Bites by Tomodon dorsatus (serpentes, dipsadidae): Clinical and epidemiological study of 86 cases.

A total of 86 proven cases of Tomodon dorsatus bites admitted to Hospital Vital Brazil (HVB) of Butantan Institute, in São Paulo, Brazil, between 1945 and 2018, were retrospectively analyzed. The cases included were those in which the snake was brought to HVB and was correctly identified. Of the 86 cases of snake bites, it was possible to describe the sex of the snake in 52 cases; 31 (59.6%) snakes were male. Only 52 snakes out of 86 could be studied because of their preservation status. The length of snakes (snout-vent length) ranged from 180 to 770 mm. Of the 86 snakes, 72 could be distingui…

Relationship between bite-to-hospital time and morbidity in victims of carpet viper bite in North-Central Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Envenomation from snake bites is a public health hazard in tropical countries. The observed mortality among in-hospital patients bitten by carpet viper (Echis ocellatus) in northern Nigeria has drastically reduced, related to the use of a mono-specific ovine Fab anti-snake venom. However, many victims survive with temporary or permanent physical or psychological sequelae. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to find the relationship between bite-to-hospital time and morbidity in patients bitten by carpet viper. METHODS: A prospective study was conducted in North-Central Nigeria. The signs of m…

Snakebite by Micrurus averyi (Schmidt, 1939) in the Brazilian Amazon basin: Case report.

Micrurus snakes, commonly known as coral snakes, are responsible for 0.4% of the snakebites envenomings in Brazil. In this report, we describe a case of envenoming by Micrurus averyi, the black-headed coral snake, recorded in the western Brazilian Amazon. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first published case perpetrated by this species. The major complaint of the patient was an intense local pain and paresthesia. Examination of the bite site revealed edema extending from the left foot up the left leg that was accompanied by erythema involving the foot and distal third of the leg. Syst

Suspected Vipera palaestinae envenomation in three cats.

Vipera palaestinae is the only venomous snake in Israel whose envenomation is clinically significant. It is found in most of the populated areas of the country. The venom of Vipera palaestinae has hemorrhagic and neurotoxic activity. Viper snake envenomation always demonstrates local effects with or without systemic effects. Cats are considered more resistant to snake bites than other animals. Although several case reports of snakebites in cats have been published, this is the first report which describes cases of cats suspected of being bitten by Vipera palaestinae. These cases differ in thei…

Use of stun guns for venomous bites and stings: a review.

During the past 2 decades, articles suggesting that stun guns be utilized to treat venomous bites and stings have appeared in both the lay and medical press. Although never widely considered to be standard therapy for venomous bites and stings, stun guns are still considered to be a treatment option by some medical practitioners and outdoor enthusiasts. A Medline search was performed using these terms: venomous bites, venomous stings, snake bites, spider bites, electrical, stun gun, high voltage electricity, low amperage electricity, direct current, and shock therapy. Articles selected include…

Effects of snake venoms on hemostasis.

Proteins found in venoms, especially of the Viperidae snake family, exert, often with a narrow specificity, activating, inactivating, or other converting effects on different components of the hemostatic and fibrinolytic systems, respectively. Some purified snake venom proteins have become valuable tools in basic research and in diagnostic procedures in hemostaseology. "Procoagulant" as well as "anticoagulant" venom components have been identified in in vitro test systems. "Procoagulant" snake venom components may cause in vivo, upon massive application as in the case of snake-bite of small pr

Adder bite on eyelid along with retained intraorbital fangs.

PURPOSE: Snake bite to the eye is a rare event. Most cases reported in the literature are due to boa constrictor bites. This is a rare case of snake bite from a common adder (Vipera berus) to the ocular adnexa along with a retained intraorbital tooth. METHOD: A 57-year-old man presented with a history of being bitten by an adder in the left eye upper lid 12 days previously while bending down to pick up a log at his farm. He developed a firm, tender lump in the medial part of his left upper eyelid. RESULT: A CT scan revealed an extraconal curved calcific dense foreign body, about 5 mm in leng

Snakebite by the bushmaster (Lachesis muta) in Brazil: case report and review of the literature.

The bushmaster (Lachesis muta) of Central and South America, the world's longest pit viper, is capable of injecting a large dose of potent venom when it bites. A 28-year-old man, bitten by a 1.82 m long L. m. muta in Brazil, developed pain and oedema at the bite site, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and sweating. There was peripheral neutrophil leucocytosis and evidence of fibrinogen consumption with secondary activation of the fibrinolytic system. Two hours after the bite, eight ampoules of Instituto Butantan Lachesis antivenom was administered, and haemostasis was normal 24 hr later. A review of

Clinical, hematobiochemical, and pathological findings and therapeutic management of viperine snake envenomation in zebu cattle.

The present investigation was carried out to study the epidemiology, clinical signs, bleeding profile, kidney function, and pathology and to evaluate the therapeutic protocol for viperine snake envenomation in zebu cattle over a period of 14 years. A total of 98 cases of viperine bite were reported with the highest incidence during monsoon months in grazing male zebu cattle. Ascending swelling over the affected limb with lameness or asymmetrical swelling over the face with dyspnea was a consistent clinical finding. Increased bleeding tendency was invariably observed in ailing cattle with major

The importance of bites by the saw-scaled or carpet viper (Echis carinatus): epidemiological studies in Nigeria and a review of the world literature.

The incidence of Echis carinatus (saw-scaled or carpet viper) bite and its mortality have been investigated in the Nigerian savanna region. A geographical area was defined in which the snake was particularly abundant and bites were frequent. Perennial and seasonal fluctuations in incidence and mortality, the circumstances in which bites occurred and the types of people bitten were studied at Bambur, Zaria, Kaltungo and Gombe hospitals. Peak incidence coincided with the increase in farming during the rains whereas percentage mortality seemed to be greatest during the cold dry season. The majori

Snake venom components and their applications in biomedicine.

Snake envenomation is a socio-medical problem of considerable magnitude. About 2.5 million people are bitten by snakes annually, more than 100,000 fatally. However, although bites can be deadly, snake venom is a natural biological resource that contains several components of potential therapeutic value. Venom has been used in the treatment of a variety of pathophysiological conditions in Ayurveda, homeopathy and folk medicine. With the advent of biotechnology, the efficacy of such treatments has been substantiated by purifying components of venom and delineating their therapeutic properties. T

Regional Differences in Systemic Toxicity Following Texas Coral Snake (Micrurus tener) Envenomations.

BackgroundThe Texas coral snake, Micrurus tener, is one of three elapid species native to the continental United States. The purpose of the study was to describe the clinical features of their envenomation.MethodsWe reviewed all human coral snake bites reported to the Texas Poison Center Network between January 2000 and December 2023. We excluded informational calls and cases in which the snake responsible for the bite was not confirmed as M. tener. Finally, we excluded bite victims who did not seek medical attention and those for whom no clinical information was available. The data collected …

Envenoming and antivenom use in Australia.

Australia has a diverse and rich venomous fauna, both terrestrial and marine, including some of the most venomous species in each class. Antivenom is the principal therapy for the majority of medically significant envenomings and is currently supplied through a single source, CSL, Melbourne. Cases of envenoming reported to Australian poisons information centers (PICs) are dominated by spiderbite and insect stings, respectively accounting for 53.7% and 39.3% of all bite/sting calls. Marine animal bites/stings/poisonings account for only 4% of PIC calls in this category, while snakebites account

COUNTING CALIFORNIA'S SNAKEBITES.

Poisonous snakebites happen in all sections of California, but they are especially frequent in Southern California. An estimated 221 (138 in-patients and 83 out-patients) people were bitten by snakes annually, an incidence of 1.41 bites per 100,000 people. However, the estimated case-fatality rate was less than one-half of one per cent. Of 135 in-patients reported in detail by California hospitals during 1958 and 1959, 123 (91 per cent) were bitten by rattlesnakes, one (1 per cent) by a foreign snake, and 11 (8 per cent) by unidentified poisonous snakes. "Seasonal epidemics" of snakebites occu
