Discomfort intolerance: Development of a construct and measure relevant to panic disorder.

The construct of discomfort intolerance (proposed as an individual difference in the ability to tolerate uncomfortable sensations) is introduced and psychometric properties of a measure of this trait are provided. The Discomfort Intolerance Scale (DIS), a self-report measure of discomfort intolerance, was evaluated using a variety of samples (total N approximately 1700), including patients with panic disorder, clinical controls, and nonclinical community members. Factor analyses suggest the DIS contains two factors, including a factor indexing the ability to tolerate discomfort and pain (Facto

Relationship of cognitions to fear of somatic symptoms: a test of the cognitive theory of panic.

The relationship between fear of physical anxiety symptoms and cognitive misinterpretation of those symptoms, as measured by responses to the Body Sensations Questionnaire and the Agoraphobic Cognitions Questionnaire, respectively, was examined for two samples of outpatients with panic disorder. Factor analytic and correlational analyses demonstrated that the patients' self-rated fear of specific physical and psychological symptoms was related to the frequency of specific logically related catastrophic thoughts (e.g., fears of heart palpitations or chest pressure with thoughts of a heart attac

[Neurological symptoms in a-beta-lipoproteinemia (author's transl)].

Abetalipoproteinaemia (Bassen-Kornzweig syndrome), an autosomal recessive inherited disease, up to now has been described in 53 instances in the world literature. Neurological symptoms were reported in 34 of them. Ataxia, loss of proprioceptive sensation, and areflexia characterize this disorder, resembling Friedreich's ataxia. Other signs, which may be inconstantly found, are weakness, diminution of cutaneous sensation, and in the later course an atypical retinitis pigmentosa. Laboratory examinations show acanthocytosis, lowered concentrations of serum cholesterol, triglycerides and phospholi

Concussion, sensation-seeking and substance use among US adolescents.

No large-scale epidemiological survey of adolescents in the US has assessed the association between lifetime history of concussion, propensity toward sensation-seeking, and recent substance use. Methods: This study assesses the association between lifetime history of diagnosed concussions, sensation-seeking, and recent substance use (i.e., cigarette use, binge drinking, marijuana use, illicit drug use, and nonmedical prescription drug use) using the 2016 and 2017 Monitoring the Future study of 25,408 8th, 10th, and 12th graders. Results: Lifetime diagnosis of concussion was associated with gre

Idiopathic trigeminal sensory neuropathy. A case report.

Idiopathic trigeminal sensory neuropathy is a rare clinical condition characterized by sensory disturbances on the face. Its symptoms may be permanent or temporary and a wide variety of diagnostic procedures is usually required to establish the diagnosis. Frequently, it is the first manifestation of a systemic disorder. In the majority of cases causal treatment is not possible, even though patients with trigeminal sensory neuropathy should be carefully monitored by physicians.

Exploring the prevalence and phenomenology of repetitive behaviours and abnormal sensory processing in children with Williams Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: A small amount of research with individuals who have Williams Syndrome (WS) suggests that children with the condition may be vulnerable to sensory processing abnormalities and present with repetitive and restricted behaviours. METHODS: Parents of 21 children with WS aged 6-15 years completed a semi-structured interview designed to elicit the form, frequency, impact and developmental course of a range of sensory processing abnormalities and repetitive behaviours. RESULTS: Findings indicate that sensory processing difficulties are predominantly characterised by hypersensitivities,

[Ocular proprioception and developmental dyslexia. Sixty clinical observations].

PURPOSE: The objective of this study is to assess proprioception anomalies in postural deficiency syndrome in a group of children suffering from reading impairment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixty male patients with an average age of 11 years and 9 months were included in the study. Initially, they were given a standardized neuropsychological examination, which confirmed the diagnosis of reading impairment. Then after filling out a questionnaire seeking a proprioceptive anomaly, the patients were subjected to a clinical ocular and postural examination consisting of nine precisely described steps.

Intramodal somaesthetic recognition disorders following right and left hemisphere damage.

A dissociation between apperceptive and associative processing after right and left hemisphere damage, respectively, has been suggested for visual, auditory and visuo-tactile matching tasks. This study was aimed at testing for this dissociation in a purely somaesthetic task. Forty consecutive patients with recent right and left hemispheric vascular lesions and 10 normal controls were studied. The groups were compared on two intramodal somaesthetic matching tasks, consisting of either meaningless shapes (apperceptive recognition) or meaningful objects (associative recognition). In normal contro

Sense of taste in patients after cochlear implantation-preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: Taste is the leading sense in how we determine the quality of consumed food. Proper gustatory sensation largely determines the well-being and health of an organism, and this affects their quality of life. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to estimate the risk of early taste disorders following implantation surgery. METHODS: Twenty patients underwent a taste test before, 1 day after, and 1 month after cochlear implantation. The taste sensations of sweet, sour, salty, and bitter were determined. RESULTS: Statistical analysis showed no significant differences (p > 0.05)

The premonitory urge to tic: measurement, characteristics, and correlates in older adolescents and adults.

In addition to motor and/or vocal tics, many individuals with Tourette syndrome (TS) or chronic tic disorder (CTD) report frequent, uncomfortable sensory phenomena that immediately precede the tics. To date, examination of these premonitory sensations or urges has been limited by inconsistent assessment tools. In this paper, we examine the psychometric properties of a nine-item self-report measure, the Premonitory Urge to Tic Scale (PUTS) and examine the characteristics and correlates of the premonitory urge to tic in a clinical sample of 122 older adolescents and adults with TS or CTD. Mindfulness and Eating Disorders: A Network Analysis.

Higher trait mindfulness may be protective against eating disorder (ED) pathology. However, little is understood about which specific mindfulness processes connect to specific ED symptoms. This study (N = 1,056 undergraduates) used network analysis at the symptom/process level to identify: (1) central nodes, or symptoms/processes with the greatest collective connection with all other symptoms/processes; and (2) bridge nodes, or symptoms/processes driving interconnection between mindfulness processes and ED symptoms. We conducted analyses both with and without food- and body-related mindfulness

Understanding cutaneous sensory syndromes: diagnostic challenges and treatment implications.

Cutaneous sensory syndromes (CSS) comprise a heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by symptoms of itch, burning, pain or other dysaesthesias on normal or minimally altered skin. They share convergent biology that includes aberrant small-fibre input, spinal and supraspinal sensitization and neuroimmune crosstalk that perpetuates the itch-scratch cycle. This narrative review synthesizes current concepts and practical management across seven types of CSS encountered in adult practice: scalp dysaesthesia, vulvodynia, scrotodynia, brachioradial pruritus, notalgia paraesthetica, burning mou

What's with the Lump in the Throat? Globus, Dysphagia, and the Role of the Upper Esophageal Sphincter in Laryngopharyngeal Reflux Disease.

Globus is a feeling of a lump or fullness in the throat. It can be a symptom of reflux or a distinct functional disorder. Dysphagia is the sensation that food is hindered in passing from the mouth to the stomach. There are connections between gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and dysphagia. Laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPR) is likely a subset of GERD patients with specific alterations in upper esophageal sphincter (UES) reflexes that reduce esophageal refluxate clearance and increase the likelihood that refluxate will penetrate the UES barrier. In return, augmentation of the UES barr

Perinatal factors associated with sensory processing difficulties in infancy: Findings from the Etude Longitudinale Francaise depuis l'Enfance (ELFE) French national birth cohort.

BACKGROUND: Sensory processing involves the nervous system receiving, modulating, and responding to sensory stimuli. Clinical samples have elevated rates of sensory processing difficulties, less is known about sensory processing at population-level. We aimed to investigate patterns of sensory processing in infancy and their association with perinatal factors. METHODS: Data from a French prospective birth cohort of 9861 babies were used to identify latent sensory classes of 1-year-olds. Multinomial logistic regression examined whether sex, cumulative sociodemographic risk or perinatal factors,

[A case of ataxic gait disturbance due to 1-bromopropane neurotoxicity].

A 55-year-old man presented a slowly progressive sensory disorder, predominantly in both lower limbs, and gait disturbance. Neurological examinations revealed abnormal sensation and spasticity in both lower limbs, and a wide-based gait. Although examination revealed mild hyperchloremia and decreased motor conduction velocity in the peroneal nerve, head and whole spine MRI, and spinal fluid examination were normal. His job history revealed he had been engaged in metal cleaning work using 1-bromopropane (1-BP) for three years. His serum bromide concentration was increased to 175.6 mg/l (standard

Progressive multifocal fibrosing neuropathy: description of a novel disease.

Entrapment peripheral neuropathies are clinically characterized by sensory impairment and motor deficits. They are usually caused by mechanical injuries, but they are also a frequent manifestation of metabolic diseases, toxic agent exposure, or systemic fibrotic disorders. Here we describe the clinical, radiological, and histopathological features of a novel progressive fibrotic disorder characterized by progressive multifocal fibrosing neuropathy. We identified two patients who presented with severe and progressive peripheral neuropathic symptoms sequentially affecting multiple sites. These p
