Adenomatoid tumor is a benign, usually small lesion that may be found within the wall of fallopian tubes or beneath the uterine serosa near the uterine cornu. It is often accompanied by smooth muscle hypertrophy that may obscure the adenomatoid tumor. We herein report a very unusual case of infarcted leiomyoadenomatoid tumor of the uterus and ovary in a 24-year-old woman who presented with severe lower abdominal pain and masses in the uterus and right ovary. Pelvic ultrasonography and computed tomography revealed a 5 cm mass in the myometrium and a 4 cm mass in the right ovary. Laparoscopy-ass

h-Caldesmon is considered a novel specific marker for tumors with smooth muscle differentiation. To reassess its diagnostic use, the authors evaluated the immunohistochemical expression of h-caldesmon and other myogenic markers (calponin, alpha-smooth muscle actin, HHF35, and desmin) in 30 leiomyosarcomas (external soft tissues [15], retroperitoneum [8], uterus [5], other sites [2]), 26 myofibroblastic lesions, and 26 fibrohistiocytic tumors of varying biologic potential and histology. In contrast with previous data, h-caldesmon was expressed only in 11 (36%) of the 30 leiomyosarcomas analyzed

Vascular permeability factor (VPF), also known as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), is an angiogenic factor with important roles in tumor growth, wound healing, and inflammation. VPF/VEGF interacts with endothelial cells by way of two high-affinity receptor tyrosine kinases: flt-1 and KDR. The vast majority of published studies have described expression of the VPF/VEGF receptors only in endothelial cells, and the statement is frequently made that these receptors are endothelial-cell-specific. In this study, we detected mRNA for flt-1 and KDR by in situ hybridization in smooth muscle c

The authors describe clinical and pathologic features present in an adolescent girl who had a gastric tumor and mediastinal mass. The latter was shown to be a paraganglioma, and the gastric neoplasm was classified as malignant "leiomyoblastoma," with the use of current histologic criteria. This tumor had metastasized to the liver but not to the lungs. Although the histologic criteria for leiomyoblastoma were fulfilled, no definite evidence of smooth-muscle cell differentiation was present ultrastructurally or by immunostaining methods. Gastric tumors that form part of "Carney's triad" are know

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the breast is a rare neoplasm whose cribriform architecture may mimic invasive cribriform carcinoma, cribriform ductal carcinoma in situ, and collagenous spherulosis. The diagnosis may be even more challenging in needle core biopsies. Immunohistochemical expression of p63 and c-kit distinguishes adenoid cystic carcinoma from invasive cribriform carcinoma and ductal carcinoma in situ. A formal comparison of the immunophenotype of adenoid cystic carcinoma to collagenous spherulosis has not been reported. Of concern is the overlap in myoepithelial markers between these

Dedifferentiated liposarcomas may display a variety of "heterologous" lines of differentiation, including osseous, vascular, skeletal, and/or smooth muscular. There have been six previously reported examples of leiomyosarcomas associated with high levels of serum human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) production, comprised of cases originating from the retroperitoneum, spermatic cord, small intestine, and uterus. This report describes the first example of a dedifferentiated liposarcoma that combined both of the aforementioned features: extensive heterologous (leiomyosarcomatous) differentiation an

Leiomyoma is a rare intraocular tumor that arises from uveal smooth muscle. Herein, we report a large leiomyoma that occupied nearly 50% of the globe, closely resembling melanoma. A 40-year-old female presented with a 17 × 15 × 11 mm amelanotic ciliochoroidal mass causing visual defect in her right eye (OD). Based on transillumination features of tumor shadow and ultrasonographic features of acoustically solid mass, there was low clinical suspicion for leiomyoma or schwannoma, and a preliminary diagnosis of ciliochoroidal melanoma was rendered. Following enucleation, histopathology revealed a

Angiomyolipoma (AML) is a mesenchymal tumor commonly found in the kidneys. Extra-renal AML is uncommon and especially rare in the nasal cavity. To our knowledge, fewer than five cases of nasal AML are reported in the United States. We present a case of nasal AML in a 65-year-old man with a history of rhinosinusitis and obstruction of the left nasal cavity. The lesion comprised of admixed spindled smooth muscle cells, mature adipose tissue, and thick-walled blood vessels. Smooth muscle differentiation of the spindled cells was confirmed by expression of smooth muscle actin. Surprisingly, melano

The basic calponin gene is a smooth muscle differentiation-specific gene that encodes an actin-binding protein involved in the regulation of smooth muscle contractility. We studied the expression of the calponin gene in 8 human osteosarcoma cell lines and 17 primary human osteosarcoma tissues by RT-PCR analysis. We also analyzed mRNA expression of smooth muscle-specific genes including SM22alpha, caldesmon and alpha-actin, and for neutral and acidic calponin isoforms. The genes were expressed at various levels by osteosarcoma cell lines and tissues of diverse histological subtypes. The basic c

Spindle-shaped cells from Kaposi's sarcoma lesions (AIDS-KS cells) were cultured for long periods in the presence of conditioned medium from activated CD4-positive T cells (HTLV-II infected transformed nonvirus producer) and characterized under in vitro conditions. To investigate a possible vascular origin, AIDS-KS cells were analyzed for the presence of smooth muscle alpha-actin, a differentiation marker for vascular smooth muscle cells. Immunofluorescence studies using a monoclonal antibody for smooth muscle alpha-actin demonstrated positive staining of the AIDS-KS cells (KS-3 and KS-4) but

An immortalized implantation site intermediate trophoblastic cell line, IST-1, was established from a human placenta of 7 weeks gestation. IST-1 cells phenotypically resembled the implantation site intermediate trophoblastic cells in situ and expressed Mel-CAM (MUC 18 or CD146). Mel-CAM is a cell adhesion molecule belonging to the immunoglobulin gene superfamily. It is involved in heterophilic cell-cell adhesion and plays a role in several biological processes including tumor progression. We have previously shown that Mel-CAM was highly expressed in the intermediate (extravillous) trophoblast

Mesectodermal leiomyoma of the ciliary body is a rare benign tumor with double (muscular and neural) differentiation. This neoplasm is considered to originate from the ciliary body smooth muscle, a neural crest derivative. We report a case of mesectodermal leiomyoma of the right eye occurring in a 53-year-old woman, who presented with significant decrease of visual acuity. A malignant melanoma was highly suspected on clinical evaluation, and the globe was enucleated. The tumor measured 1.2cm in greatest dimension, and consisted of spindle and ovoid cells with abundant fibrillary cytoplasmic pr

A 46-year-old woman presented with a pelvic mass. At the time of operation a large, exophytic, multinodular tumor extended into the peritoneal cavity and right broad ligament from a pedunculated attachment to the uterus in the region of the right cornu. On external examination the lesion had the appearance of cotyledonoid dissecting leiomyoma. On microscopic examination bulbous processes were composed of benign smooth muscle arranged in interlacing fascicles or swirls; there was focal hydropic degeneration. Significant nuclear atypia, mitotic activity, and coagulative tumor necrosis were not e

This collective review includes all available case reports of smooth muscle (stromal) tumors of the stomach in the world literature from 1762 to 1996. It updates our previous review from 1767 to 1959. Overall, we identified 2189 patients with leiomyoma (LM) and 1594 with leiomyosarcoma (LMS). The peak age of incidence of LM was 50 to 59 years, while LMS was most frequently seen between ages 60 and 69. Women were more likely to develop LM, and men more commonly presented with malignant smooth muscle tumors of the stomach. Concerning the patterns of growth, LMs were more likely to grow intralumi

Blood vessels in brain tumors, particularly glioblastomas, have been shown to express CD90. CD90(+) cells in and around blood vessels in cancers including brain tumors have been identified as endothelial cells, cancer stem cells, fibroblasts or pericytes. In this study, we aimed to determine the nature or type(s) of cells that express CD90 in human brain tumors as well as an experimental rat glioma model by double immunofluorescence staining. The majority of CD90(+) cells in human glioblastoma tissue expressed CD31, CD34 and von Willebrand factor, suggesting that they were endothelial cells. V

Glomus tumor is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm originating from the modified smooth muscle cells of the glomus body. Primary colonic glomus tumor is extremely rare with only 5 cases published in the English literature. In this article, we report the sixth case of primary colonic glomus tumor in a 50-year-old female with no significant past medical history who presented with routine screening colonoscopy. The entire colon was endoscopically unremarkable except an incidental 6-mm sessile polyp located in the descending colon. Biopsy showed a densely cellular neoplasm composed of small, bland, sligh

Pulmonary hamartoma is a rare benign tumor of the lung. It predominantly affects older males and is frequently peripherally located. On chest radiography, it classically appears as a "coin lesion" exhibiting characteristic popcorn-like calcifications. We report the case of a 62-year-old male patient, a former smoker, being treated for multiple myeloma. A computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a solid, bilobed pulmonary nodule in the lingula measuring 8 mm in the long axis, for which he underwent surgical resection. Macroscopically, the tumor appeared whitish, multilobulated, well-defined, and
