Role of rumination in the relationship between metacognition and shyness.

AIM: To explore the association between metacognitive beliefs, rumination and shyness in a non-clinical sample of adults. METHODS: One hundred and three healthy subjects from the general population were enrolled in the study. Shyness was evaluated using the Revised Cheek and Buss Shyness Scale, rumination was assessed using the Ruminative Response Scale, metacognition was evaluated using the Meta-Cognitions Questionnaire 30, and anxiety levels were measured using the State Trait Anxiety Inventory form Y. Correlation analyses, mediation models and 95% bias-corrected and accelerated (BCaCI) boo

Rumination in bipolar disorder: evidence for an unquiet mind.

Depression in bipolar disorder has long been thought to be a state characterized by mental inactivity. However, recent research demonstrates that patients with bipolar disorder engage in rumination, a form of self-focused repetitive cognitive activity, in depressed as well as in manic states. While rumination has long been associated with depressed states in major depressive disorder, the finding that patients with bipolar disorder ruminate in manic states is unique to bipolar disorder and challenges explanations put forward for why people ruminate. We review the research on rumination in bipo

Rumination fosters indecision in dysphoria.

This study investigated the effects of rumination on indecision, assessed as high levels of perceived decision difficulty, low confidence in a decision, and decision latency. Dysphoric and nondysphoric participants were assigned to either a rumination or a distraction induction. Subsequently, they made four decisions with alleged real-life consequences. As predicted, rumination exhibited a negative effect on dysphoric participants' decision-making process. They experienced the decisions as more difficult and had less confidence in their choices. No effects emerged on the measure of decision ti

The Effect of Sleep Problems on Suicidal Risk among Young Adults in the Presence of Depressive Symptoms and Cognitive Processes.

We aimed to investigate the effect of sleep problems, depression, and cognitive processes on suicidal risk among 460 young adults. They completed self-report questionnaires assessing suicidal behavior, sleep quality, depressive symptoms, emotion regulation, rumination, and impulsivity. Suicidal participants exhibited higher rates of depressive symptoms, sleep problems, expressive suppression, rumination, and impulsivity. A confirmatory factor analysis model revealed pathways to suicidal risk that showed no direct pathways between sleep problems and suicidal risk. Instead, sleep was related to

Intergenerational development of rumination in adolescents with internalizing disorders: The mediating role of maternal rejecting parenting style and intergenerational trauma.

BACKGROUND: As a cognitive vulnerability factor for adolescent internalizing problems, rumination develops through several main mechanisms, with intergenerational transmission being one of the significant mechanisms. However, the specific pathways of intergenerational transmission remain unclear, particularly regarding the contributions of parenting style and intergenerational transmission of trauma. OBJECTIVE: The study investigates how maternal rumination contributes to the development of rumination in adolescents with internalizing disorders. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: We included 130 pair

Cross-Cultural Influences on the Association Between Rumination and Psychopathology: A Systematic Review.

Rumination is a transdiagnostic process associated with psychopathology. While culture shapes cognitive and emotion processing, cultural influences on rumination remain unclear. Therefore, this systematic review aimed to examine cultural differences in the association between rumination and psychopathology. To address this aim, we conducted a literature search (May 2024), which identified 24 eligible studies. We conducted an exploratory meta-analysis examining whether cultural group moderated the association between rumination and psychopathology. First, we found cultural differences in the as

Associations between rumination, depression, and distress tolerance during CBT treatment for depression in a tertiary care setting.

BACKGROUND: Rumination is strongly associated with depressive symptom severity and course. However, changes in rumination during outpatient cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and their links to baseline features such as distress tolerance and clinical outcomes, have received limited attention. METHODS: 278 outpatients with depression received group or individual CBT. Measures of rumination, distress tolerance, and depression symptom severity were assessed at baseline and periodically during treatment. Mixed effect and regression-based models evaluated changes over time, and associations betw

Reduced autobiographical memory specificity relates to weak resistance to proactive interference.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Reduced autobiographical memory specificity (rAMS), experiencing intrusive memories, and rumination appear to be risk factors for depression and depressive relapse. The aim of the current study was to investigate whether a weak resistance to proactive interference (PI) might underlie this trio of cognitive risk factors. Resistance to PI refers to being able to ignore cognitive distracters that were previously relevant but became irrelevant for current task goals. METHOD: Students (N = 65) and depressed patients (N = 37) completed tasks measuring resistance to PI and

Illness Attitudes Associated with Seasonal Depressive Symptoms: An Examination Using a Newly Developed Implicit Measure.

The Dual Vulnerability Model of seasonal depression posits that seasonal vegetative symptoms are due to a physiological vulnerability, but cognitive and mood symptoms are the result of negative appraisal of vegetative changes. In addition, rumination may be associated with stronger negative attitudes toward vegetative symptoms. This is the first study to examine implicit attitudes toward vegetative symptoms. We hypothesized that illness attitudes about fatigue moderate the relationship between the severity of vegetative symptoms and the severity of cognitive symptoms and that the illness attit

Body talk and body-related co-rumination: associations with body image, eating attitudes, and psychological adjustment.

Talk about physical appearance and body image is common among young women. We investigated how body talk (negative, positive/self-accepting, and co-ruminative) is related to body image, body-related cognitive distortions, disordered eating, psychological adjustment, and friendship quality via hierarchical regression analyses (controlling for social desirability and body mass index). In a sample of young adult women (N=203), negative body talk was, as predicted, negatively related to body satisfaction and self-esteem and positively related to appearance investment, body-related cognitive distor

Cognitive Emotion Regulation Strategies in Chinese Adolescents with Overweight and Obesity.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between psychological factors and obesity has become a hot topic in psychosomatic research. The aim of this study was to examine the characteristics of cognitive emotion regulation (CER) strategies in Chinese adolescents with different weight status. METHODS: Using stratified random cluster sampling, 700 and 321 adolescents were defined as adolescents with overweight status and obese status, respectively. One thousand and twenty-one adolescents with normal-weight status were also selected. All participants completed a general questionnaire and Chinese version of t

Distinguishing worry from rumination in older people: a preliminary investigation.

Anxiety and depression are common mental health problems in later life. Since worry and rumination are thought to underpin the respective primary cognitive processes in anxiety and depression, we developed a measure to distinguish worry from rumination in later life. The Ruminative Response Scale was adapted to include items that characterise the cognitive features of worry. We examined its properties using 92 clinical and non-clinical participants, aged over 65. Factor analysis demonstrated a three-factor structure: brooding, reflection and worry with internal consistencies of alpha = 0.72, a

The double-edged sword of filial piety: A moderated parallel mediation of caregiver burden, rumination, and psychological distress among Chinese family caregivers of cancer patients.

Family caregivers of cancer patients in China experience substantial caregiver burden and psychological distress. However, the cognitive pathways linking caregiver burden to psychological distress, and the role of filial piety in this process, remain insufficiently understood. This study tested a moderated mediation model in which caregiver burden was linked to psychological distress through brooding and reflective rumination, with reciprocal filial piety (RFP) and authoritarian filial piety (AFP) as moderators. Data were collected from 738 caregivers in a cross-sectional survey. Results showe

Cognitive mechanisms linking low trait positive affect to depressive symptoms: a prospective diary study.

Low trait positive affect represents an affective vulnerability to depression, but little research has examined mechanisms linking low trait positive affect to depressive symptoms. The current study investigated whether the cognitive strategies of dampening and positive rumination mediated the prospective association between low trait positive affect and depressive symptoms. Participants were 209 undergraduate students who participated in an eight-week online study. Depressive symptoms and trait temperament were assessed at baseline, followed by seven weekly questionnaires which assessed cogni

Interference resolution moderates the impact of rumination and reappraisal on affective experiences in daily life.

Research has shown that cognitive control processes play a central role in emotion regulation. While most research has examined whether individual differences in such processes are related to the use of these strategies, a crucial next step involves examining whether such differences influence their impact on people's feelings, especially in normal daily life. The present study examined whether impairments in cognitive control (measured using an affective interference resolution task) moderate the impact of using rumination and reappraisal on affective experiences in everyday life (assessed us

Sticky thoughts: depression and rumination are associated with difficulties manipulating emotional material in working memory.

Cognitive inflexibility may play an important role in rumination, a risk factor for the onset and maintenance of depressive episodes. In the study reported here, we assessed participants' ability to either reverse or maintain in working memory the order of three emotion or three neutral words. Differences (or sorting costs) between response latencies in backward trials, on which participants were asked to reverse the order of the words, and forward trials, on which participants were asked to remember the words in the order in which they were presented, were calculated. Compared with control pa

Rumination as a Transdiagnostic Phenomenon in the 21st Century: The Flow Model of Rumination.

Rumination and its related mental phenomena share associated impairments in cognition, such as executive functions and attentional processes across different clinical conditions (e.g., in psychotic disorders). In recent decades, however, the notion of rumination has been increasingly narrowed to the "self-focused" type in depressive disorders. A closer review of the literature shows that rumination may be construed as a broader process characterized by repetitive thoughts about certain mental contents that interfere with one's daily activities, not only limited to those related to "self". A psychometric evaluation of the Swedish version of the Responses to Positive Affect questionnaire.

BACKGROUND: Previous research mainly focused on responses to negative affect in relation to depression, and less on responses to positive affect. Cognitive responses to positive affect are interesting in the context of emotion regulation and emotion disorders: positive rumination is associated to hypomania risk and bipolar disorder. There is to date no questionnaire in Swedish that captures the phenomena of cognitive response styles. AIMS: The aim of this study was to investigate the replicability of the Responses to Positive Affect questionnaire (RPA) in a newly translated Swedish version an

Self-compassion in depression: associations with depressive symptoms, rumination, and avoidance in depressed outpatients.

Self-compassion involves being kind to oneself when challenged with personal weaknesses or hardship and has been claimed to be associated with resilience in various areas. So far, there are only a handful of studies that investigate self-compassion and its relation to clinical depression. Therefore, the principal goals of the present study were (a) to compare self-compassion in clinically depressed patients and never-depressed subjects, (b) to investigate self-compassion and its relation to cognitive-behavioral avoidance and rumination in depressed outpatients, and (c) to investigate ruminatio
