Progress on the scaling up of HIV testing in South Africa through varied distribution models using the oral HIV self-test kit.

Self-Testing for HIV (HIVST) was approved as additional testing modality by the WHO in December 2016. The South African National Department of Health has adopted these guidelines and has sanctioned the assessment of various testing modalities to scale up HIV testing in response to the UNAIDS 90-90-90 targets. HIV self-tests are targeted at reaching infrequent, under-tested and high-risk populations. Herewith, we present the progress to date on the testing of various models of distribution through public and private sector initiatives. The oral test, called OraQuick HIV1/2, was the first test t

Re-reading of OraQuick HIV-1/2 rapid antibody test results: quality assurance implications for HIV self-testing programmes.

INTRODUCTION: Scale-up of HIV self-testing (HIVST) will play a key role in meeting the United Nation's 90-90-90 targets. Delayed re-reading of used HIVST devices has been used by early implementation studies to validate the performance of self-test kits and to estimate HIV positivity among self-testers. We investigated the stability of results on used devices under controlled conditions to assess its potential as a quality assurance approach for HIVST scale-up. METHODS: 444 OraQuick® HIV-1/2 rapid antibody tests were conducted using commercial plasma from two HIV-positive donors and HIV-negat

A comparison between lactose breath test and quick test on duodenal biopsies for diagnosing lactase deficiency in patients with self-reported lactose intolerance.

BACKGROUND: A lactose breath test (LBT) is usually used to diagnose lactase deficiency, and a lactose quick test (LQT) has been proposed as a new test on duodenal biopsies to detect this disorder. GOALS: We aimed to assess the diagnostic accuracy of LBT and LQT and their ability to predict the clinical response to a lactose-free diet in patients with self-reported lactose intolerance. STUDY: Fifty-five patients (age 47 ± 14 y; M/F 15/36) underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and 25g-LBT. Two duodenal biopsies were taken to determine lactase deficiency (normal, mild, or severe) by LQT an

Investigating the dynamic coevolution of coping self-efficacy and posttraumatic stress symptoms after hurricane florence: An empirical test of self-regulation shift theory.

Self-regulation shift theory (SRST) provides a nonlinear dynamical systems-based theory of posttraumatic psychological adaptation. SRST has two central tenets: (1) coping self-efficacy and posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) dynamically coevolve, such that changes in one correspond with changes in the other, and (2) that this coevolution produces critical transitions in psychological state for a subset of trauma survivors, including a self-determination violation (a decrease in coping self-efficacy paired with a rapid increase in PTSS) and/or a self-determination resurgence (an increase in co

"I felt special!": a qualitative study of peer-delivered HIV self-tests, STI self-sampling kits and PrEP for transgender women in Uganda.

INTRODUCTION: Peer delivery is a client-centred approach that could maximize the coverage and impact of HIV services for transgender women (TGW). We conducted qualitative interviews to examine how peer-delivered HIV self-testing (HIVST), sexually transmitted infection self-sampling (STISS) and oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) influenced prevention choices among TGW and their intimate partners in Uganda. METHODS: Within a cluster randomized trial of peer-delivered HIVST, STISS and PrEP among HIV-negative TGW (NCT04328025), we conducted 55 qualitative interviews with 30 TGW, 15 intimate par

Modifying quantitative sensory testing to investigate tactile sensory function and behavioral reactivity in children with intellectual and developmental disabilities: establishing feasibility and testing sex, autism, and self-injury effects.

BACKGROUND: Sensory reactivity differences are common across neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), however very few studies specifically examine tactile or pain responses in children with NNDs, especially those with communication challenges. The current study aimed to (a) replicate the feasibility of a modified quantitative sensory test (mQST) with a sample of children with NDDs, (b) assess validity evidence based on behavioral reactivity during mQST application and the corresponding behavioral measurement coding system, and (c) explore group differences in behavioral reactivity to mQST stimuli

After the program ends: HIV testing behavior among men who have sex when men after the conclusion of a program providing regular home delivery of HIV self-testing kits.

Testing for HIV continues to play a key role in prevention, especially among at-risk populations such as gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM). Incorporating HIV self-testing (HIVST) into testing programs encourages more frequent screening and likely facilitates earlier diagnosis, but little is known about how testing behavior changes after self-testing programs end. In this study, a subset of MSM in the eTest trial who were randomized to receive regular HIVST or clinic testing every three months for 12 months were followed for an additional 12 months. We compared testing ra

HIV Testing Among Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex with Men During the COVID-19 Pandemic in China: Implications for Promoting HIV Self-Testing Among Key Populations.

The COVID-19 pandemic has created additional barriers to accessing sexual health services among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) in China. Yet, little is known about the frequency of HIV testing and how GBMSM get tested during the pandemic. We surveyed an online sample of GBMSM recruited on a gay networking app in China. Among 956 sexually active, 70.1% had received an HIV test in the past 6 months. Among these, 61.0% reported having undergone HIV self-testing (HIVST). Young GBMSM aged 18-24 years old were more likely to receive a recent HIV test, and the number of se

Evaluating an Innovative HIV Self-Testing Service With Web-Based, Real-Time Counseling Provided by an Artificial Intelligence Chatbot (HIVST-Chatbot) in Increasing HIV Self-Testing Use Among Chinese Men Who Have Sex With Men: Protocol for a Noninferiority Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Counseling support for HIV self-testing (HIVST) users is essential to ensure support and linkage to care among men who have sex with men (MSM). An HIVST service with web-based real-time instruction, pretest, and posttest counseling provided by trained administrators (HIVST-OIC) was developed by previous projects. Although the HIVST-OIC was highly effective in increasing HIVST uptake and the proportion of HIVST users receiving counseling along with testing, it required intensive resources to implement and sustain. The service capacity of HIVST-OIC cannot meet the increasing demands
