Clinical evaluation of the depigmenting effect of Glechoma Hederacea extract by topical treatment for 8 weeks on UV-induced pigmentation in Asian skin.

UV is a major environmental factor inducing and worsening the symptoms of hyperpigmentation disorders such as freckles, melasma and solar lentigines. During UV-induced skin inflammatory reactions, pro-inflammatory mediators initiate the production of various paracrine melanogenic factors (α-MSH, SCF, ET-1, bFGF and NO) in keratinocytes. These paracrine factors activate melanin synthase in melanocytes through the paracrine network between melanocytes and keratinocytes. Glechoma hederacea (GH) is a herbal plant used in oriental medicine to treat inflammation. Its anti-inflammatory effects, throu

Automatic identification of benign pigmented skin lesions from clinical images using deep convolutional neural network.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to develop a computer-aided detection (CAD) system for accurate identification of benign pigmented skin lesions (PSLs) from images captured using a digital camera or a smart phone. METHODS: We collected a total of 12,836 clinical images which had been classified and location-labeled for training and validating. Four models were developed and validated; you only look once, v4 (YOLOv4), you only look once, v5 (YOLOv5), single shot multibox detector (SSD) and faster region-based convolutional neural networks (Faster R-CNN). The performance of the models was compared with thre

Performance of a computer-aided digital dermoscopic image analyzer for melanoma detection in 1,076 pigmented skin lesion biopsies.

BACKGROUND: Digital dermoscopic image analysis of pigmented skin lesions (PSLs) has become increasingly popular, despite its unclear clinical utility. Unbiased, high-powered studies investigating the efficacy of commercially available systems are limited. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the diagnostic performance of the FotoFinder Mole-Analyzer in assessing PSLs for cutaneous melanoma. METHODS: In this 15-year retrospective study, the histopathologies of 1076 biopsied PSLs among a total of 2500 imaged PSLs were collected. The biopsied PSLs were categorized as benign or malignant (cutaneous melanom

Hair Color and Skin Color Together Influence Perceptions of Age, Health, and Attractiveness in Lightly-Pigmented, Young Women.

OBJECTIVE: Research documents that even subtle changes in visible skin condition affect perceptions of age, health, and attractiveness. There is evidence that hair quality also affects the assessment of physical appearance, as variations in hair diameter, hair density, and hair style have systematic effects on perception. Here, we consider combined effects of hair color and skin color on the perception of female physical appearance. METHODS: In two experiments, we digitally manipulated facial skin color of lightly-pigmented, young women, both between-subjects (Experiment 1) and within-subject

Spectrophotometer is useful for assessing vitiligo and chemical leukoderma severity by quantifying color difference with surrounding normally pigmented skin.

BACKGROUND: Acquired skin hypopigmentation has many etiologies, including autoimmune melanocyte destruction, skin aging, inflammation, and chemical exposure. Distinguishing lesions from normally pigmented skin is clinically important to precisely assess disease severity. However, no gold standard assessment method has been reported. We aimed to investigate whether spectrophotometers are useful for assessing vitiligo and rhododendrol (4-(4-hydroxyphenol)-2-butanol) (Rhododenol® )-induced leukoderma disease severity by quantifying skin color. METHODS: Mexameter® MX18 and CM-700d spectrophotomet

In vivo near-infrared autofluorescence imaging of pigmented skin lesions: methods, technical improvements and preliminary clinical results.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSES: Fluorescence emission from in vivo cutaneous melanin was recently detected under near-infrared (NIR) excitation by our group. We then built a prototype NIR autofluorescence imaging system to observe and characterize the melanin distribution in human skin. In this article, we reported a new setup of NIR fluorescence imaging system and calibration methods to optimize the system for better clinical feasibility and clearer image. METHODS: The imaging system was designed to perform both fluorescence and reflectance imaging with a 785-nm fiber-coupled laser source. The illumina

Pre-diagnostic digital imaging prediction model to discriminate between malignant melanoma and benign pigmented skin lesion.

BACKGROUND: Malignant cutaneous melanoma is the most deadly form of skin cancer with an increasing incidence over the past decades. The final diagnosis provided is typically based on a biopsy of the skin lesion under consideration. To assist the naked-eye examination and decision on whether or not a biopsy is necessary, digital image processing techniques provide promising results. HYPOTHESIS AND AIMS: The hypothesis of this study was that a computer-aided assessment tool could assist the evaluation of a pigmented skin lesion. Hence, the overall aim was to discriminate between malignant and b

Preliminary results on the use of a noninvasive instrument for the evaluation of the depth of pigmented skin lesions: numerical simulations and experimental measurements.

The early detection of cutaneous pigmented lesions is an important aid to the clinician in recognizing malignant melanoma. In an attempt to correlate the depth of a pigmented skin lesion with its malignant potential, phantoms able to simulate the diffuse reflectance of some lesions of different thicknesses were manufactured and tested to validate a diagnostic instrument developed in-house. Such optical skin-tissue phantoms may be useful for accelerating and optimizing the diagnosis of suspicious lesions of the skin. In fact, benign melanocytic lesions are different in terms of their diffuse re

Digital dermoscopy analysis and artificial neural network for the differentiation of clinically atypical pigmented skin lesions: a retrospective study.

Noninvasive diagnostic methods such as dermoscopy or epiluminescence light microscopy have been developed in an attempt to improve diagnostic accuracy of pigmented skin lesions. The evaluation of the many morphologic characteristics of pigmented skin lesions observable by epiluminescence light microscopy, however, is often extremely complex and subjective. With the aim of obviating these problems of qualitative interpretation, methods based on mathematical analysis of pigmented skin lesions have recently been designed. These methods are based on computerized analysis of digital images obtained

Epiluminescence microscopy-based classification of pigmented skin lesions using computerized image analysis and an artificial neural network.

Epiluminescence microscopy (ELM) is a non-invasive technique for in vivo examination which can provide additional criteria for the clinical diagnosis of pigmented skin lesions (PSLs). In the present study we attempt to determine whether PSLs can be automatically diagnosed by an integrated computerized system. This system should recognize the PSL, automatically extract features and use these features in training an artificial neural network, which should--if sufficiently trained--be capable of recognizing and classifying a new PSL without human aid. One hundred and twenty images of randomly sel

Junctional and compound pigmented nevi induced by 9, 10-dimethyl-1,2-benzanthracene in skin of albino guinea pigs.

Seventy albino guinea pigs were used in the experiment to investigate the influence of 9,10-dimethyl-1,2-benzanthracene on amelanotic melanocytes. A field 5 sq cm was marked on the flank of each animal. Hairs from these fields were clipped twice a week and painted for 20 consecutive weeks with 0.3 ml of 1% 9,10-dimethyl-1,2-benzanthracene in acetone. During the 1-year observation period, pigmented sports appeared in 40 animals. Biopsies were taken under local anesthesia, and sections were prepared for light and electron microscopic observations. Melanin formation of unknown mechanism took plac

The genetic determination of skin pigmentation: KITLG and the KITLG/c-Kit pathway as key players in the onset of human familial pigmentary diseases.

Cutaneous pigmentation is regulated by a complex melanogenic network in which skin cells synthesize growth factors and cytokines. Mutations in genes encoding these regulators modify their expression and/or functionality, leading to altered signaling pathways and contributing to altered skin phenotypes. In this issue, Amyere et al. report a genome-wide analysis of seven families with familial progressive hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation, identifying three new mutations in KITLG. The study underlines the relevance of investigating candidate genes implicated in the onset of pigmentary disor

The performance of 11 fingertip pulse oximeters during hypoxemia in healthy human participants with varied, quantified skin pigment.

BACKGROUND: Fingertip pulse oximeters are widely available, inexpensive, and commonly used to make clinical decisions in many settings. Device performance is largely unregulated and poorly characterised, especially in people with dark skin pigmentation. METHODS: Eleven popular fingertip pulse oximeters were evaluated using the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Guidance (2013) and International Organization for Standardization Standards (ISO, 2017) in 34 healthy humans with diverse skin pigmentation utilising a controlled desaturation study with arterial oxygen saturation (SaO 2) plateaus …

Cultured epidermal autografts for treatment of stable vitiligo: Quantitative analysis of color matching with surrounding normally pigmented skin.

Cultured epidermal autografts (CEA) are surgical therapeutic alternatives for patients with stable vitiligo resistant to conventional medical treatments. In the present study, we assessed color matching before and at 12 months after CEA treatment. Eleven patients with 16 vitiligo lesions were included in this prospective study. The recipient sites were prepared by CO2 laser superficial ablation and subjected to CEA application. We clinically evaluated and categorized the color matching of the repigmented skin as well as the percentage of repigmentation. We also obtained three color values (L*a

Carbon dioxide laser ablation of dermatosis papulosa nigra: high satisfaction and few complications in patients with pigmented skin.

Dermatosis papulosa nigra (DPN) is a common condition of pigmented skin. Whilst lesions are benign, they may be symptomatic or cosmetically disfiguring. Ablative lasers have previously been reported as a useful therapeutic modality in DPN. We report the largest case series to date of patients with DPN ablated with the carbon dioxide (CO2) laser. A retrospective case note review was conducted of all patients with DPN treated in our laser clinic in the last five years, and a post-treatment telephone survey was undertaken to assess patient satisfaction. Forty-five patients were identified, with a

Histological and Strand-Specific Transcriptomic Analyses Reveal Developmental Dynamics and Pigmentation-Associated Candidate Genes in Black and White Skin Regions of Bama Miniature Pigs.

Guangxi Bama miniature pigs are a highly inbred population developed from Bama Xiang pigs and exhibit a stable "two-end black" skin phenotype, making them a useful model for studying regional skin pigmentation. However, the developmental timing and molecular basis of this color difference remain unclear. In this study, black and white skin samples were collected from the posterior head/neck region at six developmental stages: embryonic days 65, 90, and 105, birth, and postnatal days 30 and 180. Histological examination and strand-specific RNA sequencing showed that developmental stage was the …
