Somatosensory cross-modal plasticity in the superior colliculus of visually deafferented rats.

The effects of neonatal visual deafferentation on the final adult pattern of cortico-collicular connections from the rat primary somatosensory cortex barrel field were studied by injecting an anterograde tracer (BDA) into different locations of the barrel cortex. Collicular afferents originating in the barrel cortex normally end in the intermediate collicular strata (SGI and SAI). However, neonatal visual deafferentation caused an invasion of abundant somatosensory cortical afferents into the lateral portions of the superficial collicular strata (SGS and SO). Moreover, anterograde-labelled fib…

Reduced somatosensory hand representation in thalidomide-induced dysmelia as revealed by fMRI.

The concept of cerebral plasticity suggests that the hand representation in somatosensory cortex is abnormal in congenital malformation disorders. To investigate this issue we studied 11 subjects with different degrees of upper extremity dysmelia due to thalidomide embryopathy in comparison to 10 control subjects. In the affected subjects fingers are typically missing in radio-ulnar order beginning with the thumb. Haemodynamic responses to electrical stimulation of the radial-most and ulnar-most fingers were measured in each subject using functional magnetic resonance tomography. The size of t…

[Pure sensory hemisyndromes caused by infarctions in the pons].

This study reports 3 cases of pure hemisensory syndrome due to lacunar infarction at the pons, demonstrated by magnetic resonance. In all patients somatosensory evoked potentials were abnormal. In two out of the 3 cases these potentials remained abnormal even after clinical exploration normalized. Due to the distribution of the sensitive pathways it may be assumed that the hemisensory syndrome would be caused by lesions located from the cortex to the pons. By means of clinico-pathological correlations the hemisensory syndrome was attributed to lesions exclusively located at the cerebral cortex

Methodological considerations for a chronic neural interface with the cuneate nucleus of macaques.

While the response properties of neurons in the somatosensory nerves and anterior parietal cortex have been extensively studied, little is k … uch and of our sense of limb posture and movements has been studied in the peripheral nerves and in somatosensory cortex, but coding in the cuneate and external cuneate nuclei, the first processing stage for these signals in the central nervous system, remains an enigma. We have developed a method to record from these nuclei, thereby paving the way to studying how sen …

Neural basis of limb ownership in individuals with body integrity identity disorder.

Our body feels like it is ours. However, individuals with body integrity identity disorder (BIID) lack this feeling of ownership for distinct limbs and desire amputation of perfectly healthy body parts. This extremely rare condition provides us with an opportunity to study the neural basis underlying the feeling of limb ownership, since these individuals have a feeling of disownership for a limb in the absence of apparent brain damage. Here we directly compared brain activation between limbs that do and do not feel as part of the body using functional MRI during separate tactile stimulation an

The cortical sensory representation of genitalia in women and men: a systematic review.

Background : Although genital sensations are an essential aspect of sexual behavior, the cortical somatosensory representation of genitalia in women and men remain poorly known and contradictory results have been reported. Objective : To conduct a systematic review of studies based on electrophysiological and functional neuroimaging studies, with the aim to identify insights brought by modern methods since the early descriptions of the sensory homunculus in the primary somatosensory cortex (SI). Results : The review supports the interpretation that there are two distinct representations of gen…

Altered functional connectivity in blepharospasm/orofacial dystonia.

INTRODUCTION: Blepharospasm is characterized by involuntary eyelid spasms. It can be associated with perioral dystonia (Meige's syndrome or orofacial dystonia). We aimed at studying resting-state functional brain connectivity in these patients and its potential modulation by therapeutic botulinum toxin injections. METHODS: We performed resting-state functional MRI and a region of interest-based analysis of functional connectivity in 13 patients with blepharospasm/Meige's syndrome in comparison to 13 healthy controls. Patients were studied before and 4 weeks after botulinum toxin treatment. Si

Functional imaging of allodynia in complex regional pain syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate cerebral activations underlying touch-evoked pain (dynamic-mechanical allodynia) in patients with neuropathic pain. METHODS: fMRI was used in 12 patients with complex regional pain syndromes (CRPSs). Allodynia was elicited by gently brushing the affected CRPS hand. Elicited pain ratings were recorded online to obtain pain-weighted predictors. Both activations and deactivations of blood oxygenation level-dependent signals were investigated. RESULTS: Nonpainful stimulation on the nonaffected hand activated contralateral primary somatosensory cortex (S1), bilateral ins…

Decreased cortical somatosensory finger representation in X-linked recessive bulbospinal neuronopathy (Kennedy disease): a magnetoencephalographic study.

BACKGROUND: Kennedy disease (KD) clinically presents as progressive lower motor neuron disease with minimal or no sensory impairment. However, electrophysiological studies found abnormal somatosensory-evoked potentials even in absence of clinical deficits. Little is known about possible influences of this sensory neuropathy on the central somatosensory processing. METHODS: In this study, the cortical topography of index finger representation was studied in 7 patients with genetically proven KD compared to healthy control subjects by means of magnetoencephalography using an established stimula

Normal somatotopy in SI of a tyrosinase-negative albino cat.

Because of known abnormalities in both the visual and auditory pathways of tyrosinase-negative albino cats, we mapped the primary somatosensory cortex (SI) in one such cat electrophysiologically. We detected absolutely no sign of abnormality in terms of somatotopy, and conclude that if anomalies do exist in the albino somatosensory system, they are either very subtle or lie outside SI.

Enhanced functional connectivity between sensorimotor and visual cortex predicts covariation bias in spider phobia.

The overestimation of the relationship between fear-relevant stimuli and aversive consequences, a so called covariation bias, might contribu … ed by connectivity between PCL and visual cortex, insula, primary sensorimotor cortex and secondary somatosensory cortex. Reduced covariation bias was predicted by connectivity between PCL and PFC. In response to spider pictures, the amygdala was functionally connected to somatosensory and visual areas. These results suggest that synchronous activity of sensory cortic …

Evolution of object identity information in sensorimotor cortex throughout grasp.

Reaching for and grasping an object seems a continuous process, yet somatosensory signals undergo dramatic state changes near the time of object contact. Tactile afferents start conveying contact forces, while on-going proprioceptive signals are altered as hand shape stops changing. How cortex maintains object identity in the presence of changing, multi-modal signals remains unknown. We quantified object-specific information in neurons of the primary motor cortex (M1) and somatosensory areas 3a, 3b/1, and 2 in male macaque monkeys. Surprisingly, despite the decrease in activity in each area im

Transcranial high-frequency random noise stimulation does not modulate Nogo N2 and Go/Nogo reaction times in somatosensory and auditory modalities.

Transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS) of the primary sensory or motor cortex can improve sensorimotor functions by enhancing circuit excitability and processing fidelity. However, tRNS is reported to have little effect on higher brain functions, such as response inhibition when applied to associated supramodal regions. These discrepancies suggest differential effects of tRNS on the excitability of the primary and supramodal cortex, although this has not been directly demonstrated. This study examined the effects of tRNS on supramodal brain regions on somatosensory and auditory Go/Nogo t

Somatosensory cortical progesterone receptor signaling regulates the episodic to chronic migraine transformation.

Women during their reproductive years are more susceptible to migraines than men, largely due to the effects of female reproductive hormones … slower in PRKO females than in WT females, and their recovery was quicker. Functional neuroimaging of the 6-OHDA lesion rat model of Parkinson's disease.

We characterized the unilaterally 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-lesioned rat, a well-known acute model of Parkinson's disease (PD), with [(18)F]-fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose (FDG) small-animal positron emission tomography (PET), which we compared with a drug-induced rotation behavioral test. In the 6-OHDA model, significant glucose hypometabolism was present in the primary motor cortex, substantia nigra, and pedunculopontine tegmental nucleus on the ipsilateral side. In contrast, neuronal activations were observed in the primary somatosensory cortex and ventral caudate-putamen area after lesioning. C…

Increased physical activity is not enough to recover astrocytic population from dark-rearing. Synergy with multisensory enrichment is required.

Elimination of sensory inputs (deprivation) modifies the properties of the sensory cortex and serves as a model for studying plasticity duri … ices. On the other hand, exercise alone only produces effects upon the astroglial population of the somatosensory cortex, and less so when combined with an enriched environment.
