LetibotulinumtoxinA for Rosacea: A Pilot Study.

Rosacea-associated erythema and flushing often remain inadequately controlled by standard therapies. Intradermal botulinum toxin A has emerged as a potential treatment targeting the neurovascular component of rosacea. This pilot study aimed to evaluate the safety and preliminary efficacy of intradermal letibotulinumtoxinA for persistent erythema and flushing in rosacea. Eleven patients with refractory erythematotelangiectatic rosacea received a single session of intradermal letibotulinumtoxinA (20 U total dose). Outcomes at 2 weeks included clinician- and patient-rated erythema severity, patie…

The role of vitamins and nutrients in rosacea.

Rosacea is a common inflammatory skin condition displaying symptoms like flushing, erythema, papules, and pustules. Oral antibiotics, despite long-term adverse effects, are often used due to topical treatment limitations, underscoring the need for cost-effective choices like dietary modifications. Our review investigates the role of vitamins and minerals in rosacea, and provides evidence-based recommendations for supplementation and topical treatment of these nutrients for rosacea. An online search was performed on PubMed, Web of Science, Science Direct, Google Scholar, and ClinicalTrials.gov …

Murine models of rosacea: a review.

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by facial flushing, erythema, telangiectasia, papules, and pustules. Its pathogenesis has not been fully understood. In 2017, the global ROSacea COnsensus (ROSCO) panel updated the diagnosis, classification, and assessment of rosacea. Phenotype-based treatments and long-term managements have also been recommended. Murine models are a powerful tool in unveiling and dissecting the mechanisms of human diseases. Here, we summarized murine models of rosacea developed or used in previous research, including LL-37 intradermal injection model, KL…

Acne and rosacea in skin of colour.

Acne and rosacea are common inflammatory skin conditions present in numerous racial and ethnic groups. There are distinct differences in clinical presentation, exacerbating factors, potential triggers and consequences of both conditions in individuals with skin of colour (SOC), classified as Fitzpatrick skin types III-VI. For example, acne can be complicated by the development of postinflammatory hyperpigmentation and keloid scarring in SOC, and this can influence treatment choice. Although rosacea is reported less frequently in SOC, this may be the result of delayed diagnosis or late presenta…

Rosacea and the Microbiome: A Systematic Review.

Rosacea, a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by recurrent episodes of facial flushing, erythema, pustules, and telangiectasia, largely affects fair-skinned women over 30 years of age. Although a long-recognized entity, the exact pathophysiology of this disease is still debated. Current theories highlight the role of the cutaneous microbiome and its associated inflammatory effects in rosacea's pathogenesis. However, microbiological reverberations are not limited to the skin, as recent studies have described the potential cutaneous effects of alterations in the gastrointestinal (GI…

[Ocular and cutaneous rosacea in a child].

Rosacea is a chronic skin disease characterized by erythema, telangiectasia, papules and pustules in the central facial region. It most often affects adults and is rare in children. Rosacea can also present ocular involvement. Symptoms can precede cutaneous findings, appear simultaneously or after them, with a higher risk of ocular complications in children. Because of low prevalence of rosacea in childhood, the diagnosis is frequently delayed. We report a 1-year-old boy with ocular and cutaneous rosacea who developed corneal opacities and visual impairment. Early diagnosis and treatment is co…

Demodex Infestation in Patients with Rosacea.

OBJECTIVE: Although the etiology of rosacea is not known exactly, it is thought as a multifactorial disease. Demodex spp. are asymptomatic saprophytic ectoparasites living in hair follicles and sebaceous glands. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of Demodex spp. in patients with rosacea and compare with the control group by using superficial skin biopsy method. METHODS: Seventy seven patients with rosacea and 31 control patients were included in the study. In patients, for the determination of density of Demodex spp., non-invasive standard superficial skin biopsy method wa…

Advances in Acne and Rosacea Therapy.

New topical therapies have demonstrated efficacy in patients with moderate or severe acne who might otherwise have required therapy with systemic antibiotics or isotretinoin. Increasing knowledge about the pathogenesis of acne has facilitated the development of therapies with novel modes of action. New and investigational therapies also are available or in development for the treatment of both the papulopustular and erythematous manifestations of rosacea. Rosacea and risk of cancer in Denmark.

BACKGROUND: Rosacea is a common facial skin disorder with an estimated prevalence of 5-10% among Caucasians. OBJECTIVE: We compared cancer incidence in patients previously diagnosed with rosacea with that in the general population. METHODS: Nationwide cohort study of the Danish population using individual-level linkage of administrative registers. All Danish citizens aged ≥18years were followed from January 1st 2008 to December 31st 2012. Patients with rosacea (the exposure) were compared with the general population, serving as control subjects. The outcome was a diagnosis of one of the foll…

What's new in acne and rosacea?

Acne and rosacea are common conditions seen every day by dermatologists. This review will discuss the most recent therapeutic options for patients with these conditions. Specifically, for acne, there will be a discussion of the use of isotretinoin at higher cumulative doses as well as a new formulation of isotretinoin, isotretinoin-lidose. Adult women with acne represent a growing population of patients who present for treatment of acne; the use of hormonal therapies as well as topical dapsone gel will be reviewed for these patients. For rosacea patients, the new topical agents - brimonidine g…

The "red face": Not always rosacea.

Facial erythema (the "red face") is a straightforward clinical finding, and it is evident even to the untrained eye; however, a red face does not represent a single cutaneous entity. It may be due to a plethora of distinct underlying conditions of varying severity, including rosacea, demodicosis, dermatomyositis, lupus erythematosus, allergic contact dermatitis, drug-induced erythema, and emotional blushing. In clinical practice, dermatologists do not encounter only one type of facial erythema but rather a number of different shades of red. This review presents the clinical spectrum of facial …

Prevalence of rosacea in community settings.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of rosacea is poorly characterized. Because selection bias may affect prevalence estimates, there is a need to characterize the prevalence of rosacea outside the clinic setting. OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of rosacea in community settings. METHODS: A clinical research fellow and a medical student stood in public places (a mall, the Department of Motor Vehicles, a grocery store) and examined consecutive individuals who passed by ≤ 2 yards away. They tallied demographic and descriptive data on the subject and included the subject in one of three categories: c…

The treatment of rosacea with topical ivermectin.

The treatment of rosacea is challenging because several pathophysiologic processes may be involved, including neurovascular dysregulation and alterations in innate immune status. Demodex mites may play a role in the latter mechanism. Topical ivermectin is a new therapeutic modality which demonstrates antiparasitic and anti-inflammatory properties. This article reviews published evidence related to the efficacy and safety of topical ivermectin. PubMed was utilized to search for key words "topical ivermectin", "ivermectin cream" and "rosacea". Three clinical trials were found that studied topica…

Rosacea: an update on medical therapies.

Rosacea is a common, chronic cutaneous condition that affects the face. Two topicals and one oral medication are currently approved for the treatment of rosacea, including azelaic acid, metronidazole, and sub-antimicrobial dose of doxycycline. Identification of subtypes can help guide treatment strategies. It is essential for psychosocial implications of rosacea to be considered and conservative management, such as nonpharmacologic routine skin care, must form an important part of the overall care. Recently, new insights into the pathophysiology of rosacea have led to the emergence of etiologi…
