Hoof Impact and Foot-Off Accelerations in Galloping Thoroughbred Racehorses Trialling Eight Shoe-Surface Combinations.

The athletic performance and safety of racehorses is influenced by hoof−surface interactions. This intervention study assessed the effect of eight horseshoe−surface combinations on hoof acceleration patterns at impact and foot-off in 13 galloping Thoroughbred racehorses retired from racing. Aluminium, barefoot, GluShu (aluminium−rubber composite) and steel shoeing conditions were trialled on turf and artificial (Martin Collins Activ-Track) surfaces. Shod conditions were applied across all four hooves. Tri-axial accelerometers (SlamStickX, range ±500 g, sampling rate 5000 Hz) were attached to t

Jockey Perception of Shoe and Surface Effects on Hoof-Ground Interactions and Implications for Safety in the Galloping Thoroughbred Racehorse.

Riding racehorses is a high-risk profession and optimizing safety alongside performance is paramount. Horseshoes play a critical role in providing traction with the ground surface and are therefore a major determinant of safety. However, the subjective perceptions of expert riders influence attitudes towards using different shoes and must be taken into consideration before any changes may be implemented. This study used a questionnaire-based method to evaluate jockey opinion of four shoeing conditions (aluminum, steel, GluShu, and barefoot) trialed at gallop over turf and artificial surfaces. …

Identifying predictors for postoperative clinical outcome in lumbar spinal stenosis patients using smart-shoe technology.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 33% of the patients with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) who undergo surgery are not satisfied with their postoperative clinical outcomes. Therefore, identifying predictors for postoperative outcome and groups of patients who will benefit from the surgical intervention is of significant clinical benefit. However, many of the studied predictors to date suffer from subjective recall bias, lack fine digital measures, and yield poor correlation to outcomes. METHODS: This study utilized smart-shoes to capture gait parameters extracted preoperatively during a 10 m self-paced …

[Changes in risk factors for spontaneous abortion in an area with high concentrations of shoe manufacture after a preventive intervention].

Risk factors of spontaneous abortion were investigated in two matched case-control studies in 1987-88 and 1997-99. An history of previous abortions significantly increased the risk in both studies. Lifestyle (coffee) and occupational (exposure to organic solvents) factors were associated with a significantly increased risk in the first but not in the second calendar period, following a community intervention with advice given to workers, employers, and physicians; the latter also counseled a greater use of medicines against spontaneous abortion.

Walk a mile in my shoes: perspectives towards sharing of health and experience data among individuals living with sickle cell disorder.

BACKGROUND: Advancements in digital health technologies (DHTs) mean people are increasingly recording and managing personal health data. As observed during the COVID-19 pandemic, sharing of such data may provide unrivalled opportunities in advancing our understanding of conditions otherwise poorly understood, including rare conditions. METHODS: A semi-structured focus group (n=25) explored perspectives and experiences of sharing health data among those with a group of rare haematological conditions, sickle cell disorder (SCD). The focus group explored (I) what 'feeling well' looks like; (II)

Weathering alters the profile of trace metals and organic compounds in leachates and bioavailability extracts from microplastics of trail running shoes.

Microplastics (MPs) from rubber outsoles of trail running shoes may contribute significantly to contamination in protected areas. In the natural environment, weathering processes can damage MP molecular structure and alter the mobility of inorganic and organic compounds used as additives in rubber. In this study, we characterised changes in the surface morphology, functional groups, and thermal stability of MPs weathered on and below the soil surface over 12 weeks, and analysed inorganic and organic additives in leachates (0.01M CaCl2) and bioaccessibility extracts (ethyl acetate). Weathering …

Variability in inter-segmental coordination of the lower limb in older adults during walking: An analysis with toe-only rocker sole shoes.

Older adults have age-related problems in motor performance during walking. Toe-only rocker sole shoes are one of the most common shoe modifications, facilitating forward movement and, thus, affecting mobility and stability. Due to the importance of studying inter-segmental coordination and the lack of investigation of the effect of such shoes in the literature, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of these shoes in older adults. Twenty-four participants walked on a treadmill under two conditions: standard shoes and toe-only rocker sole shoes with 20° rocker angle. The continuous and mean a…

The impact of shoes versus ankle-restricted orthoses on sit-to-stand kinematics and centre of mass trajectories in adults with myelomeningocele.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with myelomeningocele (MMC) present with neurological and orthopaedic deficiencies, requiring orthoses during walking. Orthoses for counteracting dorsiflexion may restrict activities such as rising from a chair. RESEARCH QUESTION: How are sit-to-stand (STS) movements performed with ankle joint-restricted ankle-foot orthoses (AFO) and knee-ankle-foot orthoses with a free-articulated knee joint (KAFO-F)? METHODS: Twenty-eight adults with MMC, mean age 25.5 years (standard deviation: 3.5 years), were divided into an AnkleFree group (no orthosis or a foot orthosis) and an

Influence of altered torsional stiffness through sole modification of air pressure shoes on lower extremity biomechanical behaviour during side-step cutting maneuvers.

Directional changes in cutting maneuvers are critical in sports, where shoe torsional stiffness (STS) is an important factor. Shoes are designed based on different constructions and movement patterns. Hence, it is unclear how adjustable spacers into the sole constructions of air pressure chambers (APC) affect the STS in side-step cutting. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of altered STS through adjustable sole spacers on ground reaction force (GRF) and ankle and knee joint moments in side-step cutting. Seventeen healthy recreational athletes performed side-step cutting with experi…

Estimating Indicators for Assessing Knee Motion Impairment During Gait Using In-Shoe Motion Sensors: A Feasibility Study.

Knee joint function deterioration significantly impacts quality of life. This study developed estimation models for ten knee indicators using data from in-shoe motion sensors to assess knee movement during everyday activities. Sixty-six healthy young participants were involved, and multivariate linear regression was employed to construct the models. The results showed that eight out of ten models achieved a "fair" to "good" agreement based on intra-class correlation coefficients (ICCs), with three knee joint angle indicators reaching the "fair" agreement. One temporal indicator model displayed
