Endogenous opioids have previously been implicated in the pathophysiology of spinal cord injury, but the specific opioid(s) involved has not been determined. Here we report that dynorphin administered intrathecally causes dose-related, partially reversible, hindlimb paralysis in the unanesthetized rat. Other opioids, including mu-selective and delta-selective synthetic enkephalins or beta-endorphin, failed to induce motor dysfunction. These findings suggest that dynorphin or dynorphin-related peptides may play a role in spinal cord injury.

689 long-term electroencephalographic recordings from 88 rats with chronically implanted electrodes were evaluated with reference to the onset and development of rhythmic spike episodes of 8-9 Hz frequency characteristic of quiet wakefulness. Wistar rats were inoculated subcutaneously with either type 1 (HSV1) or type 2 (HSV2) Herpes simplex virus at 5 days of age. Animals were killed in extremis or at the end of the 14-day observation period postinoculation. Acute destructive meningoencephalitis with hemorrhage and leukocytic infiltration was observed in both groups. Polycaryocytes comprised of cells of the internal granular layer of the cerebellum were observed in some animals inoculated with HSV1. These multinucleated cells appeared to be formed by fusion of virus-infected cells, and intranuclear inclusion bodies were observed.

Severe hypothermia and an ascending impairment of shivering are previously undescribed clinical signs in hyperacute experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) in the Lewis rat. The prostates of 1775 (614 control and 1161 experimental) 2-year-old F344 rats from 12 different carcinogen bioassays conducted by the Bioassay Program of the NCI and the NTP were evaluated histologically. The incidence of prostatic lesions including (atypical) hyperplastic foci, adenomas, and carcinomas was 6.8%. Rat Kidney is reported to contain the rK7-kallikrein gene expressed at a high mRNA level. However, there is no direct evidence that the rK7 enzyme is present in kidney or urine. We have recently found that bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) at minute doses inhibits the secretion of gastric acid and pepsin in rats. Antitoxinum viperinum was tested for its ability to prevent alteration of the myocardium induced by Vipera ammodytes ammodytes venom. Antivenom was injected intraperitoneally either immediately, 30 min or 2 hr after the intraperitoneal injection of venom. The light microscopic examination showed that the antiserum neutralized the effects of venom and antivenom might be useful in treating V.a. ammodytes venom poisoning.

Six-week-old Sprague-Dawley female rats each infected with 40 Hymenolepis diminuta cysts showed increased mastocytosis from day 30 post-infection (p.i.) to day 47 p.i. Rats treated on day 40 p.i. with anthelmintic and autopsied 22 days later showed reduced mucosal mast cell (MMC) counts. Other infected rats, treated with anthelmintic on day 40, challenged with a 10 cysticercoid infection on day 47 and subsequently autopsied between day 8 and 19 post-challenge, maintained a high MMC count. Age of rats in this experiment was not a factor in mastocytosis.
