Host association of Cryptosporidium parvum populations infecting domestic ruminants in Spain.

A stock of 148 Cryptosporidium parvum DNA extracts from lambs and goat kids selected from a previous study examining the occurrence of Cryptosporidium species and GP60 subtypes in diarrheic lambs and goat kids in northeastern Spain was further characterized by a multilocus fragment typing approach with six mini- and microsatellite loci. Various degrees of polymorphism were seen at all but the MS5 locus, although all markers exhibited two major alleles accounting for more than 75% of isolates. A total of 56 multilocus subtypes (MLTs) from lambs (48 MLTs) and goat kids (11 MLTs) were identified.

Semen processing and artificial insemination in health management of small ruminants.

Artificial insemination has changed the small ruminant industry and has allowed increased genetic improvement, better control of reproduction and sexually transmitted diseases, dissemination of valuable genetics and preservation of the genetics of endangered breeds. Recent developments in this technology have focused on preserving the vitality/fertilizing capability of fresh and frozen spermatozoa by improving the composition of extenders, and by changing cooling/freezing protocols. The other main issue is the development of minimal invasive techniques for proper deposition of fresh or frozen

Elimination of lyme disease spirochetes from ticks feeding on domestic ruminants.

To determine whether and which spirochetes are cleared from Ixodes ricinus ticks during feeding on ruminants, ticks were removed from goats and cattle grazing on tick-infested pastures. Although about a quarter of ticks questing on the pasture were infected by spirochetes, no molted ticks that had previously engorged to repletion on ruminants harbored Lyme disease spirochetes. Borrelia miyamotoi spirochetes, however, appear not to be eliminated. Thus, the more subadult ticks are diverted from reservoir-competent hosts to zooprophylactic ruminants, the smaller the risk of infection by Lyme dise…

Neuropathogenesis of naturally occurring encephalitis caused by Listeria monocytogenes in ruminants.

Listeriosis is a serious food-borne disease with increasing frequency in humans and ruminants. Despite the facts that in both hosts, listeriosis can occur as rhombencephalitis and ruminants are a reservoir of Listeria monocytogenes (LM) strains pathogenic for humans, little work has been done on the pathogenesis in ruminants. This study investigates the neuropathogenesis of listeric encephalitis in over 200 natural cases in cattle, sheep and goats by analyzing anatomical distribution, severity, bacterial load and temporal evolution of the lesions. Our results suggest that LM gains access to th…

Rinderpest and peste des petits ruminants viruses exhibit neurovirulence in mice.

Members of the morbillivirus genus, canine distemper (CDV), phocine distemper virus (PDV), and the cetacean viruses of dolphins and porpoises exhibit high levels of CNS infection in their natural hosts. CNS complications are rare for measles virus (MV) and are not associated with rinderpest virus (RPV) and peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) infection. However, it is possible that all morbilliviruses infect the CNS but in some hosts are rapidly cleared by the immune response. In this study, we assessed whether RPV and PPRV have the potential to be neurovirulent. We describe the outcome of …

Experimental peste des petits ruminants (goat plague) in goats and sheep.

In order to study the pathomorphology and immunohistochemistry of peste des petits ruminants, four goats and two sheep were inoculated intranasally with the Malig-Yemen strain of peste des petits ruminants virus. The animals developed fever, nasal discharge, oral erosions, cough and diarrhea. One goat and one sheep died and one moribund goat was killed. Three animals survived the infection. At necropsy, erosive stomatitis, pneumonia and gastroenteritis were found. Histopathologically the pneumonocytes and epithelial cells of the ileum had eosinophilic cytoplasmic and nuclear inclusions. By an …

A review of thiamine deficiency and its diagnosis, especially in ruminants.

Thiamine deficiency diseases are briefly reviewed with particular attention to the use of blood thiamine levels in their diagnosis. Blood thiamine levels below 50 nmol/l are considered significant with levels as low as 6-12 nmol/l often being found in suspected cases of polioencephalomalacia.

[Does the supply of magnesium affect the feed intake in ruminants?].

The magnesium balance is in a state of equilibrium in dairy cattle when the daily excretion of Mg in the urine is a least 2.5 g. (= 100 mM). When the daily urinary output is 25 l, this is equivalent to a concentration of at least 4 mM (= 100 mg/l). The production of milk was inadequate on a number of dairy farms, which was associated with loss of appetite of the cows. The concentration of Mg in the urine of various cows was found to be too low on these farms. When additional magnesium was supplied, the feed intake was restored within a few days and the milk production also increased. The findi

Small Ruminant Farming in Benin: Characterization, Knowledge and Practices of Breeders Facing Peste des Petits Ruminants.

A study was conducted across the Benin territory to assess the knowledge of small ruminant farmers about the Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) disease. The study involved 1381 farmers from 45 communes across all departments using a structured questionnaire to understand socio-economic characteristics, the genotype of farmers, and knowledge and practices in case of suspicion of PPR. Three distinct and homogeneous groups (G1, G2 and G3) were formed, with a chi-square test to compare the calculated frequencies. The majority of the farmers were young men (93.8%) and small animal handlers (< 20 ovin…

Nano/microencapsulation of feed additives for ruminal microbiome modulation and enteric methane mitigation in ruminants: a critical review.

The latest advances in nutrition, microbiology, and omics sciences are redefining strategies to improve health indices and productivity in livestock. A novel strategy focuses on the deliberate modulation of rumen and intestinal microbiome ecosystems, which, besides being complex, are crucial for animal performance. The use of feed additives, such as bioactive compounds derived from plants and probiotics, has a long tradition supported by their known antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties, among others. However, their practical efficacy is often compromised by their high s

Rumination in suicide-loss survivors: Psychometric evaluation of the Persian version of the Utrecht Grief Rumination Scale (UGRS).

BACKGROUND: Survivors of suicide loss (SLSs) represent a unique group that faces a heightened risk of developing complications related to grief, often characterized by ruminating on the reasons behind their loved one's suicide, which can affect their supportive social networks. Grief rumination is considered a transdiagnostic risk factor for mental health diseases, including prolonged grief. We evaluated the psychometric and reliability of the Iranian Utrecht Grief Rumination Scale (UGRS) among SLSs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study, conducted between 2023 and 2024, investiga

Investigating ruminal resident immune cells in dairy cattle before and after a subacute ruminal acidosis challenge.

Immune cells have been observed in many tissues of the mammal including the gut, liver, adipose, bone, and neural tissue. Our objective was to demonstrate whether immune cells are present within the stratified rumen epithelium of healthy lactating dairy cattle. We hypothesized that immune cells would be found in the rumen tissue and that the total amount of leukocytes present would increase during a ruminal acidosis challenge. We conducted a 2-phase experiment with 9 rumen-cannulated lactating Holstein cows. During phase 1, cows were fed a diet containing 31% NDF, 24% forage NDF, and 27% starc

Within-person Changes in Co-rumination and Rumination in Adolescence: Examining Heterogeneity and the Moderating Roles of Gender and Time.

Although previous work has consistently identified positive associations between co-rumination and rumination during adolescence, little to no research has examined how this relationship operates on the person-specific level. The current study aimed to extend current developmental theories of co-rumination and rumination by examining within-person associations between these constructs. Survey data was collected from 1502 adolescents (Mage = 13.20; 52% girls; 52% non-Hispanic White) every six-months across the span of 3.5 years. The results showed that at time-points when adolescents reported c

Do Correlations Between Mindfulness Components and Rumination in Student Athletes Support Mindfulness Training to Reduce Rumination?

In the present study, we examined the relationship between mindfulness and rumination among student-athletes. Ninety-seven young adult student-athletes (38.1% female, 61.9% male; Mage = 22.52, SD = 3.53) completed both the Mindfulness Inventory for Sport and the Ruminative Thought Style Questionnaire. Among these participants, we observed a significant positive correlation between rumination and the awareness sub-dimension of mindfulness. We also observed significant negative correlations between rumination and two scores from the Mindfulness Inventory for Sport: non-judgment and overall mindf

Training Positive Rumination in Expressive Writing to Enhance Psychological Adjustment and Working Memory Updating for Maladaptive Ruminators.

Rumination is associated with psychological adjustment and working memory (WM) capacity. Studies have shown that psychological interventions can reduce negative rumination and improve psychological adjustment and WM capacity. The present study investigated the effect of positive rumination training in expressive writing on psychological adjustment and WM updating capacity. Within an experimental design, positive rumination was manipulated for 10 participants who were maladaptive ruminators in an experiment using a 5-week training compared to the control group with nine participants. Results re

Intrusive Rumination, Deliberate Rumination, and Posttraumatic Growth Among Adolescents After a Tornado: The Role of Social Support.

Posttraumatic growth (PTG) may exist in trauma survivors, especially adolescents, whereas rumination is a typical cognitive characteristic among traumatized individuals. However, there were mixed relationships between rumination (intrusive rumination, deliberate rumination) and PTG. The study aimed to increase understanding of the relationships between them by investigating the role of social support among adolescents after the Yancheng tornado. Four hundred forty-three middle school students in the core area of the tornado were administered a revised social support scale based on Furman and B
