Relation between sensory disturbance and outcome after retrogasserian glycerol rhizotomy.

The relation between postoperative sensory deterioration and surgical outcome in 54 patients treated by retrogasserian glycerol rhizotomy for trigeminal neuralgia was studied. The facial sensibility was assessed one day and three months postoperatively. Thresholds for perception and pain were determined quantitatively using transcutaneous electrical stimulation and clinically by light touch and pinprick tests. At a follow-up one year after surgery there was no significant difference in pain relief between patients who did show and patients who did not show sensory deterioration at the one day

Quantitative Sensory Changes Following Gasserian Ganglion Radiofrequency Thermocoagulation in Patients with Medical Refractory Trigeminal Neuralgia: A Prospective Consecutive Case Series.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Microsurgical vascular nerve decompression and percutaneous ablative interventions aiming at the Gasserian ganglion are promising treatment modalities for patients with medical refractory trigeminal neuralgia (TN). Apart from clinical reports on a variable manifestation of facial hypoesthesia, the long-term impact of trigeminal ganglion radiofrequency thermocoagulation (RFT) on sensory characteristics has not yet been determined using quantitative methods. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed standardized quantitative sensory testing according to the established protoc

Subclinical pretreatment sensory deficits appear to predict the development of pain and numbness in patients with multiple myeloma undergoing chemotherapy.

PURPOSE: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy is a major complication in the treatment for cancer, including multiple myeloma (MM). Patients may develop painful and non-painful (e.g., numbness) neuropathy symptoms that impair function and often persist after therapy is terminated. This study tested the hypothesis that baseline subclinical neuropathy, as assessed by sensory thresholds, is related to the development of neuropathy symptoms (e.g., pain and numbness) in patients with MM undergoing treatment with chemotherapy. METHODS: Patients (n = 56) who had undergone two or fewer cycles o…

Combined testing of autonomic and sensory dysfunction in patients with unilateral facial flushing and sweating during exercise.

AIMS OF THE STUDY: Patients with unilateral facial flushing are occasionally referred to clinical neurophysiological evaluation with the question of the site of lesion. These patients may have a mixture of autonomic and sensory symptoms. We wanted to study to which extent a combined autonomic and sensory clinical neurophysiological testing before and after exercise may help in the diagnostic evaluation of the patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Five patients were investigated at rest with quantitative sensory thresholds (QST, measurement of thermal thresholds) and quantitative sudomotor axon refl…

Pitch discrimination in cerebellar patients: evidence for a sensory deficit.

In the last two decades, a growing body of research showing cerebellar involvement in an increasing number of nonmotor tasks and systems has prompted an expansion of speculations concerning the function of the cerebellum. Here, we tested the predictions of a hypothesis positing cerebellar involvement in sensory data acquisition. Specifically, we examined the effect of global cerebellar degeneration on primary auditory sensory function by means of a pitch discrimination task. The just noticeable difference in pitch between two tones was measured in 15 healthy controls and in 15 high functioning

Hypoesthesia occurs in acute whiplash irrespective of pain and disability levels and the presence of sensory hypersensitivity.

OBJECTIVES: In contrast to the increasing knowledge of the sensory dysfunction involved in chronic whiplash associated disorders, the use of comprehensive quantitative sensory testing in the acute stage of the condition is sparse. In this study, we sought to investigate the presence of sensory hypoesthesia in participants with acute whiplash injury. METHODS: Fifty-two volunteers within 4 weeks after a motor vehicle accident and 31 healthy asymptomatic volunteers were recruited for this study. We classified our cohort into either a "high-risk" (n=17; signs associated with poor recovery includi

Sound-induced priming of the chinchilla auditory system.

Exposure of the auditory system to either continuous or interrupted nontraumatic noises, often collectively referred to as priming exposures, has been shown, in a number of experimental paradigms, to reduce the susceptibility of the auditory system to noise-induced hearing and sensory cell loss from a subsequent traumatic exposure. Using auditory evoked potentials to obtain pure-tone thresholds and cochleograms to quantify sensory cell losses, the issue of priming-induced protective effects was examined in the chinchilla. Priming was accomplished with either a continuous noise or with a contin

Novel procedure for generating continuous flash suppression: Seurat meets Mondrian.

Continuous flash suppression (CFS) entails presentation of a stationary target to one eye and an animated sequence of arrays of geometric figures, the mask, to the other eye. The prototypical CFS sequence comprises different sized rectangles of various colors, dubbed Mondrians. Presented as a rapid, changing sequence to one eye, Mondrians or other similarly constructed textured arrays can abolish awareness of the target viewed by the other eye for many seconds at a time, producing target suppression durations much longer than those associated with conventional binocular rivalry. We have devise

Directional acuity of whole-body perturbations during standing balance.

The ability to perceive the direction of whole-body motion during standing may be critical to maintaining balance and preventing a fall. Our first goal was to quantify kinesthetic perception of whole-body motion by estimating directional acuity thresholds of support-surface perturbations during standing. The directional acuity threshold to lateral deviations in backward support-surface motion in healthy, young adults was quantified as 9.5±2.4° using the psychometric method (n=25 subjects). However, inherent limitations in the psychometric method, such as a large number of required trials and t

Defocus blur discrimination in natural images with natural optics.

The lens system in the human eye is able to best focus light from only one distance at a time. Therefore, many objects in the natural environment are not imaged sharply on the retina. Furthermore, light from objects in the environment is subject to the particular aberrations of the observer's lens system (e.g., astigmatism and chromatic aberration). We refer to blur created by the observer's optics as "natural" or "defocus" blur as opposed to "on-screen" blur created by software on a display screen. Although blur discrimination has been studied extensively, human ability to discriminate defocus
