Respiration restitution in rats following its termination in immersion hypothermia.

Rats were cooled in water until attaining profound hypothermia and respiratory arrest. After removal from water, 0.5% solution of Na2EDTA was administered intravenously. This led to a drop of blood [Ca2+] by 20-30% from the baseline and promoted recovery of respiration following its arrest lasting 10.3±1.4 min. By the 30th minute of Na2EDTA administration, respiration rate increased to 32.3±5.2 cycles per minute and respiration amplitude reached 68±4% of the baseline level. This effect was observed without special warming of the rats. It was concluded that the period during which the organism …

Physiological adaptation of Desulfitobacterium hafniense strain TCE1 to tetrachloroethene respiration.

Desulfitobacterium spp. are ubiquitous organisms with a broad metabolic versatility, and some isolates have the ability to use tetrachloroethene (PCE) as terminal electron acceptor. In order to identify proteins involved in this organohalide respiration process, a comparative proteomic analysis was performed. Soluble and membrane-associated proteins obtained from cells of Desulfitobacterium hafniense strain TCE1 that were growing on different combinations of the electron donors lactate and hydrogen and the electron acceptors PCE and fumarate were analyzed. Among proteins increasingly expressed…

D-Erythroascorbic acid activates cyanide-resistant respiration in Candida albicans.

Higher plants, protists and fungi possess cyanide-resistant respiratory pathway, which is mediated by alternative oxidase (AOX). The activit … en together, our results suggest that EASC plays important roles in activation of cyanide-resistant respiration in C. albicans.

[Obstructive respiration disorders during sleep and disorders of cardiac rhythm].

AIM: To investigate the impact of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) on circadian profile of cardiac arrhythmia in patients with ischemic heart disease (IHD) and to determine clinical markers of OSA. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 52 patients (31 males, 21 females, body mass index 30.5 +/- 5.8 kg/m2) with IHD admitted to hospital for ventricular extrasystole and paroxysmal cardiac fibrillation filled in questionnaires, were examined anthropometrically, with nocturnal cardiorespiration and holter monitoring. Cluster and correlation-regression mathematical analyses of the findings were made. RESULTS: OSA w…

[Pulmonary gas exchange under room air respiration in hypercapneic patients].

INTRODUCTION: The alveolar-capillary oxygen difference, P(A-a)O2, is important in the study of gas exchange disorders, however does not give us reliable results when applied to hypercapneic patients. On the other hand the venous admixture calculation, seems to be able to diagnose alveolar-capillary gas exchange difficulty of any kind. OBJECTIVE: Checking the reliability of the alveolar-capillary oxygen difference to diagnose the alveolar-capillary disorder in face of alveolar hypoventilation, by using the venous admixture calculation as standard. METHODS: 83 blood gas analysis from patients

Quinone-respiration improves dechlorination of carbon tetrachloride by anaerobic sludge.

The impact of humic acids and the humic model compound, anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS), on the biodegradation of carbon tetrachloride (CT) by anaerobic granular sludge was studied. Addition of both humic acids and AQDS at sub-stoichiometric levels increased the first-order rate of conversion of CT up to 6-fold, leading to an increased production of inorganic chloride, which accounted for 40-50% of the CT initially added. Considerably less dechlorination occurred in sludge incubations lacking humic substances. By comparison, very limited dechlorination occurred in sterile controls with au

Inhibition of aerobic respiration and dissimilatory perchlorate reduction using cyanide.

The effect of low concentrations of cyanide on dissimilatory perchlorate and chlorate reduction and aerobic respiration was examined using pure cultures of Azospira sp. KJ. Cyanide at a concentration of 38 microM inhibited cell growth on perchlorate, chlorate and molecular oxygen, but it did not inhibit the activity of chlorite dismutase. When oxygen accumulation was prevented by adding an oxygen scavenger (Oxyrase or L-cysteine), however, cells completely reduced perchlorate in the presence of cyanide. It was concluded that the inhibition of dissimilative perchlorate reduction by cyanide at t…

Cerebral haemodynamics in obstructive sleep apnoea and Cheyne-Stokes respiration.

Obstructive sleep apnoeas are common among stroke patients and, as different from central apnoeas, they do not decline during stroke rehabil … ascular effects including stroke. This may not be the case during central apnoeas, as Cheyne-Stokes respiration with central apnoeas is a result of an underlying disorder such as heart failure and stroke and is not a disease entity in itself. It is suggested that obstructive sleep apnoea is a risk factor for stroke as it is common among stroke victims and cer …

Hemodynamics, cerebral circulation, and oxygen saturation in Cheyne-Stokes respiration.

Because cardiovascular disorders and stroke may induce Cheyne-Stokes respiration, our purpose was to study the interaction among cerebral activity, cerebral circulation, blood pressure, and blood gases during Cheyne-Stokes respiration. Ten patients with heart failure or a previous stroke were investigated during Cheyne-Stokes respiration with recordings of daytime polysomnography, cerebral blood flow velocity, intra-arterial blood pressure, and intra-arterial oxygen saturation with and without oxygen administration. There were simultaneous changes in wakefulness, cerebral blood flow velocity, …

Self-reported excessive daytime somnolence and impaired respiration in sleep.

The purpose of this study was to determine which measures of impaired respiration in sleep relate to self-reported excessive daytime somnolence (EDS). Previous studies conflict regarding the relative importance of arterial hypoxemia and brief awakenings in relating to EDS. A group of 37 elderly clinic patients with complaints of snoring, a clinical diagnosis of sleep apnea, and varying degrees of self-reported somnolence were evaluated polysomnographically and psychometrically. Results showed that a subgroup of somnolent patients were characterized by more severe oxygen desaturations relative …

Mitochondrial respiration modulates Hsf1 activation and the heat shock response.

Cells employ a bevy of transcriptional and post-translational stress responses to tolerate the burden of misfolded proteins induced by stres … employ yeast models that are easily manipulated to generate energy via glycolysis or mitochondrial respiration by changing the carbon source in the media. Using this model, we demonstrate that Hsf1 activity, the heat shock response and proteostasis are impaired in respiring cells. Interestingly, our data show that reduced Hsf1 activity regulates viability of …

HydSL hydrogenase of Thiocapsa bogorovii may participate in sulfur respiration.

According to the modern classification of NiFe hydrogenases, the HydSL hydrogenase of Thiocapsa bogorovii is assigned to subgroup 1e, the so-called isp-type hydrogenases. This subgroup is proposed to unite hydrogenases involved in sulfur respiration; however, direct experimental evidence supporting this function remains limited. In this study, we isolated a protein complex containing the HydSL hydrogenase from T. bogorovii that exhibits high activity in the H₂ + S0 → H₂S reaction. Under native electrophoresis, the complex migrated as a single band, whereas SDS-PAGE resolved it into seven bands…

Cortical motor activity modulates respiration and reduces apnoea in neonates.

Respiration is governed by a widespread network of cortical and subcortical structures. This complex communication between the brain and lungs is altered in pathological conditions. Apnoea - the cessation of respiration - is a common condition in infants, particularly those born prematurely. Apnoea in infants is believed to relate to immaturity of brainstem respiratory centres; involvement of the cortex in respiration in infants has yet to be explored. We investigated if there was any evidence for cortical coupling with respiration in newborn humans and whether it relates to apnoea. Using simu…
