Developing Social-ABI-lity: An Online Course to Support Safe Use of Social Media for Connection After Acquired Brain Injury.

PURPOSE: People who have an acquired brain injury (ABI) experience challenges using social media. Inversely, rehabilitation clinicians report feeling inadequately prepared to support them in its use. We aimed to develop a collaboratively designed, evidence-based online training resource to support people with an ABI to learn about using social media. Key recommendations for course design have previously been identified through a mixed methods approach, including (a) qualitative exploration of the experiences of people who use social media after ABI, (b) a scoping review to identify key feature

The effect of adolescents' perceived social support types on sense of meaning in life: the mediating role of social- emotional competence.

BACKGROUND: Lacking a sense of meaning in life has been linked to negative emotions, anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation and suicide, and antisocial behavior. While perceived social support influences the sense of meaning in life, existing research has not precisely categorized perceived social support, with limited research on how a sense of meaning in life is expressed. This study aimed to examine how different types of perceived social support affect adolescents' sense of meaning in life and the mediating role of social-emotional competence. METHODS: Using the Multidimensional Scale of …

The impact of social support cues on pain-related fear and avoidance learning.

Recently, social support cues have been suggested to be "unique" safety signals possessing fear inhibitory properties. Yet, previous research only included autonomic fear measures (i.e., skin conductance) in passive fear conditioning procedures, therefore the impact of social support cues on operant pain-related avoidance learning and self-reported fear and pain-expectancy is unknown. In contrast, previous research showed that social threat cues facilitate pain-related fear learning, but their impact on operant pain-avoidance learning has never been investigated. Pain-free participants (N = 81…

Caregiver social networks and discontinued support during COVID-19: a multilevel dyadic analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Family caregivers provide essential support to older adults, but their extended caregiving networks can be strained during crises. This study examines which characteristics of caregivers' personal networks were associated with discontinued support during the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic, a period of widespread social disruption. METHODS: We analyzed data from the Care Network Connections over Time study, a longitudinal, nationally representative study of U.S. caregivers. Respondents (N = 2,116) reported on support before and during COVID-19. Multilevel logistic regression

Associations Among Stressful Events, Social Support, and Alcohol Use in Women and Men.

Recent stressors may increase the risk of alcohol misuse. However, the number and duration of recent stress, whether social support (SS) moderates these effects, and whether this differs for men and women, are unclear. This cross-sectional study examined the effects of these factors on alcohol use severity, amount, and frequency in 462 community adult women and men. Linear regression (controlling for sex, age, and education) indicated that more stressful life events and longer stress duration were associated with a greater probability of any alcohol use and greater alcohol use severity as meas…

Black Women's Perspectives on Seeking Social Support for Physical Activity: A Qualitative Study.

Black and African American (Black) women in the US experience disproportionately high rates of hypertension (HTN) and low levels of physical activity (PA). Social support (SS) is recognized as an important component of PA promotion, yet less is known about how Black women get SS for PA. This study explored Black women's perspectives on seeking SS for PA and their confidence in doing so. Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with adults aged 40-65 years who self-identified as Black women with HTN. A purposive sampling strategy was used to recruit a balance of physically active and…

Perceived Social Support, Shame, and Psychopathological Symptoms After Perinatal Loss in Portuguese Women.

(1) Background: Perinatal loss is a deeply painful and often invisible experience, with a significant impact on mental health. (2) Methods: A total of 501 Portuguese women who had experienced perinatal loss participated in the study, recruited…

Cognitive Functioning in Rural Older Adults: The Mediating Role of Perceived Social Support.

Background: Aging is a multidimensional process influenced by biological, psychological, and social factors. Social support contributes to cognitive reserve by reducing stress, promoting mental engagement, and reinforcing a sense of belonging. Objective: To examine the association between perceived social support and cognitive functioning among older adults, and to investigate whether social support mediates the relationship between living arrangements and cognitive performance. Methods: The sample included 265 older adults aged 65 years and above, recruited using snowball sampling between Mar…

Social support experiences of trans women/transfeminine adults accessing gender-affirming hormone therapy.

Gender affirming health care (GAHC), particularly gender-affirming hormone therapy, can promote the well-being of transgender women/transfeminine persons. Social gender affirmation, in the form of social support (e.g., use of one's authentic name and pronouns), may complement and strengthen trans people's experiences with GAHC. Most research to-date has focused on social support during GAHC with children and adolescents rather than adults, who experience unique social support needs when navigating health care. Given this gap and an increasingly hostile sociopolitical context limiting transgend…

Frailty and social support in older orthopedic surgical patients: a cross-sectional analysis.

BACKGROUND: Frailty is a common and clinically significant condition among older adults undergoing surgical procedures and is associated with adverse postoperative outcomes. In addition to biological vulnerability, psychosocial factors such as social support may influence recovery processes. However, studies examining the relationship between frailty and perceived social support in older orthopedic surgical patients remain limited. AIM: This study aimed to examine the relationship between frailty and perceived social support in older orthopedic surgical patients and to determine how these var…

Neighborhood Deprivation and Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy: Does Social Support Modify the Association?

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported associations between neighborhood deprivation and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), but without considering effect measure modification by social support. METHODS: This study used the Nulliparous Pregnancy Outcomes Study: Monitoring Mothers-To-Be longitudinal cohort, which recruited participants between 2010 and 2013 across the United States. We used linear probability models with robust standard errors to estimate risk differences for associations of the area deprivation index (ADI) and social support with HDP. Perceived social support was …

Interleukin-6 moderates the relationship between social support, strain, and future depressive symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Inflammation has been increasingly implicated in major depressive disorder (MDD), with interleukin-6 (IL-6) emerging as a key biomarker. How this relates to psychosocial risk factors, such as social support and strain, remains underexplored. IL-6 levels, social support, and strain may interact through shared underlying mechanisms in conferring depression risk. The study examined whether IL-6 levels moderate the associations between social support and strain with future MDD symptoms. METHODS: Longitudinal data from 1,054 community adults in the Midlife Development in the United Sta…

Associations between Parental Social Support and Early Childhood Screen-time in US Children.

Excessive childhood screen-time is associated with adverse lifestyle and mental health outcomes. Studies suggest that social support, perceived assistance from others, can empower parents to manage screen-time; however, it is unclear which sources of support are relevant and whether income influences these associations. We examined whether individual, family, and neighborhood social support are associated with optimal early childhood screen-time. We performed a cross-sectional analysis of children aged 0-5 years from the 2022 National Survey of Children's Health. Using American Academy of Pedi…
