BACKGROUND: Trace element determination in laboratory medicine is widely carried out by atomic absorption or emission spectroscopy. In the last decade, there has been a rapid growth in the use of inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry because of its strong detection power, and the possibility of multi-elements analysis in a single run.

Cadmium solubility and sorption in an arable clay loam soil that had received sewage sludge for 41 years were compared to an unsludged control in batch studies. The analytical performance of pyrolytic and non-pyrolytic boron nitride (PBN and NBN) platforms, attached to a commercially available graphite tube furnace, in electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS) for Cd was studied. An experimental study was carried out to investigate direct and direct plus trophic contamination routes of the crayfish Astacus astacus by inorganic mercury (Hg(II)) or methylmercury (MeHg). Direct exposure was based on low contamination conditions, 300 and 30 ng/L in the dissolved phase, respectively, during 30 d at 20 degrees C. Forty-five exposed workers from a printing facility at Menoufia University and 45 controls were chosen for this study.
