Recurrent radiation recall dermatitis 40 years after radiation therapy for breast cancer.

Radiation recall dermatitis is an inflammatory reaction of the skin, which occurs at previously irradiated areas, usually following a subsequent exposure to an aggravating factor. Recall dermatitis can occur weeks to months after radiation, and the longest duration between radiation and dermatitis has been reported to be about 25 years. Here, we report a case of recurrent radiation recall dermatitis that developed spontaneously after 40 years following radiation for breast cancer. This case suggests that radiation recall dermatitis can occur much later than previously reported. In spite of thi

Use of trolamine to prevent and treat acute radiation dermatitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: to evaluate the effects of trolamine in the prevention or treatment of radiation dermatitis. METHOD: systematic review and meta-analysis. Detailed individual search strategies for Cinahl, Cochrane Library Central, LILACS, PubMed, and Web of Science were developed in January 2016. A manual search was also performed to find additional references. A grey literature search was executed by using Google Scholar. Two researchers independently read the titles and abstracts from every cross-reference. The risk of bias of the included studies was analyzed by the Cochrane Collaboration Risk o

Skin changes.

The response of skin to irradiation is highly complex and is dependent on many radiation-related, patient-related, and treatment-related factors. No standardized treatment of skin reactions related to radiation exists at this time. Ongoing research studying acute and late skin effects works to minimize reactions and improve patient quality-of-life. However, research with strong methodology is needed to determine if any management strategy is superior.

Recognizing cisplatin as a potential radiation recall trigger: case report and focused systematic review.

We present a case of mild radiation recall dermatitis triggered by cisplatin chemotherapy given simultaneously to re-irradiation. The dermatitis area correlated to skin exposure of the previous radiation therapy, characterizing the reaction clearly as a recall. Cisplatin has not yet been recognized as a potential trigger for recall reactions. Although it was part of several reported multidrug trigger combinations, all review works referred to cisplatin as not suspicious, suggesting the combination partner as the effector. We performed a focused systematic literature review aiming to re-evaluat

The Effectiveness of a Novel Skin Barrier Protectant in the Management of Acute Radiation Dermatitis: A Case Series.

OBJECTIVE: Acute radiation dermatitis (ARD) is a frequent adverse effect in patients with cancer undergoing radiotherapy (RT). The aim of this case series is to evaluate the effect of a novel skin barrier protectant in patients with ARD. METHODS: The skin barrier protectant was used in four patients with different cancer types undergoing RT at two clinical sites. All patients received the standard institutional skincare alongside the novel skin barrier protectant. The skin reactions were evaluated by an RT nurse using the modified version of the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group criteria. RES

Fluoroscopy-associated radiation dermatitis.

We present a 67-year-old man with an ulcerated, indurated plaque on the right mid back with a presumed diagnosis of morphea that was complicated by an allergic contact dermatitis. Further clinical and histopathologic data elucidated the diagnosis of fluoroscopy-induced radiation dermatitis. We present a brief review of the common locations, clinical characteristics, pathophysiology, and management options for fluoroscopy-induced radiation dermatitis.

Radiation dermatitis: implicated factors, clinical aspects, possible prevention, and medical care.

The increasing incidence of cancer is due to many factors. Among them quite significant is considered the rising proportion of older people in the population and the modern methods of early diagnosis. Radiotherapy (RT), along with surgery and chemotherapy, is a major therapeutic modality in the management of cancer. In the context of current treatment methods and practice, approximately half of the patients with cancer will receive RT at some stage of their illness. RT can lead to cure some kinds of cancer but it can also be delivered for palliation. Unfortunately, skin damage is a complicatio

Retrospective evaluation of concomitant cetuximab and radiotherapy tolerance for locoregional advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma treatment in patients unfit for platinum-based chemotherapy.

Radiotherapy associated with cetuximab (Cet-RT) is an alternative treatment to platinum-based chemoradiotherapy in locally advanced head and … without delay for 43 patients. Grade 3-4 acute toxicity was described in 44.3%: mucositis (n = 20), radiodermatitis (n = 25) folliculitis (n = 10), and anaphylaxis (n = 6). Fourteen patients died during treatment. Median PFS and OS were 6.3 and 18.7 months, respectively. We confirm that Cet-RT tolerance in unfit patients is poorer than that in trials. Survival da …

Unusual acute and delayed skin reactions during and after whole-brain radiotherapy in combination with the BRAF inhibitor vemurafenib. Two case reports.

BACKGROUND: Besides radiotherapy (RT) and surgery, the introduction of BRAF inhibitors like vemurafenib has provided new opportunities for t … al metastases arising from malignant melanomas. RESULTS: One case report describes excessive acute radiodermatitis which arose during whole-brain irradiation in combination with vemurafenib. The second describes a late skin reaction occurring approximately 30 days after completion of RT. CONCLUSION: These two case reports show that combination of both treatment …
