The reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome (RSDS) is an excessive or exaggerated response of an extremity to injury, manifested by burning pain, vasomotor disturbances, delayed functional recovery and trophic changes. The most common precipitating event is trauma. Early initiation of treatment improves therapeutic success. We describe three patients with RSDS, and discuss the prevalence, diagnosis and treatment of this condition. Responses to electrically evoked cremasteric reflex with bulbocavernous reflex and cystometrogram were observed on 55 male adults who have complaints of micturition or sexual disorders. The contralateral stapedius reflex elicited by sinusoidal electrostimulation via cochlear implant was investigated in 12 patients. Some of the characteristics of detrusor-external sphincter dyssynergia were examined in 14 patients with traumatic upper motor neuron lesions within 44 weeks of injury. Acoustic reflex thresholds (ARTs) at 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz from 1833 ears were subjected to multiple linear regression analyses using a stepwise inclusion model to determine the effects of hearing losses in the 500- to 4000-Hz range for each of the activators. This study measured the threshold of the acoustic reflex as a function of reflex-activating stimulus duration. Acoustic reflex thresholds (ARTs) were measured for tonal stimuli at frequencies of 1000 and 3000 Hz and broadband noise at six durations between 20 and 500 msec for both normal and hearing-impaired subjects. Over a 2-month period, 1,516 optometric patients were evaluated by a collaborative study group of 30 staff doctors in Veterans Administration Medical Centers and Outpatient Clinics. The purpose of the evaluation was to determine the status of foveal light reflexes in the population, and thereby to establish normative data for this clinical phenomenon. The fatigue of the stapedius reflex was studied in 100 normal ears. Stimulus frequencies 500 and 1000 Hz were used,and the decrement of the stapedius reflex at 5, 10, and 15 dB above the reflex threshold was estimated.
