Over the past year, increasing research attention has been devoted to the issue of women at increased risk of developing breast cancer. These articles focus on a range of issues from recruiting high-risk women into breast cancer trials to recommendations for assessment and counseling women with a family history of breast cancer. In addition, continuing research attention has focused on quality of life, symptom management, and articles related to physician-patient communication. This review summarizes and critiques publications in these areas, and it includes articles reviewing the status of re

This paper reports a number of case histories which illustrate the involvement of UCS inflation processes in the aetiology of a variety of anxiety disorders including agoraphobia, simple phobia, PTSD, obsessive-compulsive disorder and panic disorder. These cases are discussed in the context of: (i) renewed interest in cognitive features of conditioning models of anxiety disorders; and (ii) the implications that such models might have for an understanding of the aetiology and treatment of anxiety-based disorders.

Although great advances have been made in the clinical understanding of trachoma, the disease remains endemic in many parts of the world. Economic, environmental, cultural and behavioral factors continue to play an important role in trachoma transmission and progression. The trachoma literature however, contains relatively few studies which rigorously assess the importance of social factors. A critical review of the trachoma literature implicates individual and community hygiene as important risk factors for disease. Specific risk behaviors remain to be identified and validated as independent

A summation model of classical conditioning was used to describe the deviant sexual arousal pattern of a male psychiatric patient. Penile assessment showed a response to a compound stimulus (radio static plus a picture of a woman) that was approximately equal to the sum of the responses to each component alone. The subject's self-report of sexual arousal followed a similar pattern. A distinction was made between total and partial fetishism. It was suggested that what may be particularly troublesome in partial fetishism is the potential for high levels of summated arousal.

PURPOSE: Social participation is significantly limited for children with neurodevelopmental conditions. Many social participation opportunities are derived from physical activities, which may be restricted for children with neurodevelopmental conditions. Adapted bikes play a crucial role in facilitating physical activity. This study aims to investigate the experience of children with neurodevelopmental conditions and the impact of adapted bike use on enabling physical activity and social participation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A qualitative descriptive approach was used to examine the experienc

The present study investigated whether post-event processing (PEP) involving mental imagery about a past speech is particularly detrimental for socially anxious individuals who are currently anticipating giving a speech. One hundred fourteen high and low socially anxious participants were told they would give a 5 min impromptu speech at the end of the experimental session. They were randomly assigned to one of three manipulation conditions: post-event processing about a past speech incorporating imagery (PEP-Imagery), semantic post-event processing about a past speech (PEP-Semantic), or a cont

OBJECTIVE: This article explores the role of social determinants of health in pain care, highlighting their contribution to health inequities and offering strategies for clinicians to respond to these factors in clinical practice.
METHODS: This clinical update aligns with the 2025 IASP Global Year, which focuses on pain management and education in low- and middle-income countries, as well as low-income settings and priority populations in high-income countries.
RESULTS: Social determinants of health-defined as the social, economic, and environmental conditions shaping people's health outcome

Loneliness is linked to negative mental health outcomes like depression and social anxiety. However, it is unclear how loneliness and these conditions are connected. This study aims to address two questions: (a) Are there pathways connecting loneliness to these conditions? (b) What symptoms play a role in these pathways? Using network analyses, the study examined a representative sample of 962 adults from the UK (mean age = 46, females = 492). The network analysis revealed four dimensions: depression, social anxiety and two dimensions for loneliness (isolation and social connectedness). Two di

OBJECTIVES: Previous research has suggested that Inuit children experience poor health as compared to their non-Aboriginal counterparts, although social determinants such as family and social conditions, lifestyle or behaviour, and cultural factors may be at play. The purpose of the current study was to examine the parent-reported health of Inuit children under 6 years of age living in Canada.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Data from the 2006 Aboriginal Children's Survey were used to examine measures of Inuit child health as rated by parents including child health, limitations to physical activity

BACKGROUND: Chronic back pain is prevalent in Brazil, leading to enormous healthcare costs and social burdens. It also disproportionately affects low-income and less-healthy people.
OBJECTIVES: This study examines the associations of chronic back pain with biological, psychological, and social factors; how it limits usual activities; and how chronic back pain influences the use of treatment services.
METHODS: Using Brazil's National Health Survey (PNS-2019), multivariate logistic regressions were conducted to examine how biological, psychological, and social factors correlate with chronic ba

Individuals with Angelman syndrome (AS) present with severe intellectual disability alongside a social phenotype characterised by social communication difficulties and an increased drive for social engagement. As the social phenotype in this condition is poorly understood, we examined patterns of social attention and social modulation of attention in AS. Twenty-four individuals with AS and twenty-one young children with similar mental age were shown videos featuring unfamiliar actors who performed simple actions across two conditions: a playful condition, in which the actor showed positive fac

The purpose of this study was to investigate social anxiety and the effect of rumination and distraction periods immediately following a speech task on subsequent postevent processing. A secondary aim was to examine the content of postevent rumination. Participants (N = 114 students) completed measures of social anxiety and depression, delivered a 3-minute speech, and were randomly assigned to complete (1) a rumination form about the speech (guided negative rumination condition) or (2) an anagram form (distraction condition). One week later participants completed measures of postevent processi

Behavioral inhibition refers to a temperament or style of reacting that some infants and young children exhibit when confronted with novel situations or unfamiliar adults or peers. Research on behavioral inhibition has examined the link between this set of behaviors to the neural systems involved in the experience and expression of fear. There are strong parallels between the physiology of behaviorally inhibited children and the activation of physiological systems associated with conditioned and unconditioned fear. Research has examined which caregiving behaviors support the frequency of behav

Risk prevention is often counterproductive to stallions' living conditions when assessed under welfare aspects. In the wild, stallions live in social groups, but under domestic conditions, the majority of breeding stallions live in individual boxes with limited social contact. This stimulates aggressiveness and the incidence of stereotypic behavior. While racehorse stallions start their breeding career after having finished their performance career, riding horse stallions are often simultaneously used for breeding and performance. Training, performance, and the associated stress are unlikely t

Thirty-nine individuals with generalized social phobia (social anxiety disorder) and 39 nonclinical controls performed a public speech after receiving cues about social standards. Using a novel video manipulation paradigm, one third of participants received cues indicating that standards for performance were high, one third received cues that standards were low, and the remaining third were given no explicit information about expected standards (i.e., standards were ambiguous). Individuals with social phobia performed objectively worse than controls in all conditions, but rated their performan
