Melatonin: the dark force.

Although the pineal gland was described 2,300 years ago, its functions remained obscure and productive research was limited until 1958, when Lerner and associates defined melatonin. In 1965 Wurtman and Axelrod advanced the "melatonin hypothesis," according to which the pineal gland acts as a transducer responding to changes in circumambient light by changing its rates of melatonin output. Sites and mechanisms of melatonin action are still poorly understood. Two consistent effects are the induction of sleep and an antigonadotropic influence on reproductive structure and behavior. The former is

Fibre utilization by Kalahari dwelling subterranean Damara mole-rats (Cryptomys damarensis) when fed their natural diet of gemsbok cucumber tubers (Acanthosicyos naudinianus).

Kalahari dwelling Damara mole-rats (Cryptomys damarensis) naturally feed on a high fibre diet of underground gemsbok cucumber tubers, Acanthosicyos naudinianus. We investigated the degree of fibre utilization and fermentation on this diet by measuring caecal characteristics (namely temperature, pH and weight) and in vitro rates of gas and short chain fatty acid (SCFA) production in these underground dwelling hind-gut fermentors. Rectal temperatures (33.8 +/- 0.6 degrees C) were consistently higher than caecal temperatures (33.3 +/- 0.6 degrees C). Furthermore, a 0.8 degrees C gradient of tempe

Molecular detection and phylogeny of Hepatozoon species in a wide spectrum of hosts from northwestern China.

BACKGROUND: Hepatozoon, an apicomplexan, mainly infects amphibians, reptiles and mammals, accidentally causes anemia and icterus in human. L … les). The Hepatozoon infection rate was 2.5% (84/3344 specimens). All positives were exclusively in Rodentia (6.5%, 84/1301); no Hepatozoon DNA was found in the other six mammalian orders (Lagomorpha, Chiroptera, Artiodactyla, Perissodactyla, Carnivora, Primates) or Squamata reptiles. Combined with our previous report on Hepatozoon canis in the red fox (Vu …

Molecular detection and characterization of Leptospira species in bats and other small wild mammals from Villeta municipality, Colombia.

Leptospira is a bacterial genus which includes several pathogenic species. Wild mammals can act as reservoir hosts, shedding bacteria in their urine. Leptospirosis is an important health problem in Villeta, but data regarding potential reservoirs hosts and natural sources of infection are still scarce. We aimed to detect and characterize the presence of Leptospira among small wild mammals from Villeta municipality, Colombia. Small wild mammals from three orders: Didelphimorphia, Chiroptera and Rodentia, were sampled in the region. DNA was extracted from kidney samples and screened for Leptospi…

Structure and Chemical Composition of ca. 10-Million-Year-Old (Late Miocene of Western Amazon) and Present-Day Teeth of Related Species.

Molecular information has been gathered from fossilized dental enamel, the best-preserved tissue of vertebrates. However, the association of morphological features with the possible mineral and organic information of this tissue is still poorly understood in the context of the emerging area of paleoproteomics. This study aims to compare the morphological features and chemical composition of dental enamel of extinct and extant terrestrial vertebrates of Crocodylia: Purussaurus sp. (extinct) and Melanosuchus niger (extant), and Rodentia: Neoepiblema sp. (extinct) and Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris (e…

Significant differences in the prevalence of Blastocystis were found among different animal groups (P < 0.05). Sequence analysis showed 7 known subtypes (ST2, ST4, ST5, ST …

The Distribution and Host-Association of the Vector Chigger Species Leptotrombidium imphalum in Southwest China.

Leptotrombidium imphalum is a species of chigger mites, and it can serve as a transmitting vector of scrub typhus. Southwest China is an important focus of scrub typhus. Based on the field investigation in southwest China from 2001 to 2022, this article presents the first report on the distribution and infestation of L. imphalum on rodents and other sympatric small mammals in the region. A total of 2161 L. imphalum were identified from 218 small mammal hosts in 21 of 114 survey sites. The 17 host species of L. imphalum crossed 13 genera and 5 families in 3 orders (Rodentia, Eulipotyphla, and S…

Ecological Niche Modeling of main reservoir hosts of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis in Iran.

Zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL), caused by Leishmania major, is a common zoonotic vector-borne disease in Iran. Close contact with infected reservoir hosts increases the probability of transmission of Leishmania parasite infections to susceptible humans. Four gerbil species (Rodentia: Gerbillidae) serve as the main reservoir hosts for ZCL in different endemic foci of Iran. These species include Rhombomys opimus, Meriones libycus, Meriones hurrianae and Tatera indica; while notable infection has been reported in Nesokia indica as well. The purpose of this study is to model the distributi…

Occurrence of ectoparasitic arthropods associated with rodents in Hail region northern Saudi Arabia.

Ectoparasitic arthropods are a diverse element of the Saudi fauna. Due to this, a survey of ectoparasites associated with rodents was conduc … attus rattus frugivorus, and Rattus rattus alexandrinus and one species of mouse Acomys dimidiatus (Rodentia: Muridae). The ectoparasites belong to four different groups: ticks, fleas, lice, and mites. Ticks were the highest in the number, while fleas were the lowest among all the extracted ectoparasite groups. The collected ectoparasitic arthropods consis …

Host-parasite interaction networks between nematodes and non-volant small mammals in Brazil: A systematic review and ecological network analysis.

No nematode species were found parasitizing hosts from both orders.
