Management of unusual case of self-inflicted penetrating craniocerebral injury by a nail.

During war, sharp high-speed missiles have been driven inside the brain; however, in civilian practice it is rare to see such episodes. An approximately 10-cm long nail was driven inside the brain in an attempt to commit suicide by a schizophrenic patient. The case is being reported for its rarity in civilian practice and as a case of clinical interest. After investigating the patient by plain X-rays and a CT scan, he was operated by a neurosurgical team and the nail was successfully removed. In post-operative phase, patient was given medical and psychiatric care along with psychological couns

Self-management for osteoarthritis of the knee: does mode of delivery influence outcome?

BACKGROUND: Self-management has become increasingly popular in the management of chronic diseases. There are many different self-management models. Meta analyses of arthritis self-management have concluded that it is difficult to recommend any one program in preference to another due to inconsistencies in the study designs used to evaluate different programs. The Stanford Arthritis Self-Management Program (ASMP), most commonly delivered by trained lay leaders, is a generic program widely used for people with rheumatological disorders. We have developed a more specific program expressly for peop…

The effects of weight management programs on self-esteem in pediatric overweight populations.

OBJECTIVE: Review published findings on self-esteem and pediatric overweight, and changes in self-esteem subsequent to weight management programs. METHODS: We used PsycInfo and MedLine searches to identify peer-reviewed journal articles examining self-esteem changes following participation in weight management programs. RESULTS: Data regarding the relationship between self-esteem and obesity is mixed. Factors that place overweight children "at-risk" for low self-esteem include early adolescence, female gender, identification with majority cultural standards of body shape, exposure to teasing

A review of measures of self-management of type 1 diabetes by youth and their parents.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper was to identify and critique relevant existing instruments designed to measure self-management of type 1 diabetes in children and adolescents. METHODS: Literature on the self-management of type 1 diabetes in children and adolescents was systematically searched to identify instruments measuring self-management. After eliminating instruments that measured only one aspect of self-management, those published prior to DCCT findings, and those for which little information was available, 6 instruments were identified for review. Each instrument is discussed in term…

Cognitive predictors of self-management behavior of asthmatic children and their families in Alexandria.

The aim of this work was to study self-management behavior (SMB) of asthmatic children and their parents, its cognitive predictors as well as its effect on the child stress and health care utilization. Data was collected by interviewing 500 asthmatic children aged 9-18 years and 500 of their parents. The study revealed that very low percentage of the respondents had good asthma management behavior. The most frequent behaviors were taking medication, going to doctor and avoiding asthma triggers. The least practiced behaviors were breathing exercises and bronchial hygiene practices. The main pre…

Assessment of the accuracy and role of self-recorded blood pressures in the management of hypertension.

Self-recording of the blood pressure by patients away from hospital or office ("home blood pressure") has been advocated as providing a better estimate of "true" blood pressure. The reliability of home blood-pressure recording has been assessed only by standard indirect methods which themselves are subject to considerable error and variability. The accuracy of self-recorded blood pressures was therefore assessed in 57 patients with essential hypertension by comparison with simultaneous measurements of clinic blood pressures and with intra-arterial blood pressures recorded at home and at hospit

Social network characteristics, self-management behavior, and the mediating role of self-efficacy among diabetes patients: a multicenter cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUD: Social isolation (structural social network deficit) is closely linked to poor health outcomes in patients with diabetes. Existing studies often focus on broad isolation or single-dimensional factors, lacking targeted exploration in the Chinese population. OBJECTIVES: To explore the associations between social network characteristics and self-management behavior in patients with diabetes, and assess the mediating role of self-efficacy in this association. METHODS: A multi-center cross-sectional study was used to recruit 2, 358 patients with diabetes. The assessments included socia…

Gender differences in self-efficacy and self-management behaviors among adults with type 2 diabetes: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

A systematic meta-analysis was conducted to examine gender differences in self-efficacy and self-management among adults with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). Twenty studies (2000-2025) with gender-disaggregated data were analyzed according to PRISMA 2020 guidelines. The meta-analysis used standardized mean differences (Hedges' g; men minus women) and a multilevel random-effects model, with moderator and sensitivity analyses for behavioral domains, measurement types, regions, and study quality. The pooled effect size was small and positive (g = 0.37, 95% CI: -0.11 to 0.85), but the confidence …

Association between self-efficacy and self-management behaviours among individuals at high risk for stroke: Social support acting as a mediator.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To explore the association between self-efficacy and self-management by modelling three types of social support as mediators among stroke high-risk populations. BACKGROUND: Self-efficacy and social support (i.e. objective support, subjective support and support utilisation) are important for self-management among stroke high-risk populations. Self-efficacy activates three types of social support, and the effect of social support on self-management varies by types among chronic patients. Therefore, social support may act as a mediator between self-efficacy and self-managem…

Advances in the management of allergic rhinitis: clinical relevance of the mometasone furoate-olopatadine association and the challenge of patient self-diagnosis and self-treatment.

Allergic rhinitis is a highly prevalent inflammatory disease that significantly impairs sleep, daily functioning and quality of life, with symptoms increasingly amplified by environmental changes such as prolonged pollen seasons and urban pollution. Despite effective therapies, many patients remain poorly controlled due to delayed diagnosis, inappropriate self-selection of over-the-counter medications, limited adherence and incorrect intranasal technique. The fixed-dose intranasal combination of mometasone furoate and olopatadine addresses these gaps by uniting rapid antihistaminic, mast-cell
