Donor insemination disclosure in social networks: heterosexual couples' experiences.

The way in which heterosexual couples manage information about infertility and donor insemination within their social networks has not yet been explored in-depth. This study focuses on how parents and aspiring parents manage information about infertility and donor insemination within their social networks. Fifteen Belgian couples were interviewed as part of a parenthood research project. Thematic analysis resulted in the identification of four themes. The first of these reveals how the social context can best be understood as a continuous confrontation with social expectations. A second theme

Social network interventions to support cardiac rehabilitation and secondary prevention in the management of people with heart disease.

BACKGROUND: Globally, cardiovascular diseases (CVD, that is, coronary heart (CHD) and circulatory diseases combined) contribute to 31% of all deaths, more than any other cause. In line with guidance in the UK and globally, cardiac rehabilitation programmes are widely offered to people with heart disease, and include psychosocial, educational, health behaviour change, and risk management components. Social support and social network interventions have potential to improve outcomes of these programmes, but whether and how these interventions work is poorly understood.  OBJECTIVES: To assess the

Support Network Typology and Psychological Well-Being Among Young Adults.

The psychological well-being of young adults is a growing concern in the United States. Social networks, comprising relationships that provide various types of support, are crucial predictors of their psychological well-being. A network typology offers a pattern-centered approach to classify relational compositions into subgroups with similar patterns. Using longitudinal data from the UC Berkeley Social Networks Study (UCNets), this study identified a network typology for young adults' support networks and examined its relationship with psychological well-being across four functional support n

Reappraisal of Interpersonal Criticism in Social Anxiety Disorder: A Brain Network Hierarchy Perspective.

Emotion regulation is thought to involve communication between and within large-scale brain networks that underlie emotion reactivity and cognitive control. Aberrant network interaction might therefore be a key neural feature of mental disorders that involve emotion dysregulation. Here we tested whether connectivity hierarchies within and between emotion reactivity and cognitive reappraisal networks distinguishes social anxiety disorder (SAD) patients (n = 70) from healthy controls (HC) (n = 25). To investigate network organization, we implemented a graph-theory method called Dependency Networ

Inter-subject phase synchronization differentiates neural networks underlying physical pain empathy.

Recent approaches for understanding the neural basis of pain empathy emphasize the dynamic construction of networks underlying this multifaceted social cognitive process. Inter-subject phase synchronization (ISPS) is an approach for exploratory analysis of task-fMRI data that reveals brain networks dynamically synchronized to task-features across participants. We applied ISPS to task-fMRI data assessing vicarious pain empathy in healthy participants (n = 238). The task employed physical (limb) and affective (face) painful and corresponding non-painful visual stimuli. ISPS revealed two distinct

Network Location and Risk of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Transmission among Injecting Drug Users: Results of Multiple Membership Multilevel Modeling of Social Networks.

BACKGROUND: Despite the implementation of harm reduction program, some injecting drug users (IDU) continue to engage in high-risk behaviors. It seems that there are some social factors that contribute to risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission in IDUs. The aim of this study was to analysis the social network of IDUs and examines the effect of network location on HIV transmission risk using the multiple membership multilevel models. METHODS: From October 2013 to March 2014 we conducted face-to-face interviews on 147 IDUs. We asked participants to nominate up to 20 people whom t

Gender differences in social networks and physical and mental health: are social relationships more health protective in women than in men?

BACKGROUND: Individuals' relationships are characterized by multidimensional aspects and the unique make-up of different features is more or less supportive of physical and mental health. The current study derived social network types based on an extended set of indicators reflecting the structure, function, and quality of relationships, then examined their associations with diverse physical and mental health outcomes separately for men and women. METHODS: Using samples of 620 South Korean adults (Mage = 53.52), Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) was used to uncover distinct social network types,

Attachment Reminders Trigger Widespread Synchrony across Multiple Brains.

Infant stimuli elicit widespread neural and behavioral response in human adults, and such massive allocation of resources attests to the evolutionary significance of the primary attachment. Here, we examined whether attachment reminders also trigger cross-brain concordance and generate greater neural uniformity, as indicated by intersubject correlation. Human mothers were imaged twice in oxytocin/placebo administration design, and stimuli included four ecological videos of a standard unfamiliar mother and infant: two infant/mother alone (Alone) and two mother-infant dyadic contexts (Social). Atypical segregation of frontoparietal and sensorimotor networks is related to social and executive function impairments in children with ASD.

Two possible indicators of a deficient segregation of functional networks are within-underconnectivity and between-overconnectivity. Both these processes can be observed in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to be associated with different core and co-occurring atypicalties of behavior. We focused on within- and between-network connectivity of Frontoparietal and Sensorimotor networks in ASD compared to typically developed (TD) peers and its links to social difficulties and impairments of executive and motor functions. To our knowledge, this study for the first time described between-network connec

Disentangling Anhedonia and Self-Stigma in Schizophrenia Using Bayesian Network Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The interrelationships among the negative symptoms of schizophrenia and factors affecting quality of life remain unclear. To address this gap, the present study explores the complex interrelationships among anhedonia, self-stigma, self-esteem, psychological resilience, and social support in individuals with schizophrenia. METHODS: A comprehensive battery of measures was used to assess 447 patients with schizophrenia. Undirected network analysis was employed to examine the centrality of various factors, and Bayesian network analysis was used to explore the indirect influence of ups

Neural Representations Behind 'Social Norm' Inferences In Humans.

Humans are highly skilled in social reasoning, e.g., inferring thoughts of others. This mentalizing ability systematically recruits brain regions such as Temporo-Parietal Junction (TPJ), Precuneus (PC) and medial Prefrontal Cortex (mPFC). Further, posterior mPFC is associated with allocentric mentalizing and conflict monitoring while anterior mPFC is associated with self-reference (egocentric) processing. Here we extend this work to how we reason not just about what one person thinks but about the abstract shared social norm. We apply functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate neural

The relationships between social network size, loneliness and personality in individuals living with a neurological condition: an exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: People living with a neurological condition often report having smaller social networks and less frequent social contact, leading to greater loneliness and worse quality of life. This study explored the relationships between personality traits, social network size (SNS) and perceived loneliness in this population. METHODS: Sixty-eight individuals diagnosed with a neurological condition participated in this study. Perceived loneliness was assessed using the UCLA Loneliness Scale - Version 3, SNS was evaluated by the Social Network Index and personality traits were examined using th

Characterization of the temporo-parietal junction by combining data-driven parcellation, complementary connectivity analyses, and functional decoding.

The right temporo-parietal junction (RTPJ) is consistently implicated in two cognitive domains, attention and social cognitions. We conducted multi-modal connectivity-based parcellation to investigate potentially separate functional modules within RTPJ implementing this cognitive dualism. Both task-constrained meta-analytic coactivation mapping and task-free resting-state connectivity analysis independently identified two distinct clusters within RTPJ, subsequently characterized by network mapping and functional forward/reverse inference. Coactivation mapping and resting-state correlations rev

Negative social reactions to assault disclosure as a mediator between self-blame and posttraumatic stress symptoms among survivors of interpersonal assault.

The type of causal attributions offered for traumatic life events has been documented as a potential vulnerability factor for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, few investigations have sought to identify the mechanisms by which such explanations are associated with greater posttraumatic distress. One possible factor that may account for the relationship between maladaptive attributional tendencies and PTSD symptoms is the quality of social reactions received from one's social network upon disclosure. The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between self-blaming

Does centrality in a cross-sectional network suggest intervention targets for social anxiety disorder?

OBJECTIVE: Network analysis allows us to identify the most interconnected (i.e., central) symptoms, and multiple authors have suggested that these symptoms might be important treatment targets. This is because change in central symptoms (relative to others) should have greater impact on change in all other symptoms. It has been argued that networks derived from cross-sectional data may help identify such important symptoms. We tested this hypothesis in social anxiety disorder. METHOD: We first estimated a state-of-the-art regularized partial correlation network based on participants with soci
