A 4-year-old crossbreed dog presented with a two-day history of lethargy and abdominal effusion. Physical examination and echocardiography revealed pericardial effusion with cardiac tamponade. Pericardiocentesis was performed. Intracytoplasmic Leishmania amastigotes were found on cytological examination of the pericardial fluid. The animal was treated with N-methylglucamine antimoniate and allopurinol. After an initial favorable response, cardiac tamponade reoccurred one month later. The dog died during a pericardiectomy four months after the initial diagnosis. Histology confirmed the presence

The right ventricular apex has been the traditional site for lead placement in veterinary patients who require permanent cardiac pacing therapy for atrioventricular block and sick sinus syndrome. Implantation of leads in this location is a straightforward procedure that most veterinary cardiologists perform routinely. Pacing at the right ventricular apex, however, has been demonstrated to have long-term deleterious effects on the left ventricular function in numerous patient populations and animal models. Alternative lead placement sites and pacing system configurations have been developed, an

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: We sought to determine the prevalence and clinical significance of right heart remodeling and right ventricular (RV) dysfunction in dogs with pulmonary valve stenosis (PS). We also sought to evaluate repeatability of several measurements of severity of PS, right heart size, and RV function in dogs with PS.
ANIMALS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: Several indices of right atrial (RA) size and RV size and function were prospectively evaluated in 48 dogs with PS. Regression analysis was used to determine if indices of right heart size and function were independently associated wi

A four-year-old Japanese Akita was referred for investigation of lethargy, exercise intolerance, and an irregular heart rhythm. He was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, a complex ventricular arrhythmia, and hypothyroidism. Echocardiography identified a nest of anomalous vessels surrounding the heart and shunting into the pulmonary artery. Computed tomography confirmed a coronary arteriovenous malformation consisting of a coronary-to-pulmonary arterial communication and an associated complex nest of tortuous vessels, which was thought to be an incidental finding. Clinical signs improved with

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Coronary artery abnormalities are described sporadically in dogs, most commonly with pulmonic stenosis. Computed tomographic angiography (CTA) allows non-invasive assessment of coronary anatomy. Three-dimensional (3D) models improve the understanding and visualization of spatially complex anatomy. The study objective was to evaluate coronary artery anomalies using CTA imaging and using rapid prototyping technology to create life-sized coronary artery models of these studies.
ANIMALS, MATERIAL AND METHODS: Combined retrospective case and prospective pilot study. Inclus

INTRODUCTION: Canine pulmonary hypertension (PH) is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Tadalafil, a phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor used commonly in humans with PH, has not been evaluated in a clinical trial in dogs with naturally occurring PH. Our objectives were to compare the efficacy of tadalafil and sildenafil on PH assessed by peak tricuspid regurgitant flow velocity, estimated systolic pulmonary arterial pressure gradient, voluntary activity, quality of life, and safety profiles in dogs with moderate to severe PH.

Aortic dissection (AD) is characterized by bleeding within the aortic wall or a tear in the intimal layer of the aortic wall, resulting in the passage of blood from the aortic lumen into the tunica media. In cases of AD, a floating, intimal flap in the aortic lumen divides the lumen into a true portion, with flow present, and a false portion, with no flow. We describe a series of 4 cats with AD of the ascending aorta and moderate aortic insufficiency. Three cats had an acute onset of clinical signs with pericardial effusion and cardiac tamponade, whereas one cat showed a chronic onset without

Aortic stenosis affects 0.028% of cats in a shelter population, with valvular aortic stenosis compromising almost half of these cases. Of congenital heart diseases reported in cats, aortic stenosis is the second most common one, affecting 17% of these cases. Existing literature on valvular aortic stenosis is scant, and thus, presentation and prognosis of affected animals is poorly understood. In this case series, we describe three cats with confirmed valvular aortic stenosis. All cases were diagnosed echocardiographically, and all three had visible aortic valve leaflet fusion and a poststenoti

A 9-month-old kitten with increased resting respiratory rate and exercise intolerance was diagnosed with a congenital partial atrioventricular septal defect causing pulmonary over circulation and presumed pulmonary hypertension based on echocardiogram. Invasive pressure measurements and contrast angiography confirmed this diagnosis. The cat underwent pulmonary artery banding under general anesthesia. Findings of echocardiogram 10 days postoperatively suggested reduced left-to-right shunt volume. Echocardiographic findings were static 4 months postoperatively.

A 2-year-old Airedale terrier was presented with exercise intolerance since birth and newly developed chylous pleural effusion. Imaging procedures including echocardiography, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, and selective angiography revealed an aberrant connection of the azygos vein and the left atrium, a membrane in the right atrium consistent with cor triatriatum dexter, and a patent foramen ovale with right-to-left shunt. Balloon dilation of the membrane in the right atrium seemed to result in transient improvement of exercise tolerance compared with the previous 2

A six-year-old Brussels griffon was presented for cervical swelling three months after implantation of a transvenous pacemaker. Transthoracic echocardiography demonstrated a thrombus associated with the pacemaker lead, partially obstructing right atrial inflow. The laboratory findings were consistent with protein-losing nephropathy. Initial medical therapy consisted of rivaroxaban (0.68 mg/kg orally every 24 hours), clopidogrel (2.5 mg/kg orally every 24 hours), and enalapril (0.5 mg/kg orally every 12 hours). Resolution of cervical and thoracic edema was noted within two weeks of initiating t

Four dogs, referred for management of heartworm (HW) disease, were found to have HWs entangled in their tricuspid valve apparatus. None of the dogs were actively hemolyzing or showed signs of acute cardiovascular collapse that would have necessitated emergency transvenous HW extraction, and surgery was not performed at time of presentation. The dogs received pimobendan and sildenafil within 24 h of identifying HW in the tricuspid valve apparatus, and the HW moved to the pulmonary arteries within 2 days in most cases (median 2 days, range 1-14 days). All dogs survived to discharge from the orig

Transcatheter pulmonary valve (TPV) implantation is a therapeutic approach approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration for human patients with failing pulmonary conduits in 2010 and for failing bioprosthetic surgical pulmonary valves in 2017. We report here the first successful transcatheter implantation of a stented valve in a pulmonary position in a dog with congenital pulmonary valve disease. A 3-year-old, 10.9 kg, client-owned Beagle dog was referred for a follow-up visit after a percutaneous balloon valvuloplasty performed 22 months before for treatment of a severe type A v

A 2-year, 4-month-old neutered female Labrador retriever was brought for evaluation of right-sided congestive heart failure. Echocardiographic examination revealed tricuspid valve dysplasia with only two small orifices in the valve resulting in severe tricuspid stenosis. The dog underwent a right fifth lateral intercostal thoracotomy and surgical tricuspid valvulotomy, under cardiopulmonary bypass. The stenosis was relieved by dividing the valve leaflets between the two orifices with continuation to the commissures, creating a 'bileaflet' valve. The dog made a good recovery initially, with ech

INTRODUCTION: Left ventricular (LV) and left atrial (LA) enlargement affect management and outcome of dogs with cardiac disease. Short-axis, two-dimensional echocardiographic (2DE) images, indexed to the aorta (Ao), are frequently used to identify cardiomegaly. Long-axis images offer complementary views of the left heart.
ANIMALS: Eighty healthy dogs and 25 dogs with MMVD.
METHODS: Healthy dogs were prospectively recruited to determine reference intervals (Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute methodology) for long-axis ratios. Measurement variability and repeatability were quantified by i
