of induction of adaptive repair response of mammalian cells to low-level radiation is suggested.

Karyotypic findings in a case of prolymphocytic leukemia with a history of radiation exposure.

Cytogenetic examination, utilizing B- and T-cell mitogens, of the peripheral blood lymphocytes of a patient with the prolymphocytic variant of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and a history of radiation exposure revealed two abnormal clones. One clone with 48 chromosomes (+t(6;12),6q-, +12,14q+) may be derived from CLL cells, whereas the clone with 46 chromosomes and a ring #11 possibly originated from normal T and/or B cells affected by past irradiation.

An evaluation of several methods for assessing the effects of occupational exposure to radiation.

Several methods for the analysis of occupational radiation exposure data, including procedures based on Cox's proportional hazards model, are presented and evaluated. Issues of interest include the contribution of an external control, the effective handling of highly skewed exposure data, and the potential for detecting effects in populations occupationally exposed to radiation. Expressions for evaluating the power of various procedures are derived and applied to data from the Hanford population in order to determine power curves for detecting leukemia effects, with both additive and multiplic…

Radiation Exposure in the Orthopaedic Surgeon: Guidelines, Impact, and Reduction Techniques.

Exposure to ionizing radiation is a common occupational hazard for the orthopaedic surgeon, ubiquitous among subspecialities. There are known detrimental effects of radiation exposure including cataracts and increased cancer risk. It is imperative for both practicing orthopaedic surgeons and trainees to recognize that these risks exist and to understand what effect our occupational exposure can have over the length of a career. The purpose of this review is to highlight current recommendations and guidelines regarding ionizing radiation dose exposure, summarize the available literature specifi…

Occupational radiation exposure in a nuclear medicine department in Bogotá, Colombia.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the radiation exposure received by workers in the nuclear medicine department of a private hospital in Bogotá, Colombia, during the period 2022-2023. The Hp (10) and Hp (0.07) readings for 15 workers including nuclear medicine (NM) physicians, nurses, and technologists who performed tasks in PET/CT and SPECT/CT were retrieved and analysed retrospectively. The results showed that in 2022, the average accumulated Hp (10) values for NM physicians, nurses, and technologists were, 1.5 ± 0.3 mSv, 1.9 ± 0.4 mSv, and 2.1 ± 0.6 mSv, respectively. Compared with…

PAE planning: Radiation exposure and image quality of CT and CBCT.

PURPOSE: To determine accurate organ doses, effective doses, and image quality of computed tomography (CT) compared with cone beam CT (CBCT) for correct identification of prostatic arteries. METHOD: A dual-energy CT scanner and a flat-panel angiography system were used. Dose measurements (gallbladder (g), intestine (i), bladder (b), prostate (p), testes (t), active bone marrow of pelvis (bmp) and femura (bmf)) were performed using an anthropomorphic phantom with 65 thermoluminescent dosimeters in the pelvis and abdomen region. For the calculation of the contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) of the pe

A Historical Survey of Key Epidemiological Studies of Ionizing Radiation Exposure.

In this article we review the history of key epidemiological studies of populations exposed to ionizing radiation. We highlight historical and recent findings regarding radiation-associated risks for incidence and mortality of cancer and non-cancer outcomes with emphasis on study design and methods of exposure assessment and dose estimation along with brief consideration of sources of bias for a few of the more important studies. We examine the findings from the epidemiological studies of the Japanese atomic bomb survivors, persons exposed to radiation for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes, t
