Associations between Parental Social Support and Early Childhood Screen-time in US Children.

Excessive childhood screen-time is associated with adverse lifestyle and mental health outcomes. Studies suggest that social support, perceived assistance from others, can empower parents to manage screen-time; however, it is unclear which sources of support are relevant and whether income influences these associations. We examined whether individual, family, and neighborhood social support are associated with optimal early childhood screen-time. We performed a cross-sectional analysis of children aged 0-5 years from the 2022 National Survey of Children's Health. Using American Academy of Pedi

Stressors, emotions, and social support systems among respiratory nurses during the Omicron outbreak in China: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory nurses faced tremendous challenges when the Omicron variant spread rapidly in China from late 2022 to early 2023. An in-depth understanding of respiratory nurses' experiences during challenging times can help to develop better management and support strategies. The present study was conducted to explore and describe the work experiences of nurses working in the Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine (PCCM) during the Omicron outbreak in China. METHODS: This study utilized a descriptive phenomenological method. Between January 9 and 22, 2023, semistructured

Who's there and who cares: age as an indicator of social support networks for caregivers among people living with motor neurone disease.

This paper explores the social support networks available to the informal carers of people living with motor neurone disease (MND). An ethno … e health policy-makers assume that healthy social capital exists in Australian communities and that social cohesion will ensure active and available support networks in times of illness or disability, data from this exploratory study indicated that this was not consistently the case. Support networks varied in size and composition; however, age was identified as …

Developmental and Neurobehavioral Toxicity of Etomidate in Zebrafish Across Life Stages.

Etomidate (ETO), a widely used intravenous anesthetic, is increasingly recognized as an emerging environmental contaminant due to its persistence in aquatic systems and potential ecotoxicological effects. This study examined the developmental and neurobehavioral effects of ETO in zebrafish across life stages, encompassing environmentally relevant (0.001-0.1 mg/L) and higher concentrations. In zebrafish embryos, ETO exposure significantly delayed hatching, increased mortality, and induced morphological abnormalities, including pericardial edema, reduced body length, impaired swim bladder inflat

Lived experiences, perceived positive outcomes, and post-traumatic growth among parents with children with epilepsy: A qualitative study.

Childhood-onset epilepsy alters the everyday life of parents who have children or adolescents with epilepsy (CAWE). The aim of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of Greek parents with CAWE, including perceived positive outcomes in their lives, where research in this area is limited. Fifteen parents took part in semi-structured interviews which were conducted online due to the social distancing measures imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Main results showed that parents with CAWE experience stress, somatic symptoms, mood swings, fear along with feelings of anger, and a sense o

Development of the Experiences of Sex Work Stigma Scale Using Item Response Theory: Implications for Research on the Social Determinants of HIV.

While HIV stigma has received significant attention, limited work has been conducted on the measurement of intersecting stigmas. We develope … ains were associated with internalized HIV stigma, depression, anxiety, sexual partner violence and social cohesion across contexts. The ESWS is the first reliable and valid scale to assess multiple domains of sex work stigma and can be used to examine the effects of this form of intersectional stigma on HIV-related outcomes across settings.

Synchrony and Physiological Arousal Increase Cohesion and Cooperation in Large Naturalistic Groups.

Separate research streams have identified synchrony and arousal as two factors that might contribute to the effects of human rituals on social cohesion and cooperation. But no research has manipulated these variables in the field to investigate their causal - and potentially interactive - effects on prosocial behaviour. Across four experimental sessions involving large samples of strangers, we manipulated the synchronous and physiologically arousing affordances of a group marching task within a sports stadium. We observed participants' subsequent movement, grouping, and cooperation via a camer…

Understanding and Improving Arterial Roads to Support Public Health and Transportation Goals.

Arterials are types of roads designed to carry high volumes of motorized traffic. They are an integral part of transportation systems worldwide and exposure to them is ubiquitous, especially in urban areas. Arterials provide access to diverse commercial and cultural resources, which can positively influence community health by supporting social cohesion as well as economic and cultural opportunities. They can negatively influence health via safety issues, noise, air pollution, and lack of economic development. The aims of public health and transportation partially overlap; efforts to improve a…

Temperament as a moderator of the effects of parenting on children's behavior.

This study examined the role of child temperament as moderator of the effect of parenting style on children's externalizing and internalizing behaviors. A series of structural equation models were fit to a representative sample of 2,631 Canadian children from the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth. In addition to testing for the presence of Temperament × Parenting interactions, these models also examined the direct and indirect effects of a number of additional contextual factors such as neighborhood problems, neighborhood cohesion, social support, and maternal depression. Supportive relationships--psychological effects of group counselling in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

The objective of the present study was to examine the psychological impact of a group-oriented approach to disease management and health behaviour in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Seventeen overweight PCOS women were randomised in a crossover design of eight weeks high-intensity aerobic exercise followed by eight weeks of group counselling (n=8) or vice versa (n=9). Interpersonal communication, emotional and relational aspects were observed and analysed throughout the period focusing on changes in health behaviour. The most salient findings showed supportive relationships expres

Psychiatric symptomatology associated with contemporary peacekeeping: an examination of post-mission functioning among peacekeepers in Somalia.

Contemporary peacekeepers frequently confront complex stressors including the need to directly enforce peace between warring factions, to deliver humanitarian aid in the midst of political-social devastation, and to balance shifting rules of engagement. As such, it is proposed that participants may be at increased risk for the development of psychiatric distress. The present study examined the types of stressors encountered by 3,461 peacekeepers in Somalia, their current psychiatric functioning as measured by the Brief Symptom Inventory, and the relationship between exposure to various stresso

Threatened Identity: Self Psychology Informed Communication for Serious Illness Care.

Serious illness threatens both the body and the self: the coherent, continuous sense of who one is, from bodily integrity to psychosocial identity. When illness disrupts identity and patients confront mortality and dependence, a range of responses may follow, including behaviors such as relentless demands, devaluation of clinicians, insistence on additional treatment, or rage at perceived care failures. These presentations are often labeled "narcissistic," yet such a formulation can foreclose clinical understanding. Heinz Kohut's self psychology offers a more generative framework: one that und

A preliminary study in medical anthropology in Brunei, Borneo.

Nine rural village communities in the jungle of Brunei, Borneo were studied to ascertain possible effects of rapid social change on the health of the inhabitants. The social mores and religious beliefs of the rural tribes--Iban, Dusun, and Punan--have undergone but little change over many hundreds of years. During the past three decades, however, enormous social pressures for change have envolved from extraordinary economic prosperity of the region, due to the exploitation of large discoveries of oil and gas. Much of the money has been invested in health care, with the result that malaria, typ
