Biomass char-mediated microbial directed remodeling of habitats and productivity regeneration in arid region salt-affected soils.

Soil salinization constitutes a critical bottleneck for sustainable agricultural development in arid regions. In this study, a coupled remed … bolic reprogramming of microbial strains, leading to a trinity metabolic phenotype characterized by salt tolerance, soil amelioration, and growth promotion. Under salt stress, the retention of salt-tolerant metabolites was 2.7 times higher than that observed with the strains alone. Pot experiments further confirmed that the coupled system exerted significantly s …

Exploring stress-tolerant plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria from groundnut rhizosphere soil in semi-arid regions of Ethiopia.

The potential of rhizobacteria with plant growth promoting (PGP) traits in alleviating abiotic stresses, especially drought, is significant. However, their exploitation in the semi-arid regions of Ethiopian soils remains largely unexplored. This research aimed to isolate and evaluate the PGP potential of bacterial isolates collected from groundnut cultivation areas in Ethiopia. Multiple traits were assessed, including phosphate solubilization, indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) production, ammonia production, salt and heavy metal tolerance, drought tolerance, enzyme activities, hydrogen cyanide produc

Genome-Wide Characterization of the DUF966 Gene Family in Rice and Functional Analysis of OsDSR6 via Overexpression.

We previously identified seven members of the domain of unknown function 966 (DUF966) family in rice and showed that OsDSR2 and OsDSR3 regulate tolerance to drought, salinity and alkali stresses. However, bioinformatic characterization of this family remains limited, and the biological functions of the remaining members are largely unexplored. In this study, we performed a systematic bioinformatic analysis of the structure and potential function of the rice DUF966 family and focused on the unidentified member OsDSR6 in salinity tolerance. Phylogenetic and collinearity analyses showed that DUF9

A comparative analysis of the adaptability of salt stress between two flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) genotypes, Flanders and Astella, having contrasting lignan contents.

A comparative analysis of NaCl-stressed flax genotypes reveals that microRNA828a, microRNA399g, microRNA168a, catalase, shoot length, and shoot dry weight are the most influential salt stress-responsive variables irrespective of the lignan (secoisolariciresinol diglucoside) content declared for the genotypes. Lignans are powerful antioxidants and plant defence molecules whose roles in mitigating salt stress are rarely studied or understood, particularly in flax (Linum usitatissimum L.). Flax is a rich source of lignans. This study assessed the response to salt stress in two flax genotypes, Fla

Sympathetic nervous system in salt-sensitive and obese hypertension: amelioration of multiple abnormalities by a central sympatholytic agent.

Excess activity of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) is linked to human obese hypertension and to salt-sensitive hypertension. Paradoxically, reduced SNS activity has been implicated as a contributor to obesity, particularly in animal models, and salt loading usually inhibits SNS activity. We have investigated the relationship between SNS activity, diet, and hypertension in the obese spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHROB), a model with a recessive obesity trait superimposed on a hypertensive background with multiple metabolic abnormalities resembling human syndrome X. We examined the role o

Insights into effects of salt stress on the oil-degradation capacity, cell response, and key metabolic pathways of Bacillus sp. YM1 isolated from oily food waste compost.

A novel bacterial strain, Bacillus sp. YM1, was isolated from compost for the efficient degradation of oily food waste under salt stress. The strain's lipase activity, oil degradation ability, and tolerance to salt stress were evaluated in a liquid medium. Additionally, the molecular mechanisms (including key genes and functional processes) underlying the strain's salt-resistant degradation of oil were investigated based on RNA-Seq technology. The results showed that after 24 h of microbial degradation, the degradation rate of triglycerides in soybean oil was 80.23% by Bacillus sp. YM1 at a 30

Shared salinity tolerance invalidates a test for the malaria vector Anopheles farauti s.s. on Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands [corrected].

Among the Punctulatus Group of Anopheles mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae), first-instar larvae of the medically unimportant freshwater Anopheles farauti species No. 7 survives a seawater tolerance test (STT) that was previously thought to be diagnostic for the saltwater-tolerant malaria vector species, An. farauti Laveran s.s. Salt tolerance in these two closely related isomorphic species appears to be a shared derived character within the Farauti Complex. Failure to differentiate An. farauti s.s. from An. farauti No.7 will overestimate potential malaria vector numbers and waste limited larval …

Evaluation of the growth-inducing efficacy of various Bacillus species on the salt-stressed tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.).

Plants are affected by salt stress in a variety of ways, including water deficiency, ion toxicity, nutrient imbalance, and oxidative stress, all of which can cause cellular damage or plant death. Halotolerant plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) could be a viable alternative for tomato plants growing in arid and semi-arid environments. The aim of this research was to isolate halotolerant plant growth promoting Bacillus sp. to promote tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) growth and salt stress resistance. 107 PGPR strains were isolated from the rhizospheres of 'Kesudo' (Butea monosperm

Acid and bile tolerance of Lactobacillus isolated from chicken intestine.

Twelve Lactobacillus strains isolated from chicken intestine were used to investigate acid and bile tolerance in vitro. Ten out of the 12 strains were slightly affected by 0.3% bile salts, showing a delay of growth (d) of 0.6-37.2 min compared with growth in control cultures. Two strains were not affected by the bile salts. Of the 12 strains, seven could be arbitrarily classified as resistant (d < 15 min) and five as tolerant (15 min < d < or = 40 min). Lactobacillus strains from the caecum showed better tolerance to acid than those from the ileum. Generally, the survival of the ileal strains

Genome-wide identification and characterization of the growth-regulating factor gene family in oat (Avena sativa L.) and functional analysis of AsGRF17 under drought stress.

Oat (Avena sativa L.) is an important dual-purpose crop used for both food and feed; however, drought stress severely restricts its growth and productivity. Growth-regulating factors (GRFs) are key regulators of plant growth and development and are also involved in plant responses to abiotic stresses. Nevertheless, the GRF gene family in oat and its potential role in drought tolerance remain largely unclear. In this study, the GRF gene family in oat was systematically identified and characterized using bioinformatics analyses, including phylogenetic analysis, conserved motif analysis, and cis-

H2S Alleviates Salinity Stress in Cucumber by Maintaining the Na+/K+ Balance and Regulating H2S Metabolism and Oxidative Stress Response.

Salinity stress from soil or irrigation water can significantly limit the growth and development of plants. Emerging evidence suggests that hydrogen sulfide (H2S), as a versatile signal molecule, can ameliorate salt stress-induced adverse effects. However, the possible physiological mechanism underlying H2S-alleviated salt stress in cucumber remains unclear. Here, a pot experiment was conducted with an aim to examine the possible mechanism of H2S in enhancement of cucumber salt stress tolerance. The results showed that H2S ameliorated salt-induced growth inhibition and alleviated the reduction

Mitigation of salinity stress in cucumber seedlings by exogenous hydrogen sulfide.

This research hypothesized that tolerance of cucumber seedlings to salinity stress could be increased by hydrogen sulfide (H2S) treatments. In pot experiments, the cucumber seedlings were exposed to three levels of salt stress (0, 50 and 100 mM NaCl), and NaHS as H2S donor was foliar applied to the cucumber seedlings at five different doses (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 µM). The effects of the treatments on cucumber seedlings were tested with plant growth properties as well as physiological and biochemical analyses. As the salinity level increased, plant growth properties and chlorophyll reading valu
