Sclerostin in ankylosing spondylitis: A meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess circulating sclerostin levels in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). METHODS: The databases of PubMed, Embase, Medline, Web of Science, The Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database (CNKI), China Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), Wanfang Med Online Database (Wanfang), China Science and Technology Journal Database (VIP) were used to collect all relevant published articles (up to 26 August 2024). The pooled standardized mean difference (SMD) with 95% confidence interval (CI) was calculated by the random-effect model. RESU…

Environmental and Genetic Determinants of Ankylosing Spondylitis.

Exposure to heavy metals and lifestyle factors like smoking contribute to the production of free oxygen radicals. This fact, combined with a lowered total antioxidant status, can induce even more damage in the development of ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Despite the fact that some researchers are looking for more genetic factors underlying AS, most studies focus on polymorphisms within the genes encoding the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) system. The biggest challenge is finding the effective treatment of the disease. Genetic factors and the influence of oxidative stress, mineral metabolism diso…

Application of methylation in the diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease, mainly characterized by perifibrocartilage osteitis of the sacroiliac joints and spinal enthesitis. To date, the exact pathogenesis of AS remains elusive. It is generally believed that AS is a multifactorial disease involving genetics, infection, environment, and immunity. Among them, genetic factors are the primary determinants of disease risk and severity. In recent years, epigenetic mechanisms such as DNA methylation have been extensively surveyed with respect to the pathogenesis of AS. This review summarizes the late…

Osteopoikilosis in a young ankylosing spondylitis patient.

Osteopoikilosis (OPK) is a rare benign congenital genetic-mediated sclerosing skeletal disease, characterized by the formation of osteosclerosis foci. OPK is usually clinically asymptomatic, but some patients (15%~20%) may have arthralgia and synovitis. OPK may be associated with rheumatic diseases and might lead to unreasonable over-examination in real clinical practice. Single cases of the OPK together with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) have been described. Here we present a 33-year-old patient diagnosed with AS coexisting with OPK. In the case considered, the combination of AS and OPK accompa…

Cardiovascular Risk in Patients with Ankylosing Spondylitis.

Objectives: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is an autoinflammatory, chronic disease. Patients with AS are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The link between AS and subclinical atherosclerosis is multifactorial and still not completely understood. The aim of this study was to examine the potential associations between carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) and different cardiometabolic biomarkers in individuals with AS. Methods: A total of 96 patients with AS were prospectively included. cIMT was measured via ultrasonography. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to find the …

Epidemiology and laboratory testing of Brucella spondylitis.

The average age of patients with BS was 52.29 ± 9.46 years, comprising 136 males and 31 females. Risk factors for BS include close contact with cattle and sheep and consumption of unpasteurized food. The positive detection rate using combined Rose Bengal Test (RBT) and Standard Agglutination Test (SAT) was 94.6%, whereas the positive rate for blood culture was only 7.8%. The most common clinical manifestations were fever (81.4%), back pain (88.6%), sweating (61.1%), fatigue (69.5%), and anorexia (65.3%). Hematological examinations often revealed decreased hemoglobin (18.0%), increased platelet
