Flow in the anterior chamber of the eye with an implanted iris-fixated artificial lens.

Flow in the aqueous humour that fills the anterior chamber of the eye occurs in response to the production and drainage of the aqueous humour, and also due to buoyancy effects produced by thermal gradients. Phakic intraocular lenses are manufactured lenses that are surgically inserted in the eyes of patients to correct refractive errors. Their presence has a dramatic effect on the circulation of the aqueous humour, resulting a very different flow in the anterior chamber, the effects of which have not been extensively investigated. In this article we use a simplified mathematical model to analy

[Transplantation of a corneal allogeneic intrastromal ring segment (CAIRS) for treatment of keratectasia].

Corneal allogeneic intrastromal ring segments (CAIRS) were recently introduced as a novel treatment modality for corneal diseases, such as keratoconus or postoperative ectasia after laser-refractive surgery. Contrary to other conventional surgical treatments for ectatic conditions, CAIRS is minimally invasive, freely adjustable in its size and length and has a short learning curve as well as a good safety profile. This article provides step-by-step instructions for the performance and integration of the CAIRS procedure into clinical practice.

Polypseudophakia: from "Piggyback" to supplementary sulcus-fixated IOLs.

Polypseudophakia, the concept of using a second intraocular lens (IOL) to supplement an IOL that has already been placed in the capsular bag, was first used as a corrective measure where the power requirement was higher than that of available single IOLs. Subsequently, the technique was modified to compensate for post-operative residual refractive errors. In these early cases, an IOL designed for the capsular bag would be implanted in the sulcus.  Although these approaches were less than ideal, alternative means of correcting residual refractive errors were not without their limitations: IOL e

Pterygium: an update on pathophysiology, clinical features, and management.

Pterygium is a relatively common ocular surface disease. The clinical aspects and the treatment options have been studied since many years ago, but many uncertainties still exist. The core pathologic pathway and the role of heredity in the development of pterygium are still attractive fields for the researchers. The role of pterygium in corneal irregularities, in addition to the refractive properties of pterygium removal, has been increasingly recognized through numerous studies. The association between pterygium and ocular surface neoplasia is challenging the traditional beliefs regarding the

Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Clinical Outcomes of Penetrating Keratoplasty Versus Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty for Keratoconus.

OBJECTIVES: In recent years, there have been rapid advances in the field of keratoconus. Penetrating keratoplasty and deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty are the standard surgical procedures. Nevertheless, controversy remains regarding the outcomes of both procedures in the treatment of keratoconus. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis comparing postoperative outcome measures of penetrating keratoplasty versus deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty for keratoconus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews for eligible s

Ocular Features and Clinical Approach to Cataract and Corneal Refractive Surgery in Patients with Myotonic Dystrophy.

Myotonic dystrophy is the most common inherited muscular dystrophy in adults and presents as two forms, type 1, and type 2. Ocular manifestations such as premature cataract formation, may be the first diagnostic sign or symptom of the disease, offering ophthalmologists a unique diagnostic role. Fuchs' endothelial corneal dystrophy, ptosis and ocular melanoma are other possible findings. Systemic features can help providers better understand the disease and any accommodations to be made in clinical or surgical settings. Some patients with this disease may request evaluation of certain cataract

What intrinsic factors affect the central corneal thickness?

The cornea is one of the tissues responsible for covering and protecting the inner structures of the eye. Central corneal thickness (CCT) is defined as the distance between the anterior epithelial surface and the posterior surface of the endothelial layer. This parameter plays a very important role regarding intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement, evaluation of corneal uniformity, selection of a suitable technique for corneal refractive surgery and the planning of surgical procedures to overcome corneal disease. This comprehensive review elucidates the multifaceted factors influencing the cent

Hydrogel intracorneal lenses in aphakic eyes.

BACKGROUND: The theoretical benefits of synthetic keratophakia over conventional corneal lamellar procedures are the elimination of donor concerns and superior refractive predictability. Additionally, synthetic material can be inspected for optical quality and power, and it can be sterilized. Furthermore, visual recovery should be more rapid since epithelium is not removed from the central part of the cornea and the need for keratocyte repopulation is eliminated. OBJECTIVE: To present results on patients who received an intracorneal implant (Kerato-Gel, Allergan Medical Optics, Irvine, Calif)

Artificial intelligence-based nomogram for small-incision lenticule extraction.

BACKGROUND: Small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) is a surgical procedure for the refractive correction of myopia and astigmatism, which has been reported as safe and effective. However, over- and under-correction still occur after SMILE. The necessity of nomograms is emphasized to achieve optimal refractive results. Ophthalmologists diagnose nomograms by analyzing the preoperative refractive data with their individual knowledge which they accumulate over years of experience. Our aim was to predict the nomograms of sphere, cylinder, and astigmatism axis for SMILE accurately by applying m

Enhanced Ablation of Cornea Doped with a Fluorescein Dye Using a Visible Wavelength Laser.

Myopia (nearsightedness) and presbyopia (aging eye) are the most common refractive errors of the human eye. Technology has advanced toward correcting aberration using various surgical procedures, including laser surgery, as well as prescribing corrective lenses. Hence, the effect of various laser wavelengths on the eye has been extensively studied over the last few decades. Usually, excimer lasers are used for this purpose, which increases the cost of the procedure because they are unique and difficult to manufacture and require regular maintenance. Due to the absorption properties, visible wa
