Mucormycosis is an invasive fungal infection with high mortality rate in immunocompromised individuals. Due to COVID-19 pandemic, the disease has resurfaced recently and lack of appropriate antifungals resulted in a poor outcome in patients. The typical features of a fulminating rhinocerebral infection by the fungus Rhizopus in a patient with diabetic ketoacidosis are described. The clinical presentation was characterized by an infection of the face, followed by rapid bilateral visual loss and massive cerebral infarction due to extensive vascular involvement. Early diagnosis is a prerequisite for successful treatment, which consists of control of the underlying disease, surgical debridement and systemic antifungal therapy.

Cutaneous infections due to fungi of the order Mucorales are uncommon and usually present as a fulminant necrotizing cellulitis. We describe a case of a progressive wound infection at a surgical drain site caused by Rhizopus rhizopodoformis. The indolent nature of the infection and lack of systemic toxicity were atypical features. Mucormycosis should be suspected in cases of slowly progressive cellulitis in the appropriate clinical setting.

An 18-year-old woman (a former intravenous drug abuser) sustained open tibial plateau and shaft fractures, followed by cellulitis and a wound infection caused by a Rhizopus species, which is a fungus of the class Mucorales. The patient responded to surgical debridement and a prolonged course of amphotericin B. No lymphocyte abnormality or other host immune defect could be demonstrated in this patient.

We report an outbreak of cutaneous Rhizopus oryzae infection associated with adhesive polyethylene tapes used to stabilize peripheral venous catheters in four patients. All patients were suffering from haematological diseases; the infection severity was proportional to the duration of neutropenia. Intervention with systemic antifungal treatment and surgical debridement was required for resolution of the infection. The entire batch of tapes was withdrawn and the outbreak subsided.

This study investigated the effects of adding Saccharomycopsis fibuligera (SF) and Pichia kudriavzevii (PK) on microbial communities and flavor substances in industrial xiaoqu light-flavor baijiu production. A case of zygomycosis caused by Rhizopus oryzae in a diabetic patient previously misdiagnosed as invasive pulmonary aspergillosis and an overview of the disease in India are presented. Anterior tamponade with Surgicel (oxidized cellulose) was performed on a 5-year-old girl with megakaryoblastic leukemia (M7 AML) and epistaxis. Several days later necrosis of the nasal ala occurred. Debridement was performed and mucormycosis caused by Rhizopus was found in the material. Having cured mucormycosis, a defect of the complete nasal ala remained. The question of a surgical resolution of the disfiguring nasal defect arises.

A neonate of 29 weeks' gestation who received probiotics developed clinical signs suggesting surgical necrotizing enterocolitis. A specimen of resected ileum revealed fungal forms within the bowel wall. Rhizopus oryzae was detected via DNA sequencing from probiotic powder and tissue specimens from the infant. To our knowledge, this is the first report linking gastrointestinal zygomycosis to the administration of contaminated probiotics.

Invasive rhino-sinusitis infection has been known to be caused by zygomycetes commonly belonging to the genera Rhizopus, Mucor and Rhizomucor. We report a middle aged diabetic gentleman who had invasive rhino-orbital-cerebral infection with Syncephalastrum racemosum. This genera belonging to zygomycetes group of fungi which usually causes skin and soft tissue infection but invasive infection with this fungus is rarely known.

This paper describes a 71-year-old man with myelodysplasia who required multiple transfusions and subsequent deferoxamine chelation therapy and who then developed indolent cutaneous and probable pulmonary infection with Rhizopus species. The patient did not have rapidly progressive infection as has been described in almost all previously reported deferoxamine-treated patients with zygomycosis. Amphotericin B therapy was successful in curing the infection.
