Amygdala dysfunction plays a role in the social impairments in autism spectrum disorders (ASD), but it is unclear which of its subregions are abnormal in ASD. This study compared the volume and functional connectivity (FC) strength of three FC-defined amygdala subregions between ASD and controls, and assessed their relation to social skills in ASD. A subregion associated with the social perception network was enlarged in ASD (F1 = 7.842, p = .008) and its volume correlated significantly with symptom severity (social skills: r = .548, p = .009). Posthoc analysis revealed that the enlargement wa

BACKGROUND: Past research suggests that socially anxious individuals display a tendency to interpret ambiguous and clearly valenced information in a threatening way. Interpretation training programs, in which individuals are trained to endorse benign rather than negative interpretations of ambiguous social scenarios, have proven effective for reducing anxiety-related cognitive biases. However, it is not clear whether the same paradigms are effective in modifying interpretation biases for clearly valenced social information.

BACKGROUND: This paper explores the intricate interplay between young fatherhood, masculinities, and structural factors in South Africa. The country grapples with a complex web of social, economic, and cultural dynamics that shape the experiences of young men's transition into fatherhood.
METHODS: This qualitative study used snowball and purposive sampling techniques. In-depth interviews were undertaken with 24 young biological fathers aged between 18 and 24 years in an informal settlement in Durban (12) and a rural community in Pietermaritzburg (12), KwaZulu-Natal. Four focus-group discussio

Intimate partner violence (IPV) within heterosexual relationships affects both men and women, yet an in-depth description of IPV against men in developing countries is still limited. This study explored community perceptions of male IPV victimization in an informal settlement in Nairobi, Kenya. We conducted 12 focus group discussions (FGDs) with 118 ever-married participants (59 men and 59 women), divided into 6 FGDs for each gender. We performed thematic analysis using NVivo software. This article presents three main themes that emerged during data analysis: (a) triggers, (b) manifestations,

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) are accompanied by impaired multimodal communication. This is particularly evident in production and comprehension deficits of both speech and gesture. Previous neuroimaging findings indicate reduced activation in sensorimotor regions, such as the left postcentral gyrus and right insula, during object-related speech processing in SSD (He et al., 2021). However, it remains unclear how semantic congruency of co-verbal gestures influences the neural processing of object-related speech. This study aims to investigate the effect of semantically rel

Depressed individuals are excessively sensitive to negative information but blunt to positive information, which has been considered as vulnerability to depression. Here, we focused on inhibitory control over attentional bias on social evaluation in individuals with depression. We engaged individuals with and without depressive symptoms (categorized by Beck Depression Inventory-II) in a novel attention control task using positive and negative evaluative adjectives as self-referential feedback given by social others. Participants were instructed to look at sudden onset feedback targets (pro-sac

BACKGROUND: P300 abnormalities indicate changes in information processing and are one of the most reliable biological markers of schizophrenia. We sought to investigate whether abnormalities in P300 (P3) or other event-related potentials are also present in subjects at ultra high risk (UHR) for developing psychosis and whether they are helpful in predicting transition to psychosis.
METHODS: The N1, N2, N2b, P2, and P3 amplitudes were assessed in 61 UHR subjects, of whom 18 subjects (30%) made a transition to psychosis over a 3-year follow-up period (UHR + T: age 20.4 years) and 43 (70%) did n

Social anxiety occurs in a range of social situations, the salience of which is influenced by prevailing modes of social contact. The emergence of computer mediated communication (CMC), buoyed by the recent explosion of social networks, has changed the way many people make and maintain social contacts. We randomly assigned 30 socially anxious and 30 low social anxiety participants to a brief internet chat introduction or a control internet surfing condition followed by a standardized face to face (FTF) interaction. We hypothesized that for socially anxious participants the chat introduction wo

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a novel virus in the coronavirus family, causing the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Biomedical vaccines are key but alongside biomedical vaccines, a social vaccine can be similarly useful to prevent infection from SARS-CoV-2, if applied as a health promotion strategy. In order to slow down and control the spread of SARS-CoV-2, applying the social vaccine concept should be considered in parallel. From a health promotion perspective, a social vaccine is a process of social and political mobilization driven by governmental and n

Over the last three decades, quality of life (QoL) has been advocated as an indicator of social care outcomes for adults with intellectual disabilities. In England, the Adult Social Care Survey (ASCS) is conducted annually by local authorities to contribute to the evidence base of the care-related QoL of people receiving publicly funded adult social care. This study explores relationships between QoL and non-care-related factors to identify relationships that could inform social care policy and practice. Cross-sectional data collected from 13,642 adults who participated in the 2011 and 2012 AS

This study examines the specificity and impact of comorbid disorders in probands on the familial transmission of panic and social anxiety disorders. It employs a contemporary family study design with 225 probands (with and without panic and social anxiety disorders) sampled from outpatient clinics and the local community. Their 1053 adult first-degree relatives were assessed for lifetime disorders, based on best estimate diagnoses derived from semi-structured psychiatric diagnostic interviews (Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia), multi-informant family history information, and

Elders living alone may experience worse health outcomes than do those living with spouse and/or children. Using baseline data from a randomized trial to promote high blood pressure (HBP) control in Korean elders (N = 440), we examined the relationship between living arrangements and HBP control. We also interviewed a sub-sample to better understand the patterns of social interactions associated with different types of living arrangements. One in five reported living alone; this group tended to be older and female, and resided in senior group housing. Those living alone were twice as likely as

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: An attentional bias for negative information plays an important role in the development and maintenance of (social) anxiety and depression, which are highly prevalent in adolescence. Attention Bias Modification (ABM) might be an interesting tool in the prevention of emotional disorders. The current study investigated whether visual search ABM might affect attentional bias and emotional functioning in adolescents.
METHODS: A visual search task was used as a training paradigm; participants (n = 16 adolescents, aged 13-16) had to repeatedly identify the only smiling fa

OBJECTIVE: Research using normative and high-risk samples indicates a significant link between problems with self-regulation and child maladjustment. Nevertheless, little is known about the processes that may modify the link between self-regulation and maladjustment. This longitudinal study examined the joint contributions of child self-regulation and positive parenting behaviors to the development of externalizing and internalizing symptomatology spanning from preschool to 1st grade.
METHODS: Data were collected on a total of 95 physically abused children (58% boys); our longitudinal analyse

OBJECTIVES: To explore whether people's organ donation consent decisions occur via a reasoned and/or social reaction pathway.
DESIGN: We examined prospectively students' and community members' decisions to register consent on a donor register and discuss organ donation wishes with family.
METHOD: Participants completed items assessing theory of planned behaviour (TPB; attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioural control (PBC)), prototype/willingness model (PWM; donor prototype favourability/similarity, past behaviour), and proposed additional influences (moral norm, self-identity, recipi

This study examines 12-step groups for recovery from methamphetamine and cocaine use that are attended by men having sex with men and the impact of attendance on HIV risk behavior. Participants in Crystal Meth Anonymous and other 12-step groups were interviewed up to 3 months since their last substance use. Sixty-two initial interviews, and ethnographic observations, were conducted. With entry into the program, mean reported sexual partners fell from around seven to one per month and the proportion having unprotected anal intercourse declined from 70% to 24%. HIV-positive men were more likely

This essay will address a general philosophical concern about autonomy, namely, that a conception of autonomy focused on freedom of the will alone is inadequate, once we consider the effects of oppressive forms of socialization on individuals' formation of choices. In response to this problem, I will present a brief overview of Diana Meyers's account of autonomy as relational and practical. On this view, autonomy consists in a set of socially acquired practical competencies in self-discovery, self-definition, self-knowledge, and self-direction. This account provides a distinction between choic

We compared the predictability of the behaviour of hyperactive children with that of aggressive children, combined hyperactive/aggressive children and normal children. Detailed behaviour measurements relating to each child and an experimenter were recorded during playroom session. Predictability was expressed in information-theoretical measures and data were tested by means of a Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) with between-subject factors "hyperactivity" and "aggression". Hyperactivity was characterised by chaotic social and communicative interaction between child and experimenter a

Social networks shape behaviour, affect information dissemination and undergird collective action. And they can be exploited in the design of interventions in these domains1-7. Although social networks obey fundamental principles, such as the degree distribution8,9, they can nevertheless evolve as ties form and break. Here, through a randomized controlled trial involving a total of 8,331 people in 110 remote Honduran villages, we evaluate the secondary effects of a 22-month public-health intervention1 on pre-existing social-network structure. We used a design in which a varying fraction of vil

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have focused on how individuals with social anxiety process visual information. This study aimed to investigate whether social anxiety affects the processing of facial and vocal expressions when presented separately or together.
METHODS: A total of thirty participants with social anxiety disorders (SAD) and thirty-one healthy controls (HC) took part in a forced two-choice emotion identification task. The task involved presenting expressions of anger and happiness through visual, auditory and audiovisual modalities while simultaneously recording the
