The use of fixatives for response to a radiation dispersal devise attack--a review of the current (2009) state-of-the-art.

Radiation dispersal devices (RDDs), or dirty bombs, are terrorist weapons designed to scatter radioactive materials in large urban areas. Although the main intent of a RDD is to produce general panic and chaos, other impacts such as health, environmental, property and economical damage may also occur. Although one certain method of reducing health risks from a RDD event is to remove the radioactive contaminants from the environment immediately, rapid cleanup after a RDD event may be impossible in many cases. However, preventing the migration of the radioactive contaminant is crucial. Although

The neutron component of two high-energy photon reference fields.

The 4.4 MeV photon reference field described in ISO 4037 is produced by the (12)C(p,p')(12)C (E(x) = 4.4389 MeV) reaction using a thick elemental carbon target and a proton beam with an energy of 5.7 MeV. The relative abundance of the isotope (13)C in elemental carbon is 1.10%. Therefore, the 4.4 MeV photon field is contaminated by neutrons produced by the (13)C(p,n) (13)N reaction (Q = -3.003 MeV). The ambient dose equivalent H*(10) produced by these neutrons is of the same order of magnitude as the ambient dose equivalent produced by the 4.4 MeV photons. For the calibration of dosemeters, es

External dosimetry and personnel monitoring.

The early history of our profession, as well as the discoveries that form its foundations, provide an interesting background on which to assess our progress in measuring exposure to ionizing radiation (i.e., dosimetry). One of the first challenges faced by scientists working with radiation and radioactivity was appropriate measurement techniques. has provided an excellent review of the history and development of radiation detection techniques and devices. In the early 20th century, some of these techniques were extended to measurements of the doses received by the individual scientists althoug

A nine-year evaluation of emergency department personnel exposure to ionizing radiation.

Emergency department personnel experience potential occupational hazards from exposure to ionizing radiation (x-rays). To assess this risk, ionizing radiation exposure was analyzed during a nine-year period for 128 ED personnel. The group consisted of 21 physicians, 92 nurses, and 15 ancillary personnel. Exposure was measured for both penetrating and nonpenetrating radiation using standard film dosimeter badges. Film badge use compliance was 66.7% for physicians, 86.2% for nurses, and 86.7% for ancillary personnel. Penetrating radiation exposure averaged 0.12 mrem/month for physicians, 0.70 mr

Assessment of effective dose from concomitant exposures required in verification of the target volume in radiotherapy.

The requirement of the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulation 2000 [IR(ME)R] of justifying all exposures to ionizing radiation includes those from radiotherapy double exposure portal images resulting in exposure to normal tissues outside the treatment volume. Typical effective doses were calculated for a range of common sites using CT data to outline those parts of specific organs subject to concomitant radiation and generate dose-volume histograms. The product of the mean dose and the relative probability of inducing a fatal cancer in specific organs was used to determine a represen

Cushing's disease: radiation therapy.

The usual first treatment for Cushing's disease is surgical removal of the pituitary adenoma. In patients in whom surgery is unsuccessful or who decline an operation, radiation to the pituitary offers the possibility of remission. No form of radiation delivery results in immediate control of cortisol production. Thus, until radiation treatment becomes effective, medical therapy to lower cortisol production is indicated. The time to remission with radiation therapy cannot be predicted, medical therapy should be discontinued every 6 months to assess response to radiation treatment; a normal 24 h

In vitro analysis of the suitability of different biodosimetric techniques for the study of human biomonitoring with low concentrations of Radon-222.

Human exposure to radionuclides from naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) varies according to daily activities and proximity to natural radioactive sources in the environment. Studies conducted in municipalities of Recife's metropolitan region detected radionuclides, such as radon, in food, soil, atmosphere, and well water. However, human biomonitoring in this population remains necessary. This study evaluates the suitability of biodosimetric techniques to be applied in regions of NORM occurrence and investigates the correlation between DNA damage and low Rn222 concentrations. Perip

Ethical Issues Related to the Promotion of a "100 mSv Threshold Assumption" in Japan after the Fukushima Nuclear Accident in 2011: Background and Consequences.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article describes the debates in Japan regarding the 100 mSv threshold assumption and ethical issues related to it, and explores the background to distorted risk information and absence of risk communication in Japan. Then we seek proper risk communication based on scientific evidence. RECENT FINDINGS: On March 11, 2011 an accident occurred at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant due to the Great East Japan Earthquake. Since then a number of misunderstandings have become common in Japan as a result of public statements by the Japanese and local governments that ha

Estimation of Effects of Filtration and Ventilation on Worker Inhalation Dose from Aerosols Produced during Nuclear Decommissioning Processes.

During the decommissioning of nuclear power plants, radioactive contaminants may be released into the work environment in the form of aerosols, which can expose workers through inhalation, ingestion, and submersion pathways. During dismantlement work, aerosol concentrations may increase due to release from materials. Typical engineering controls to reduce concentrations include air exchange as well as air filtration, which captures aerosols at their source. This work presents a model of radioactive aerosol concentration to estimate the reduction of (a) effluent aerosol concentration into the e

Assessment of tracheobronchial and lung dose due to radon and thoron inhalation.

The main sources of natural background radiation are radon, thoron and their progeny, which may cause health risks to humans. Keeping in mind the importance of the subject, three samples each from 10 selected residential areas, including the centre of Babylon Governorate, Iraq, and its districts, were collected. Concentration of radon and thoron was measured using solid-state track detectors (CR-39). The arithmetic means of the concentration of radon and thoron were 47.367±19.56 and 133.246±16.585 Bqm-3, respectively; these values are considered safe when compared with the upper reference leve

A Gaussian-plume based Monte Carlo method for calculating radiation dose in the near field of buildings.

A Monte Carlo (MC) programme was written using the dose point kernel method to calculate doses in the roof zone of a building from nearby releases of radioactive gases. A Gaussian Plume Model (GPM) was parameterised to account for near-field building effects on plume spread and reflection from the roof. Rooftop recirculation zones and building-generated plume spread effects were accounted in a novel Dual Gaussian Plume (DGP) formulation used with the MC model, which allowed for the selection of angle of approach flow, plume release height in relation to the building and position of the release

THE VALIDATION OF COMPREHENSIVE SOFTWARE FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF RADIOLOGICAL IMPACTS ON HUMANS THROUGH BENCHMARK ANALYSIS WITH RADIOLOGICAL CODES.

In this paper, a novel domestic code called KIANA was developed for the assessment of radiological impacts on the population in normal and accident conditions including design basis accident (DBA) and beyond DBA (BDBA) for the nuclear power plants. The validation process of the KIANA code was performed using the results of the DOZA_M radiological code, whose results are presented in the Final Safety Analysis Report (FSAR) of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant Unit One (BNPP-1). The calculations of KIANA are performed based on the Gaussian diffusion model. The developed KIANA code has the potentia

MICROWAVE DIATHERMY IN PHYSIOTHERAPY: INTRODUCTION AND EVALUATION OF A QUALITY CONTROL PROCEDURE.

Microwave diathermies (MWDs) are electromagnetic (EM) radiation emitting systems that are used by physiotherapists for thermotherapy treatment. Although this form of therapy is widely available in most physiotherapy units worldwide, management of the equipment is not obligatory addressed either by clinical engineers or medical physicists. A novel quality control (QC) protocol for MWD equipment, examining mechanical, electrical and electronic condition, the power output and EM radiation distribution in the electrotherapy room, was used during a national QC survey. The results of the survey reve

Measuring and assessing individual external doses during the rehabilitation phase in Iitate village after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident.

After the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident in 2011, Iitate village was placed under an evacuation order because the level of radioactive materials drifting from the nuclear plant to the village was above a government-set level for allowing residents to live in the area. The evacuation advisory for most of the village was lifted on 31 March 2017. For displaced residents deciding whether or not to return to their homes, it is important to correctly understand and estimate the realistic individual external doses they will receive after returning to the village. In this study, with t

Radiation-induced chain reactions in alcohol solutions of diphenyliodonium salts: a high-sensitivity chemical dosimeter.

Chain reactions in gamma-irradiated 2-propanol solutions of diphenyliodonium salts have been studied. Protonic acids were generated in the irradiated solutions with high yields, whereas acid formation as a result of thermal reactions was negligible. The solution can be used as a high-sensitivity chemical dosimeter. The G value of acidic protons increases with increasing concentration of diphenyliodonium salt at the lower concentrations because the reaction rate of a propagation reaction increases. However, the chain is limited by a termination reaction between phenyl radical and the iodonium s

Measurements of clinically significant doses of ionizing radiation using non-invasive in vivo EPR spectroscopy of teeth in situ.

There are plausible circumstances in which populations potentially have been exposed to doses of ionizing radiation that could cause direct clinical effects within days or weeks, but there is no clear knowledge as to the magnitude of the exposure to individuals. In vivo EPR is a method, perhaps the only such method that can differentiate among doses sufficiently to classify individuals into categories for treatment with sufficient accuracy to facilitate decisions on medical treatment. Individuals with significant risk then can have appropriate procedures initiated immediately, while those with
