Primary Sjögren's syndrome: new perspectives on salivary gland epithelial cells.

Primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) is a chronic autoimmune disease primarily affecting exocrine glands such as the salivary glands, leading to impaired secretion and sicca symptoms. As the mainstay of salivation, salivary gland epithelial cells (SGECs) have an important role in the pathology of pSS. Emerging evidence suggests that the interplay between immunological factors and SGECs may not be the initial trigger or the sole mechanism responsible for xerostomia in pSS, challenging conventional perceptions. To deepen our understanding, current research regarding SGECs in pSS was reviewed. Among …

[Therapy of Sialorrhea with Botulinum Toxin - An Update].

The most important salivary glands are the paired parotid and submandibular glands. Adults produce 1 to 1.5 liters of saliva which are then regularly swallowed. When the act of swallowing is disturbed, salivation occurs. More rarely, the cause can be found in increased saliva production, for example, when caused through medication. Sialorrhea impairs the quality of life substantially and is frequently often socially stigmatizing. Therapy includes conservative measures such as functional dysphagia therapy, oral or transdermal application of anticholinergics, as well as, in selected cases, radia…

Molecular Recognition of Nerve Agents and Their Organophosphorus Surrogates: Toward Supramolecular Scavengers and Catalysts.

Nerve agents are tetrahedral organophosphorus compounds (OPs) that were developed in the last century to irreversibly inhibit acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and therefore impede neurological signaling in living organisms. Exposure to OPs leads to a rapid development of symptoms from excessive salivation, nasal congestion and chest pain to convulsion and asphyxiation which if left untreated may lead to death. These potent toxins are prepared on a large scale from inexpensive staring materials, making it feasible for terrorist groups or states to use them against military and civilians. The existin…

Green Tobacco Sickness: A Brief Review.

Green tobacco sickness (GTS) is the condition that mainly affects the tobacco harvesters. The condition is prevalent in Asian and South American tobacco harvesters. The present review was conducted to discuss the etiology, epidemiology, symptoms, and prevention of GTS. It is caused by the absorption of nicotine through the skin while the workers are engaged in handling the uncured tobacco leaves. The symptoms include nausea, vomiting, pallor, dizziness, headaches, increased perspiration, chills, abdominal pain, diarrhea, increased salivation, prostration, weakness, breathlessness, and occasion…

A case of acute postoperative transitory sialadenosis of the submandibular glands in a healthy dog.

A 1-year-old healthy female cross-breed dog, weighing 4.5 kg, was scheduled for elective neutering. Fentanyl (5 µg/kg) and propofol (4 mg/kg … he size of the swellings subsequently diminished, completely subsiding after 2 hr, as did the hyper-salivation. To the authors' knowledge, this represents the first case report of an acute transient swelling of submandibular glands after general anesthesia in a dog.

[Burning mouth syndrome (glossalgia)].

Burning mouth syndrome (glossalgia) is manifested by oral pin and tingling sensations, numbness and even burning and severe pains, more frequently in the tongue. Unpleasant sensations may involve the anterior two thirds of the tongue or be extended to the front part of the hard palate and the mucous membrane of the lower lip. This condition is characterized by "mirror" and "food dominant" symptoms, disordered salivation, dysgeusia, or psychological disorders. The disease shows a chronic course. Its etiology may be multifactorial. There are no universally accepted diagnostic criteria; the diagn…

Quality of life outcome analysis in patients undergoing submandibular duct repositioning surgery for sialorrhoea.

Bilateral submandibular duct transposition is one of several surgical methods described to control sialorrhoea in the paediatric patient. The purpose of this study is to assess the effect of submandibular duct repositioning surgery on the quality of life of children using the Glasgow Benefit Inventory outcome measure. Consecutive children who underwent submandibular duct repositioning surgery were invited to participate in the study. The parents or guardians of children who gave consent were interviewed. The carer's opinion of the change in salivation, responses to the items in the Glasgow Ben…

Pontine myelinolysis in a child with carbamate poisoning.

Carbamate and organophosphate pesticides are widely used all over the world. Poisoning with these substances may produce both immediate and delayed neurotoxic effects. We report the case of a 4-year-old boy who was admitted to the Pediatric Department of the Second University of Naples for evaluation of stupor, lethargy, severe hypotonia, generalized weakness of his arms and legs, ataxia, dysmetria, miosis, excessive salivation and tearing. The pesticide carbaryl (1-naphthyl-N-methylcarbamate) was identified in blood and urine samples. On admission, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was unremar…

Management of seizures in children with falciparum malaria.

Falciparum malaria is the most common cause of convulsions in children admitted to hospital in malaria endemic areas. Detection of convulsions requires close monitoring and one should be on the look out for signs of subtle convulsions. About a third of acute seizures in children with cerebral malaria, do not manifest as convulsions, but as changes in eye deviation, salivation and/or eye deviation. It is important to terminate convulsions lasting more than 5 min, since prolonged convulsions are associated with neurological deficits in survivors of children with severe malaria. Initial managemen…

[On the subject of the cyclic vomiting syndrome].

The cyclic vomiting syndrome is defined by episodes of vomiting lasting from hours to days with free intervals between episodes. Various symptoms can be associated with vomiting: nausea, abdominal pain, photophobia, fever, pallor, dehydratation, excess salivation, social withdrawal. Some factors often precipitate the crisis: infection, psychological stresses, menstruation. Excluding a medical condition, especially a gastro-intestinal or a neurological disease is compulsory for the diagnostic of cyclic vomiting syndrome. The cyclic vomiting syndrome shares many common features with migraine inc…

A retrospective study of oesophageal endoscopy in cattle - oesophagoscopy for diagnosis of mucosal disease.

Oesophageal endoscopy in cattle has been rarely reported in the literature. It has, however, been used for many years as an aid to the diagnosis and treatment of illnesses of the upper gastrointestinal tract in small animals and horses. We have assessed the potential value of oesophagoscopy on 120 bovine patients presented at the 2nd Medical Clinic for Ruminants and Swine at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna, over a period of three years. In the course of the study, cattle exhibiting symptoms such as salivation, regurgitation or swelling in the neck region were referred for endosco…

Immunology of interactions between ticks and laboratory animals.

There is good reason to believe that the resistance to ixodid ticks acquired by guinea pigs, rabbits and mice is immunologically mediated. One proposed mechanism for this resistance, which may well be common to all these laboratory animals, involves cutaneous hypersensitivity reactions. Basophils accumulate at tick attachment sites in the skin of resistant animals and degranulate in response to tick salivary antigens, releasing histamine and other mediators. The mediators may directly cause ticks to cease salivating and feeding and then to detach, or they may induce reflex grooming reactions b

Suspected poisoning of a goat by giant hogweed.

A five-year-old male African pygmy goat became ill four weeks after transfer from a zoological garden to a municipal park. The animal was subdued, refused to eat and drink and showed profuse salivation. Examination of the mouth revealed severe ulceration. The condition gradually responded to nursing and supportive therapy. Circumstantial evidence suggested the possibility that the lesions were caused by giant hogweed (Heracleum mantegazzianum). Supportive evidence that the plant could produce lesions was provided by the application of a cut stem to the hard palate and a solution of various dil…

[The relationship between pilocarpine induced autonomic ganglia stimulating activity and salivary secretion of submandibular gland in pithed rat].

Superior cervical ganglion (SCG)-mediated effect of Pilocarpine (pilo.) on salivation of the rat submandibular gland was investigated. A total of 32 SD male rats, aged 12 weeks was divided into 4 experimental groups I to IV. They were anesthetized by pentobarbital (75 mg/kg, i.p.) and tracheotomized to allow artificial respiration. These rats were then ectomized only right SCG, leaving left SCG and injected with pilo. (8 mg./kg, i.v.). Rats of group I which were treated in the manner stated above were used as a control. Rats of group II and IV, of which adrenal glands were removed 18 hr before…

Detection of sheep-associated malignant catarrhal fever from clinical cases in Ethiopian cattle.

Mucoid nasal discharge, loss of weight, decreased milk production, diarrhoea, salivation, dyspnoea, fever, lacrimation, bilateral corneal opacity and bloody urine were observed in cattle located in the Arbe Gona district of southern Ethiopia. The disease was associated with a high case fatality rate: diseased cattle died within four to five days after showing clinical signs. The clinical presentation, gross pathological observations, histopathological findings and epidemiological data strongly suggested malignant catarrhal fever. Subsequently, the ovine herpesvirus type 2 (OvHV-2) DNA polymera…
