Impacts of rodents in piggeries in Australia - review and pilot impact study.

Research on the impacts of rodents in Australian piggeries has been limited. While rodent impacts are often assumed, the economic impacts and management costs are not well measured. Although the disease risk is relatively well-known, regular assessments are lacking. This review and pilot study aimed to assess existing knowledge on rodent impacts and conduct a small pilot study to gather information on their rodent problems, economic impacts, and challenges faced. The goal was to develop management strategies without relying on rodenticides. Piggery owners' main concerns about rodents include (

Zoonotic importance of ecto- and endoparasites in rodents in Malaysia: a review.

IMPORTANCE: Rodents, particularly those inhabiting urban areas, are sources of infections that cause major human diseases. The number of recorded zoonotic infections has increased in recent decades, exacerbating public concerns. Zoonotic diseases in humans, such as capillariasis, hymenolepiasis, and toxoplasmosis, are life-threatening in severe cases, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. A thorough understanding of pathogens, particularly the parasites infecting rodents, is critical for predicting future zoonotic disease outbreaks and developing effective mitigation strategies. This

DNA of diverse adenoviruses detected in Cameroonian rodent and shrew species.

Rodent adenoviruses are important models for human disease. In contrast to the over 70 adenovirus types isolated from humans, few rodent adenoviruses are known, despite the vast diversity of rodent species. PCR and Sanger sequencing were used to investigate adenovirus diversity in wild rodents and shrews in Cameroon. Adenovirus DNA was detected in 13.8% of animals (n = 218). All detected sequences differ from known adenovirus types by more than 10% at the amino acid level, thus indicating up to 14 novel adenovirus species. These results highlight the diversity of rodent adenoviruses, their phy

Selenium-containing compounds: a new hope for innovative treatments in Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease.

Neurodegenerative diseases are challenging to cure. To date, no cure has been found for Alzheimer's disease or Parkinson's disease, and current treatments are able only to slow the progression of the diseases and manage their symptoms. After an introduction to the complex biology of these diseases, we discuss the beneficial effect of selenium-containing agents, which show neuroprotective effects in vitro or in vivo. Indeed, selenium is an essential trace element that is being incorporated into innovative organoselenium compounds, which can improve outcomes in rodent or even primate models with

Triclabendazole sulfoxide causes stage-dependent embryolethality in zebrafish and mouse in vitro.

BACKGROUND: Fascioliasis and paragonimiasis are widespread foodborne trematode diseases, affecting millions of people in more than 75 countries. The treatment of choice for these parasitic diseases is based on triclabendazole, a benzimidazole derivative which has been suggested as a promising drug to treat pregnant women and children. However, at the moment, this drug is not approved for human use in most countries. Its potential adverse effects on embryonic development have been scarcely studied, and it has not been assigned a pregnancy category by the FDA. Thus, to help in the process of ris

Host specificity and genetic diversity of Bartonella in rodents and shrews from Eastern China.

Bartonella are vector-borne gram-negative facultative intracellular bacteria causing emerging infectious diseases worldwide, and two thirds of known Bartonella species are carried by rodents. We captured rodents, shrews and rodent ectoparasitic mites in rural areas of Qingdao City, Shandong Province, China from 2012 to 2021 and used the animal spleen tissues for the PCR amplification of Bartonella gltA and rpoB genes. PCR showed 9.4% (40/425) rodents, and 5.1% (12/235) shrews were positive for Bartonella. Seven Bartonella species including three novel species were identified in five rodent spe

Assessing the Diversity of Rodent-Borne Viruses: Exploring of High-Throughput Sequencing and Classical Amplification/Sequencing Approaches.

Rodents are distributed throughout the world and interact with humans in many ways. They provide vital ecosystem services, some species are useful models in biomedical research and some are held as pet animals. However, many rodent species can have adverse effects such as damage to crops and stored produce, and they are of health concern because of the transmission of pathogens to humans and livestock. The first rodent viruses were discovered by isolation approaches and resulted in break-through knowledge in immunology, molecular and cell biology, and cancer research. In addition to rodent-spe

Rodent-Human Interface: Behavioral Risk Factors and Leptospirosis in a Province in the Central Region of Thailand.

This sequential explanatory mixed-method study consisted of analytical, cross-sectional, and qualitative studies. The research was conducted in the Khao Nor and Khao Kaew areas of the Banphot Pisai districts of Nakhon Sawan Province in 2019. Here, we examined the rodent contact characteristics of villagers in these areas and determined the potential characteristics/risk factors associated with rodents using a semi-structured questionnaire, key informant interview (KII), and focus group discussion (FGD). Results of the quantitative study (N1 = 372) characterized participants that contacted rode

First Molecular Detection of Pathogens Leptospira in Common Rodent Captured in North Algeria Urban Areas.

Leptospirosis is an anthropozoonosis disease of worldwide distribution caused by mobile spirochetes of the genus Leptospira and rodents, mainly rats, are described as its primary reservoir. In Algeria, there is limited data about the prevalence of Leptospira spp. in humans and animals, as well as Leptospira carriage in wild rodents. The study aimed to highlight the importance of rodents as a reservoir of Leptospira bacterium in Blida city in Algeria by detecting and identifying circulating Leptospira species in the rodent population. A total of 101 rodents, 95 Rattus Norvegicus, 5 Rattus Rattu

Hymenolepiasis Caused by Hymenolepis nana in Humans and Natural Infection in Rodents in a Marginal Urban Sector of Guayaquil, Ecuador.

BACKGROUND Hymenolepiasis is a globally prevalent zoonosis of the monoxenic cycle. Humans acquire the disease through fecal-oral transmission by ingesting food or water with infective eggs from infected rodents. This report presents 3 cases of hymenolepiasis in children, due to zoonotic transmission from rodents and presumably associated with the consumption of powdered milk contaminated with infective eggs of Hymenolepis nana, and shows that awareness and early diagnosis contributed to timely treatment of the disease. CASE REPORT Three children, aged 9, 12, and 13 years, living in a marginal

Molecular Detection of Leptospira spp. in Rodents Trapped in the Mozambique Island City, Nampula Province, Mozambique.

INTRODUCTION: Leptospirosis is a neglected zoonotic disease caused by a bacteria of the genus Leptospira. In Africa it is frequently mistaken for frequently occurring conditions such as malaria. The aim of this study was to identify rodent species involved in the transmission of the disease, the prevalence of pathogenic Leptospira spp. in selected rodent species and risk factors for human leptospirosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a descriptive and exploratory epidemiological and molecular study in Mozambique Island city in 2015. Six neighborhoods, comprising 30 households each were ra

Rodents and their ectoparasites in Sharkia Governorate, Egypt.

Rodents serve as reservoir hosts for many parasitic and bacterial diseases which are spread to man and animals by their habits, their droppings or by their arthropod ectoparasites. Commensal (semi-domestic) rodents were collected by different methods from Sharkia Governorate over a period of one year, 1989. The trapped rodents in descending order of prevalence were Rattus norvegicus, Rattus rattus, Mus musculus and Gerbillus gerbillus. The ectoparasites were collected and identified as five species of fleas, one species of lice and one species of mites. The role of these rodents as animal rese

Quantifying the seasonal drivers of transmission for Lassa fever in Nigeria.

Lassa fever (LF) is a zoonotic disease that is widespread in West Africa and involves animal-to-human and human-to-human transmission. Animal-to-human transmission occurs upon exposure to rodent excreta and secretions, i.e. urine and saliva, and human-to-human transmission occurs via the bodily fluids of an infected person. To elucidate the seasonal drivers of LF epidemics, we employed a mathematical model to analyse the datasets of human infection, rodent population dynamics and climatological variations and capture the underlying transmission dynamics. The surveillance-based incidence data o
