The Trinity nuclear test was detonated in south-central New Mexico on 16 July 1945; in the early 2000s, the National Cancer Institute undertook a dose and cancer risk projection study of the possible health impacts of the test. In order to conduct a comprehensive dose assessment for the Trinity test, we collected diet and lifestyle data relevant to the populations living in New Mexico around the time of the test. This report describes the methodology developed to capture the data used to calculate radiation exposures and presents dietary and lifestyle data results for the main exposure pathway

Removing phosphate from alkaline high-level waste sludges at the Department of Energy's Hanford Site in Washington State is necessary to increase the waste loading in the borosilicate glass waste form that will be used to immobilize the highly radioactive fraction of these wastes. We are developing a process which first leaches phosphate from the high-level waste solids with aqueous sodium hydroxide, and then isolates the phosphate by precipitation with calcium oxide. Tests with actual tank waste confirmed that this process is an effective method of phosphate removal from the sludge and offers

Exceptional elevation of children's leukemia appearing 5 years after the 1983 startup of the Krümmel nuclear power plant, accompanied by a significant increase of adult leukemia cases, led to investigations of radiation exposures of the population living near the plant. The rate of dicentric chromosomes in peripheral lymphocytes of seven parents of children with leukemia and in 14 other inhabitants near the plant was significantly elevated and indicated ongoing exposures over the years of its operation. These findings led to the hypothesis that chronic reactor leakages had occurred. This assum

New scientific findings based on the latest epidemiological analyses for lung cancer risk due to radon have been demonstrated. The residential radon concentration is mainly measured by passive radon detectors. Although the passive radon detector is usually designed to detect radon efficiently and exclusively, several types of them can detect thoron together with radon. In this case, these detector readings may include both radon and thoron signals. If the readings are overestimated, the lung cancer risk will be given as a biased estimate when epidemiological studies are carried out. In our exp

This work consists of two parts. In the first part, the doses in the human lung per unit exposure to thoron progeny, the dose conversion factor (DCF), was calculated. Dependence of the DCF on various environmental and subject-related parameters was investigated. The model used in these calculations was based on ICRP 66 recommendations. In the second part, the human lungs were considered as the source of beta and gamma radiation which target the other organs of the human body. The DCF to other organs was obtained as 20 µSv WLM(-1), which is larger than the DCF for radon progeny, which was 13 µS

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas and considered as a serious carcinogen to humans. Continuous radioactive decay of this gas emits high-energy alpha particles. Long-term radon exposure induces oxidative stress and inflammatory response, which results in chronic lung diseases. However, biological effects after radon exposure in other organs have been rarely reported. As the outermost organ of the human body, the skin suffers from environmental damage to agents such as air pollution. Epidemiological studies indicated that areas with high level of radon had a high incidence of skin c

Inhalation of 131 I is the main route for internal doses to nuclear medicine workers. This study aimed to establish a simple analysis method for determining 131 I activity in carbon cartridges, explore the activity concentration of 131 I in nuclear medicine departments, and evaluate the internal dose of workers. A total of 21 nuclear medicine departments in the hospital conducted air sampling using a high-volume air sampler equipped with carbon cartridges and glass fiber filters to collect gaseous 131 I and aerosol 131 I, respectively. Furthermore, a mathematical model was developed to analyze

In this study, the effect of temperature, water quality, and the impact of an intense typhoon event on change in 137Cs concentration in the water of agricultural and forested rivers near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant (Japan) was evaluated using monthly stationary observations obtained under baseflow conditions 2.8-10.6 years after the nuclear accident in 2011. The dissolved 137Cs concentration fluctuated seasonally with water temperature in all rivers, and the increase in dissolved 137Cs concentration for unit increase in temperature was higher in forested rivers than in agricultur

The current study analyzed and interpreted airborne radiometric data from Ilesha's basement complex rock and its surroundings. At the surface, the concentrations of the most frequent primordial radionuclides notably K, elemental concentration of uranium eU, and elemental concentration of thorium eTh were measured. The weighted mean elemental and activity concentrations were 0.85%, 2.75 ppm, 10.22 ppm, and 267.54 Bq kg-1, 34.41 Bq kg-1, 41.51 Bq kg-1 for 40 K, 238U, and 232Th, respectively. The low concentration of 40 K was certainly due to the effects of weathering, kaolinization of granites,

In order to assess how environmental factors are affecting the distribution and migration of radioiodine and plutonium that were emitted from the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident, we quantified iodine and (239,240)Pu concentration changes in soil samples with different land uses (urban, paddy, deciduous forest and coniferous forest), as well as iodine speciation in surface water and rainwater. Sampling locations were 53-63 km northwest of the FDNPP within a 75-km radius, in close proximity of each other. A ranking of the land uses by their surface soil (<4 cm) stable (12

Chlorinated solvents are one of the most commonly detected groundwater contaminants in industrial areas. Identification of polluters and allocation of contaminant sources are important concerns in the evaluation of complex subsurface contamination with multiple sources. In recent years, compound-specific isotope analyses (CSIA) have been employed to discriminate among different contaminant sources and to better understand the fate of contaminants in field-site studies. In this study, the usefulness of dual isotopes (carbon and chlorine) was shown in assessments of groundwater contamination at

Phosphogypsum (PG), primary byproduct from phosphoric acid production, is accumulated in large stockpiles and occupies vast areas of land. Phosphogypsum is a technologically enhanced naturally occurring radioactive material (TE-NORM) that contains radionuclides from (238)U and (232)Th decay series which are of most radio-toxicity. The reduction in concentration of radionuclides content from PG was based on leaching of (226)Ra, (210)Pb, (238)U and (40)K using tri-butyl phosphate (TBP) and tri-octyl phosphine oxide (TOPO) in kerosene. The factors which affect the leaching process such as contact

Sixty cases of thyrotoxicosis (including hyperthyroidism, Graves' disease, and toxic goiter), an unexpectedly large number compared with general population data, were reported in a voluntary health survey that included a period of approximately 50 yr, with 801 self-defined "Downwinders" who had lived near the Hanford, Washington, nuclear facility. In another self-selected group of medical patients (n = 423) who were examined over the same time period, only 2 cases of thyrotoxicosis were identified. Evidence is presented that suggests that the effects of bias from self-selection likely did not

Fine and ultra fine particles with attached radioactive ions, often highly toxic and carcinogenic, can cause serious acute and chronic health issues. Due to environmental significance of nanoparticles associated with radioactive isotopes of natural or artificial origin and the worldwide health risk they pose, this article presents how they are transported into the troposphere. This study evaluates the public health impact of radionuclides released during radiological accidents, focusing on inhalation doses in contaminated regions from three cases: Chernobyl (1986), Fukushima (2011), and ruthen

During the decommissioning of nuclear power plants, radioactive contaminants may be released into the work environment in the form of aerosols, which can expose workers through inhalation, ingestion, and submersion pathways. During dismantlement work, aerosol concentrations may increase due to release from materials. Typical engineering controls to reduce concentrations include air exchange as well as air filtration, which captures aerosols at their source. This work presents a model of radioactive aerosol concentration to estimate the reduction of (a) effluent aerosol concentration into the e

In the 30 years since the Chornobyl nuclear power plant disaster, there is evidence of persistent levels of incorporated ionizing radiation in adults, children and pregnant women in the surrounding area. Measured levels of Cesium-137 vary by region, and may be influenced by dietary and water sources as well as proximity to nuclear power plants. Since 2000, comprehensive, population-based birth defects monitoring has been performed in selected regions of Ukraine to evaluate trends and to generate hypotheses regarding potential causes of unexplained variations in defect rates. Significantly high
