Ischemic postconditioning ameliorates diabetic cerebral ischemia via activating the brain-derived neurotrophic factor-tropomyosin receptor kinase B-hypoxia-inducible factor 1α-Bcl-2/adenovirus E1B 19-kDa-interacting protein 3 pathway to induce microglial mitophagy and suppress A1 astrocyte-mediated neuroinflammation.

AIM: Diabetes mellitus exacerbates cerebral ischemic injury. However, effective interventions remain limited. Ischemic postconditioning (IPOC) is a potential neuroprotective strategy; however, its efficacy and mechanisms in diabetes remain poorly understood. This study aimed to explore the therapeutic effects and underlying mechanisms of IPOC in diabetes complicated by cerebral ischemia. METHODS: Tree shrews with diabetes complicated by cerebral ischemia were used as the study subjects and were subjected to a standardized IPOC intervention protocol. RESULTS: The results showed that compared

Evidence on the prevalence of emerging and re-emerging tick- and flea-borne rickettsial agents in acute encephalitis syndrome endemic areas of northeast Uttar Pradesh, India.

Outbreaks of acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) with unknown aetiology are reported every year in Gorakhpur district, Uttar Pradesh, India, and Orientia tsutsugamushi, the rickettsial pathogen, responsible for scrub typhus has been attributed as the primary cause of AES problem. However, information on the prevalence of other rickettsial infections is lacking. Hence, this study was carried out to assess any occurrence of tick- and flea-borne rickettsial agents in villages reporting AES cases in this district. In total, 825 peridomestic small mammals were trapped, by setting 9254 Sherman traps i

Genome Evolution and the Enigmatic Axial Skeleton of the Hero Shew (Soricidae: Scutisorex Somereni).

Linking genetic variation with traits of interest has been a longstanding challenge for evolutionary biologists. Here, we explore elements of genome evolution in the hero shrew (Soricidae: Scutisorex somereni): a small, elusive mammal with the most distinctive vertebral column in the entire tree of life. We first assembled and annotated a draft genome from short-read, long-read, and chromosome-conformation-capture sequencing for S. somereni. We combined this genome with publicly available genomes from 30 other mammal species spanning millions of years of evolutionary history to search for gene

Exposure of non-target small mammals to anticoagulant rodenticide during chemical rodent control operations.

The extensive use of anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) results in widespread unintentional exposure of non-target rodents and secondary poisoning of predators despite regulatory measures to manage and reduce exposure risk. To elucidate on the potential vectoring of ARs into surrounding habitats by non-target small mammals, we determined bromadiolone prevalence and concentrations in rodents and shrews near bait boxes during an experimental application of the poison for 2 weeks. Overall, bromadiolone was detected in 12.6% of all small rodents and insectivores. Less than 20 m from bait boxes, 48.6

Oculocutaneous albinism in Suncus murinus: establishment of a strain and identification of its responsible gene.

The house musk shrew Suncus murinus (Insectivora, Soricidae) is referred to as suncus in a laboratory context. Although the capture of albino-like shrews (wild suncus) has been reported previously, albino-like strains have never been established, and the molecular basis of the character has remained elusive. We have established an OCAO mutant strain (oculocutaneous albinism Okinawa), from a wild suncus with a white coat and red eyes, which was captured in 2002. During the course of establishing the strain, it was revealed that the albino-like phenotype was inherited in an autosomal recessive m

A deep learning-based system for automatic detection of emesis with high accuracy in Suncus murinus.

Quantifying emesis in Suncus murinus (S. murinus) has traditionally relied on direct observation or reviewing recorded behaviour, which are laborious, time-consuming processes that are susceptible to operator error. With rapid advancements in deep learning, automated animal behaviour quantification tools with high accuracy have emerged. In this study, we pioneere the use of both three-dimensional convolutional neural networks and self-attention mechanisms to develop the Automatic Emesis Detection (AED) tool for the quantification of emesis in S. murinus, achieving an overall accuracy of 98.92%

Comparison of antihemorrhagic activities in skeletal muscle extracts from various animals against Bothrops jararaca snake venom.

Antihemorrhagic activities of skeletal muscle extracts from various animals were compared in inhibiting the hemorrhagic activity of Bothrops jararaca venom. The muscle extracts of the European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) exhibited the strongest activity, followed by those of other insectivores such as the shrew (Crocidura russula) and mole (Talpa europaea). The antihemorrhagic activities of muscle extracts from experimental animals such as mice, rats, guinea-pigs, hamsters and rabbits were negligible.

Molecular epidemiological investigations of plague in Eastern Province of Zambia.

BACKGROUND: Plague is a flea-borne zoonotic and invasive disease caused by a gram negative coccobacillus bacterium called Yersinia pestis. Plague has caused three devastating pandemics globally namely: the Justinian, Black Death and Oriental plague. The disease in the Eastern Province of Zambia has been reported in Nyimba and Sinda Districts in the past 15 years. The aim of this study was to investigate the molecular epidemiology of plague in the two affected districts. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), targeting Plasminogen activator gene (pla gene) of Y. pestis, was performed on suspected hum

Genotoxic assessment of small mammals at an illegal dumpsite at the Aomori-Iwate prefectural boundary.

In 2003, we examined the chromosomes of grass voles at an illegal dumpsite at the Aomori-lwate prefectural boundary. In subsequent years, from 2003-2006, we surveyed the chromosomes of four species of small mammals, namely, the Japanese grass vole (Microtus montebelli), the large Japanese field mouse (Apodemus speciosus), the small Japanese field mouse (A. argenteus), and the greater Japanese shrew mole (Urotrichus talpoides). Each annual survey revealed, both on a yearly basis and during the entire period in question, that the frequencies of breaks and gaps in chromosomes of M. montebelli wer

[Resurgence of the plague in the Ikongo district of Madagascar in 1998. 2. Reservoirs and vectors implicated].

Our survey of mammals and fleas arose as a result of an outbreak of bubonic plague at an usually low altitude in the Ikongo district (Madagascar), while a previous study had found anti-F1 antibodies in an endemic hedgehog. Animals were sampled with live traps in two hamlets (Antanambao-Vohidrotra, 540 m alt. and Ambalagoavy, 265 m alt.) and with pitfall traps in a neighbouring forest (750 m alt.). Rat fleas were collected by brushing the fur and free-living fleas by use of light traps. The introduced shrew Suncus murinus was found only in the village of Ambalagoavy while the black rat (Rattus

The Healthy Heart: Lessons from Nature's Elite Athletes.

The incidence of cardiovascular disease in humans is more than three times that of many wild and domestic mammals despite nearly identical heart morphologies and responses to exercise. A survey of mammalian species from 0.002-kg shrews to 43,000-kg whales shows that the human heart is more dog-like than cat-like and that neither body size nor longevity accounts for the relative vulnerability to cardiovascular disease. Rather, a major difference is daily activity patterns, which may underlie the comparatively healthy hearts of wild mammals.

[Plague in the port of Mahajanga: 6 inhabitants out of 1000 carry the anti-F1 antibody in 1999].

The authors report the results of a randomized epidemiological survey aiming to assess the sero-prevalence of plague in the general population > or = 2-year-old in Mahajanga. In 656 sera tested (by ELISA), the prevalence of anti-F1 antibodies was found to be 6.1%@1000 inhabitants, close to the expected prevalence in the area, where plague reappeared in 1991 after 62 years of absence. The study also demonstrated that the shrew, Suncus murinus, is an important reservoir in the plague transmission in Mahajanga.

Surveillance for Asiatic filoviruses and zoonotic paramyxoviruses at a perceived wildlife-human interface.

Emerging zoonotic viruses pose a global health threat. In Thailand, evaluating human-wildlife interfaces is critical for identifying potential zoonotic virus spillover, particularly in areas with high-risk contact with roosting bats. We conducted cross-sectional sampling of humans (n = 234) and bats (n = 272) at a cave site in central Thailand where guano farmers, national park workers, and cave visitors may be exposed to bat-borne viruses. Molecular and multiplex serologic methods were used to identify current and previous infections with zoonotic paramyxoviruses and filoviruses, while multiv

Deer tick virus genotypes are perpetuated by different modes of transmission.

Deer tick virus (DTV), or lineage II Powassan virus, is an emergent tick-borne encephalitis virus in North America. Survivors frequently sustain neurologic sequelae. Nationally reported cases have been increasing. DTV is thought to be maintained in nature by multiple modes including horizontal transmission (from viremic host to tick), cofeeding transmission (between ticks feeding nearby) and by transovarial transmission (female to progeny). Analysis of the relative importance of each mode has been hindered by low enzootic transmission. In 2021, Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts experienced an e

Application of real-time PCR for the identification of the endangered species Galemys pyrenaicus through faecal samples.

BACKGROUND: Currently, many micromammals are important targets for study. The endangered Galemys pyrenaicus is an outstanding example. Globally, their populations have suffered a substantial decline in last 20 years. In the surveyed area, the capture of desman is legally forbidden due to the high conservation concerns. Reason by non-invasive sampling through faeces is proposed for its monitoring. Furthermore, the confusion between faeces from desman and Mediterranean water shrews must be considered. Thus, the aim of this study was focused on developing RT-PCR assays to determine the presence o
