To determine the prevalence of spider angiomata in patients with cirrhosis, the factors influencing them and whether or not they are present in the retina of patients with cirrhosis, 93 cirrhotics were studied. Cutaneous spider angioma were seen in 19 (20%) patients. All patients with spiders had at least one episode of variceal bleeding and had grade III or IV oesophageal varices. A rare case is described: unilateral diffuse retinal ischemia in a 3-year-old girl with type I neurofibromatosis. Besides retinal involvement, the child developed melanocytic iridial hamartomas in the ipsilateral eye and skin disorders presenting as "milk-and-coffee" spots and freckles in the armpits. Differential diagnosis and pathogenesis of retinal ischemia in neurofibromatosis are discussed.

The retinal pigment epithelium and retinal hamartoma is a rare benign tumor. We describe a case of combined hamartoma of the pigment epithelium and retina in an eight year-old-girl with strabismus and amblyopia. The fluoresceinic angiography and the echography allowed to exclude a malignant tumor of the retina or the choroid. The clinical follow-up confirmed that the lesion was stationary. History, pathogeny, differential diagnostics and treatment are discussed.

PURPOSE: The authors report one patient with definitive and one patient with presumed metastatic cutaneous malignant melanoma to the vitreous and retina diagnosed by cytologic evaluation of the vitreous and subretinal fluid.

Within a group of neuro-ophthalmic patients (147 patients with either florid or cured optic neuritis (ON), five (3.4%) were found to be suffering from retinal periphlebitis "Rucker". Twenty-nine Finnish patients (8-80 years old during follow-up) with hyperornithinemia and gyrate atrophy (HOGA) were followed 2 to 31 years to determine when and how rapidly visual acuities and visual functions were affected by the disease.
