The detection of a latent viral flora intrinsic to the central nervous system (CNS) raises the problem to know if some neuropathogenic strains have the property of initiating persistent infections or if the persistence is the result of the immune response particularities at the CNS level. A review is done of the pathogenic explanations of virus persistence in SSPE, followed by the discussion about two pathogenic alternatives issues from the author's studies: the antigenic "drift" hypothesis and the one of the defective interfering particles preferential synthesis.

A 9-yr-old girl developed delayed acute measles inclusion body encephalitis, which was different from subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) in clinical course. Measles virus was demonstrated by electron microscopy, immunohistochemistry, and in situ hybridization. Contrary to the most previous reports, matrix (M) protein was present in the brain, cerebrospinal fluid, and serum and was demonstrated by Western blot analysis and in situ hybridization. The hybridization was performed by a nonradioactive digoxigenin method.

This study reports the clinical picture and measles virus antibody titres in 32 patients with cases of suspected subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE). The history of myoclonic jerks, mental regression, inability to walk and slurred speech, were noted in these cases. The EEG showed generalised periodic complexes in twenty nine patients and only in three patients the EEG was not available. In all the above mentioned patients measles occurred at an early age (within a year).

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis, usually a rapidly progressive and fatal disease, is a slow virus infection, where measles virus persists in cells of the CNS and in lymphocytes. Four patients, 3 boys and 1 girl, are described, who presented a characteristic disease course, beginning at the age of 12 to 14 years after they had contracted measles infection during infancy or early childhood. The diagnostic criteria including clinical and laboratory CSF findings are summarized, and epidemiologic features related to measles and measles immunization are briefly discussed. In two patients specifi

Highly immunogenic, safe, and effective attenuated measles vaccines, stabilized to lengthen duration of potency under field conditions, are available. Measles can be controlled while studies continue to define the molecular change in the viral genome responsible for attenuation and to clone the genes that specify for the two major surface glycoprotein antigens, the hemagglutinin (HA) and fusion (F) proteins. Purification of HA and F antigens will facilitate studies of cell-mediated immunity. Elucidation of host cell-dependent lack of synthesis of the internal membrane protein in the brains of

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a progressive encephalitis caused by persistent measles virus infection and is mostly described as small case series in literature. We aimed to describe the clinical spectrum, radiological features, outcomes, and prognostic factors in patients with SSPE and provide a comparison of childhood- versus late-onset disease.
METHODS: An observational study was conducted in a tertiary hospital in India, documenting the spectrum and functional outcome [modified Rankin Scale (mRS)] of patients with SSPE.
RESULTS: We enrolled 144

Neurovirulent TYCSA strain and attenuated Schwarz strain of measles virus and Halle strain of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) virus replicated in cultures of human lymphoid cell lines of the T-cell type, MOLT-3, MOLT-4 and CCRF-CEM. TYCSA and Halle strains grew rapidly, but Schwarz strain grew slowly in these cell lines. Furthermore, these three strains established persistent infection in CCRF-CEM cells but not in the other cell lines. In these persistently infected cultures an almost entire population of cells were shown to be infected and infectious virus was produced constantly f

PURPOSE: Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a fatally progressive neurodegenerative disorder caused by persistent measles virus infection of the CNS. We report on the visual and neurological outcomes of SSPE in a patient who presented with necrotizing retinitis three decades after measles infection.
METHODS: Descriptive case report.
RESULTS: A 31-year-old woman presented with sudden blurred vision of the right eye (RE). Visual acuity (VA) was finger counting in RE and 0.8 in the left eye (LE). Funduscopy revealed RE multifocal macular yellowish lesions, LE peripheral retinal atrop

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis is a rare disorder of late childhood and early adolescence Affected patients usually show behavioural and intellectual disturbance and involuntary movements before dying in coma after about 12 months. At some stage most have characteristic electroencephalographic abnormalities. Pathologically, changes in the brain are those of subacute encephalitis with a variable gliosis of the white matter, and sometimes intranuclear inclusion bodies in neurones and glial cells. Recent studies in many patients have shown high levels of circulating anti-measles antibodies,

A persistent infection was established in a cell line derived from a hamster brain tumor (HBT) with the HBS strain of measles-subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) virus. The persistently infected cells (HBT-M) were studied with regard to their growth in vitro and their transplantability in vivo. Although the growth of the HBT-M cells paralleled that of the HBT cells in vitro their transplantability was decreased in weanling hamsters. Hydrocortisone treatment of the hamsters abrogated the lowered transplantability restoring the tumor-producing capacity to levels comparable to the HBT cell

Two patients presented with retinitis as the initial clinical manifestation of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE), a delayed neurologic complication of measles. In one patient, the ocular involvement preceded the neurologic symptoms by 4 weeks and in the other patient by 4 years. The diagnosis of SSPE was suspected when neuropsychiatric manifestations appeared and was confirmed by the typical panencephalitic electroencephalography changes, neuroimaging features of panencephalitis, and high titers of measles antibodies in serum and cerebrospinal fluid. Although SSPE is an untreatable il

Measles virus particles were visualized in the CSF of two patients with verified subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) by using scanning electron microscopy. Immunologic identification of the accumulated particles was performed with monoclonal antibodies, directly conjugated to carboxylated microspheres, specific for different measles virus antigens. The beads were amassed on the filter surface after a 1-hr incubation in the CSF. Spherical particles with a diameter ranging between 150 and 500 nm were detected. Such particles bound specifically to latex beads covered by monoclonal antibodi

A child with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, being treated in the UKALL II Trial, had while in remission an attack of measles and made a normal recovery. Four months later she developed an acute encephalopathy and died within two weeks. The brain showed mild inflammatory features and widespread inclusion bodies in neurones and glial cells. Immunofluorescence proved an infection with measles virus. Similar cases have been called SSPE; reasons are given for preferring the term "measles inclusion-body encephalitis".

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) developed in a patient in whom natural measles infection was anteceded by immunization with measles immune serum globulin (ISG). This observation prompted experimental studies of the role of antibody in viral persistence. When Balb/c mice were infected with the hamster neurotropic measles virus, acute encephalopathy was fatal in 80% of the animals. When measles antibody was administered 3 days after virus inoculation, the acute disease was abolished and subacute encephalitis had a 30% mortality. The subacute disease was characterized by the presence o

Three cytopathic strains of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) virus were isolated from brain biopsies of three patients. These strains were isolated and maintained by cocultivation of infected brain cells with fresh Vero cells. The biological characteristics of two strains were studied. It was found that these strains remain cell-associated after repeated cocultivations with Vero cells and produce plaques under fluid medium or tragacanth overlay. The correlation with measles virus was demonstrated by the plaque reduction test as well as by the immunofluorescence test. Large numbers of

A subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) strain of measles virus has been previously shown to be composed of two interrelated but separable viral variants. One of these, the syncytiagenic or S variant, resembles defective, cell-associated strains of measles virus; while the other, the round cell inducing or RC variant, induces a highly productive infection in cell culture. It is now reported that the S variant is more neurovirulent in newborn hamsters than the RC variant and that viral replication in infected CNS tissues occurs in two phases. Early in the infection cell-free virus, compose

A 19-year-old female patient presented in an acute state of akinetic mutism. Serological analysis of serum and cerebrospinal fluid demonstrated the presence of antibodies to measles virus. CT scan carried out during this acute phase of relapse demonstrated white matter enhancement affecting the cortical white matter of the frontal lobes and corpus callosum. These features indicate that active demyelination occurs during acute relapse in subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) and suggest that immunotherapy should be considered during this acute phase.

New onset movement disorders are a common clinical problem in pediatric neurology and can be infectious, inflammatory, metabolic, or functional in origin. Encephalitis is one of the more important causes of new onset movement disorders, and movement disorders are a common feature (~25%) of all encephalitis. However, all encephalitides are not the same, and movement disorders are a key diagnostic feature that can help the clinician identify the etiology of the encephalitis, and therefore appropriate treatment is required. Movement disorders are a characteristic feature of autoimmune encephaliti
