Cholinergic receptor subtypes and REM sleep in animals and normal controls.

As reviewed here and elsewhere in this symposium, acetylcholine, in conjunction with other neurotransmitter systems, plays a very important role in the regulation of circadian and sleep-wake states. To briefly recapitulate, several current basic concepts about the regulation of sleep-wake states include: (a) REM sleep, or at least its phasic events (eye movements and PGO spikes), are promoted by cholinergic neurons originating within the peribrachial regions [LDT/PPT] (Mitani et al., 1988; Shiromani et al., 1988; Datta et al., 1991; Shouse and Siegel, 1992); (b) REM sleep may be inhibited by n

Distribution of choline acetyltransferase immunoreactive somata in the feline brainstem: implications for REM sleep generation.

In the present study we examined the distribution of cholinergic and catecholaminergic neurons, in the feline brainstem, as defined by choli … s a result of an interaction between these transmitters in this area rather than the medial pontine reticular formation where no cholinergic or catecholamine neurons were found. Cholinergic neurons were also found in the cranial nerve nuclei and the nucleus ambiguus. The presence of cholinergic neurons in the PPG and LDT suggest that these neurons may play an importa …

Neural mediation of conditioned food aversions.

The above discussion is only a brief review of what is known about the neural mediation of conditioned food aversions. Although several other approaches were not mentioned (e.g. biochemical studies), one can still appreciate the value of the aversion paradigm for providing important information about neural mechanisms in learning and memory. A theoretical approach that may be valuable in understanding brain function in conditioned food aversion data is Hughlings Jackson's hierarchical notions of nervous organization. Hedonic responses to food stimuli appear to be brainstem reflexes. On top of

Central distribution of afferent and efferent components of the glossopharyngeal nerve: an HRP study in the cat.

Central distribution of efferent and afferent components of the glossopharyngeal (IX) nerve in the cat was studied by applying horseradish peroxidase (HRP) to the lesser petrosal nerve (LPN), carotid sinus nerve (CSN) or cervical trunk (CT) distal to the branching point of the CSN. After applying HRP to the LPN or CT, HRP-labeled neurons were distributed ipsilaterally in the lateral regions of the reticular formation from the caudalmost levels of the facial nerve genu to the rostral levels of the solitary nucleus. HRP-labeled axons of these neurons ran dorsomedially and then medially along the…

[Visceral pathology in severe cranio-cerebral injuries and its pathogenetic mechanisms].

Pathological conditions of the internal organs and their innervation apparatus, including the limbic cortex, reticular formation, vegetative nuclei of the vagus nerves and spinal cord, peripheral ganglia, and intramural plexuses, in severe craniocerebral trauma were studied by the clinico-physiological, clinico-morphological, and neurohistological methods. The innervation apparatuses of the organs were also studied in experiments with a purposeful effect exerted on the hypothalamus. Peculiarities in the manifestation of visceral pathology in diencephalic and mesencephalobulbar forms of brain l…

[Biogenic amines in the brain structures of rats from genetically diverse strains under stress].

The content was studied of biogenic amines and their metabolites (by the method of high-effective fluid chromatography electrochemical detection) in the reticular formation of the midbrain, locus coeruleus and sensorimotor cortex in the rats of Wistar and August lines, differing in the behaviour in the open field, in conditions of immobilization stress. The dependence was revealed of the biogenic amines level on the animals genotype and individual characteristics. Most probably, the level of biogenic amines metabolism in central brain structures determines the stability of the animals against …

["One and a half syndrome" caused by lateral pontine haemorrhage].

"One and a half syndrome" is an internuclear ophthalmoplegia combined with lateral gaze palsy on the same side. It is caused by ipsilateral lesion of the caudal part of pontine dorsal tegmentum - medial longitudinal fasciculus and paramedian pontine reticular formation or/and abducens nucleus. Usually it is of vascular origin and it can be a sign of lateral pontine haemorrhage. We described a patient with "one and a half syndrome" caused by spontaneous hypertensive hemorrhage in the lateral pontine legmentum which was visualised by brain CT scanning.

Induction of autoimmune colitis by Yersinia enterocolitica 60-kilodalton heat-shock protein.

BACKGROUND: Many investigations of the relationship between ulcerative colitis (UC) and heat-shock protein (Hsp) 60 have been reported. We have already established an animal model exhibiting UC-like lesions caused by administration of Escherichia coli expressing Yersinia enterocolitica Hsp60. In this study, we therefore attempted to induce mouse colitis by purified Y. enterocolitica Hsp60. METHODS: Purified Y. enterocolitica Hsp60 was injected intraperitoneally into B10A/SgSn mice at a dose of 3 microg/0.2 ml once a week for 2 months, and morphological changes in the intestine were examined b

Carotid brainstem reflex myoclonus after hypoxic brain damage.

A patient comatose after acute anoxia developed bilaterally synchronous, periodic myoclonic jerks most prominently in the bilateral upper limbs. Although the myoclonus seemed to occur spontaneously, electrophysiological studies showed that the myoclonic jerks correlated in timing and size with arterial pulses, and was suppressed by massage over the carotid sinus. It is proposed that the present myoclonus is a variant of brainstem reflex myoclonus in which arterial pulses served as intrinsic trigger stimuli via the carotid sinus and the medullary reticular formation.

Failure of automatic control of ventilation (Ondine's curse) associated with viral encephalitis of the brainstem: a clinicopathologic study of one case.

A case of Ondine's curse associated with hypothalamic dysfunction in an 8-year-old boy is described. The neuropathological examination revealed a viral encephalitis affecting the hypothalamus and the brainstem. In the medulla the inflammatory process involved the reticular formation and the nuclei considered to control automatic respiration such as the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus, the nucleus tractus solitarii and the nucleus ambiguous. Although Ondine's curse following viral infection of the central nervous system has been previously reported this represents the first case of viral ence…

[Neurologic syndromes in myocardial infarct patients during various stages of treatment].

In patients with myocardial infarctions the vegetative disorders are of a regional character and may be expressed in symptomatology, character…
