Lower-extremity strength ratios of professional soccer players according to field position.

Previous investigators have proposed that knee strength, hamstrings to quadriceps, and side-to-side asymmetries may vary according to soccer field positions. However, different results have been found in these variables, and a generalization of this topic could lead to data misinterpretation by coaches and soccer clubs. Thus, the aim of this study was to measure knee strength and asymmetry in soccer players across different field positions. One hundred and two male professional soccer players performed maximal concentric and eccentric isokinetic knee actions on the preferred and nonpreferred l…

Acute inguinal pain associated with iliopectineal bursitis in four professional soccer players.

Four professional soccer players were investigated for acute or subacute pain in the inguinal region. Clinical tests were negative for an inguinal hernia or adductor tendinitis. Resisted hip flexion caused pain. MRI in these four patients showed the onset of iliopectineal bursitis, with signal abnormalities predominantly at the periphery of the psoas tendon in contact with the iliopectineal eminence. Ultrasound-guided steroid injection allowed the two players injected to continue their sporting activity. The two other players were treated by 3 and 7 days rest and oral anti-inflammatory treatme…

Lower limb strength in professional soccer players: profile, asymmetry, and training age.

Kicking and cutting skills in soccer are clearly unilateral, require asymmetrical motor patterns and lead to the development of asymmetrical adaptations in the musculoskeletal function of the lower limbs. Assuming that these adaptations constitute a chronicity-dependent process, this study examined the effects of professional training age (PTA) on the composite strength profile of the knee and ankle joint in soccer players. One hundred soccer players (n=100) with short (5-7 years), intermediate (8-10 years) and long (>11 years) PTA were tested bilaterally for isokinetic concentric and eccentri…

Analysis of time-varying impact points in soccer kicking using curved foot geometry.

The impact phase in soccer kicking, while extremely brief, determines both ball velocity and rotation. Quantifying the moment governing this rotation requires precise, time-resolved identification of the impact point; however, a robust methodology has not yet been established. This study developed a more accurate approach to determine the impact point by incorporating the curved geometry of the foot's impact area, enabling comprehensive calculation of mechanical variables of ball motion. To capture foot surface geometry under static conditions, 105 reflective markers were applied at high densi…

Soccer heading and white matter microstructural changes: a two-year longitudinal cohort study.

Soccer is played by over 265 million people worldwide, with repetitive head impacts from ball heading being common practice. However, the long-term neurological effects of such impacts on amateur players remain poorly understood. This two-year longitudinal cohort study examined whether cumulative soccer ball heading affects white matter microstructure and cognitive performance in adult amateur players from the New York City metropolitan area. The study followed 159 amateur soccer players (24.3% female, ages 18–53) who completed diffusion MRI scans and cognitive assessments at baseline and two-y…

Concussion and Head Injuries in Soccer: Research Trends, Knowledge Structure, and Emerging Themes.

INTRODUCTION: Soccer is the world's most widely played sport and exposes athletes to a distinctive combination of acute concussion risk and repetitive head-impact exposure. Player-to-player contact, aerial challenges, falls, and purposeful heading all contribute to the spectrum of head impacts encountered in the sport. Although the literature has expanded substantially, its development, disciplinary structure, geographic distribution, and evolving research priorities have not been comprehensively characterized. This study maps the research landscape of concussion and head injury in soccer and …

Editorial Commentary: Video Analysis of Football (Soccer) Injury Can Guide Rehabilitation and Recovery.

Video analysis has emerged as a powerful tool to systematically inspect musculoskeletal injuries in sport, allowing determination of injury mechanism (noncontact, indirect contact, or direct contact), situational pattern, and biomechanics. Approximately 90% of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in professional football players happen without direct contact at the knee level. Noncontact ACL injury increases the risk of sustaining a second ACL injury by 7 times (compared to contact injuries); female football players tend to exhibit even higher rates of injuries without contact. Football A

Metabolomic profiles and antioxidant intake in female soccer players: a cross-sectional study.

PURPOSE: Excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) production during sports can impair performance and recovery. A diet rich in exogenous antioxidants plays a key role in counteracting oxidative stress, and its complex interactions with various circulating compounds can be explored through metabolomics. With the rising popularity of women's soccer, a deeper understanding of dietary intake and its metabolic interactions in female athletes is needed. The study's aims are to assess the habitual dietary intake of antioxidant micronutrients and their associations with oxidative/antioxidant metabolite…
