Sexual matters among teenagers.

In the complex developmental period of puberty, adolescents experience biophysical changes and adapt to societal and cultural expectations of adulthood. Development of their sexuality is an important biopsychosocial change during this period that, when neglected, may result in unmet sexual and reproductive health needs. Patterns of behaviour in adolescence have repercussions across the lifespan. HEADSSS (home, education/employment/eating, activities, drugs, sexuality, sleep, suicide/depression and safety) is a systematic clinical screening tool for use with adolescents. Adolescents may view ri

Prescribing isotretinoin for transgender youth: A pledge for more inclusive care.

As the transgender community has become increasingly visible in public life, a greater awareness of this group's unique health needs and obstacles to optimal medical care has developed. Unfortunately, transgender youth face multiple barriers within the health care system, including access to equitable and gender-affirming care. As dermatologists who care for children and adolescents, we must be aware of the challenges facing transgender youth and work to correct the disparities that exist for this vulnerable group. An initial step in supporting our transgender patients is to advocate for chang

The Current Status of Research on the Integration of Sexual and Reproductive Health and HIV Services.

Integration of services for sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and HIV has been widely promoted globally in the belief that both clients and health providers benefit through improvements in quality, efficient use of resources, and lower costs, helping to maximize limited health resources and provide comprehensive client-centered care. This article builds on the growing body of research on integrated sexual SRH and HIV services. It brings together critical reviews on issues within the wider SRH and rights agenda and synthesizes recent research on integrated services, drawing on the Integra In

Obstetric fistula: the challenge to human rights.

Obstetric fistula can be explained to result from different causes. These holes in the tissue wall between the vagina and bladder and/or rectum are most prevalent in resource-poor countries, attributable to prolonged obstructed labour and absent or inaccessible remedial prenatal services. Obstructed labour is often due to small pelvic size, resulting from women's youth and premature childbearing and/or malnutrition. Poverty at national health-service and family levels often predisposes pregnant populations to suffer high rates of fistula. Global estimates showing up to 100,000 new cases each y

Remodeling of Uterine Tissues During Gestation of Potamotrygon wallacei (Elasmobranchii), a Neotropical Freshwater Stingray Endemic to the Negro River, Central Amazonia.

Neotropical freshwater stingrays of the subfamily Potamotrygoninae exhibit aplacental viviparity with uterine trophonemata. In this reproductive mode, females nourish and provide oxygenation to the embryo via the mucosa of the uterine wall. The aim of this study was to describe and histologically quantify the tissue components of the gravid uterus in an Amazonian freshwater stingray. Adult females of Potamotrygon wallacei were studied in different reproductive periods: resting stage, pregnant, and postpartum. During reproductive rest, the left ovary has numerous follicles compared to the right

Downplaying reality: is the UN population fund forgetting population growth and family planning?

BACKGROUND: The global population is projected by the UN Population Division to continue growing by over 2 billion, from 8.1 in 2024 to 10.3 in 2084, aggravating climate change and biodiversity loss, raising risks of poverty and starvation, and impairing reproductive health in many developing countries, especially in Africa. OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of the population policy of a major international actor in reproductive health, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and presentation of alternative and complementary policy addressing population growth, high fertility rates and unmet need for

What post-abortion care indicators don't measure: Global abortion politics and obstetric practice in Senegal.

Since the early 1990s, post-abortion care (PAC) has been advocated as a harm reduction approach to maternal mortality and morbidity in count … in which safe abortion has been omitted from maternal and reproductive health care associated with reproductive rights. Ethnographic attention to daily obstetric practices challenges globally circulating narratives about PAC as an apolitical intervention, revealing not only how anxieties about abortion ironically suppress the very rates of MVA utilization that purpo …

Women's decision making for postpartum sterilization: does the Medicaid waiting period add value?

OBJECTIVES: Currently, patients with federally funded insurance are required to sign a sterilization consent form (SCF) at least 30 days prior to sterilization, while privately insured patients are not. Although this policy was designed to protect the reproductive rights of vulnerable populations, it has had the unintended effect of creating a disparity in access to an effective contraceptive method. Our qualitative study aims to clarify the decision-making process surrounding postpartum sterilization and assess if patients perceive that the SCF adds value. STUDY DESIGN: We interviewed 25 wom…

Social opportunity rapidly regulates expression of CRF and CRF receptors in the brain during social ascent of a teleost fish, Astatotilapia burtoni.

In social animals, hierarchical rank governs food availability, territorial rights and breeding access. Rank order can change rapidly and typically depends on dynamic aggressive interactions. Since the neuromodulator corticotrophin releasing factor (CRF) integrates internal and external cues to regulate the hypothalamic-pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis, we analyzed the CRF system during social encounters related to status. We used a particularly suitable animal model, African cichlid fish, Astatotilapia burtoni, whose social status regulates reproduction. When presented with an opportunity to rise

Reproductive futures within a context of uterus transplants in India.

Reproduction is considered a core event in a cisgender heterosexual woman's life. Several hierarchies exist within the field of reproduction, with reproduction being privileged among people from dominant races, classes, castes, ages, and abilities. In this paper, I explore uterine transplantion as an emerging mode of reproduction, which privileges the experience of pregnancy in addition to genetic relatedness, specifically within the Indian context. The focus is on the socio-cultural and economic discourses surrounding the marketisation of reproductive technologies and how these recalibrate so

If, when and how to tell: a qualitative study of HIV disclosure among young women in Zimbabwe.

In the Shona culture of Zimbabwe, a high regard for childbearing contributes to strong pressures on women to have children. For young women living with HIV, consequently, disclosure of HIV status can be a central strategy to garner support for controlling fertility. This paper reports findings from qualitative interviews with 28 young women aged 16-20 living with HIV in urban Zimbabwe and discusses how these findings can contribute to better policies and programs for this population. Regardless of their current relationship status, interview participants described disclosure as a turning point

Prevalence and disparities in sexual and reproductive health of women of reproductive age (20-49 years) in China: A national cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Ensuring women's sexual and reproductive health (SRH) is a fundamental human right and key to 2030 agenda of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), yet limited evidence exists on SRH in China, including national estimates and disparities of women's SRH experiences, gynaecological diseases, and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). METHODS: A national cross-sectional survey based on a multistage stratified sampling from 15 provinces of China was performed from May 2019 to April 2021. A total of 12 815 reproductive-aged (20-49 years) women were involved. The SRH experiences (i

Prevalence of married women's decision-making autonomy on contraceptive use and its associated factors in high fertility regions of Ethiopia: a multilevel analysis using EDHS 2016 data.

BACKGROUND: Women's independence in reproductive health is crucial to the health of mothers and children. Couples are, however, restricted from discussing their relationship openly. Regarding this, information about women's decision-making autonomy is low in developing countries including Ethiopia. Therefore, this study was aimed to assess married women's decision-making autonomy on contraceptive use in high fertility regions of Ethiopia. METHODS: The study was based on secondary data analysis of the Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey 2016 data. A total weighted sample of 1157 reproducti
