The relationship between stereotyped movements and self-injurious behavior in children with developmental or sensory disabilities.

We assessed whether the stereotyped movements (SM) that are a defining characteristic of autism are discriminable from those observed in other disorders, and whether stereotyped self-injurious movements, which are excluded as exemplars of SM in DSM-IV, differ from other SM in severity or in kind. We used the Stereotyped and Self-Injurious Movement Interview to assess self-injurious and other SM in children with autism (n=56), intellectual disability (n=29), vision impairment (n=50), or hearing impairment (n=51) and in typical children (n=30). Cross-tabulation of scores indicated that self-inju

Parent report of stereotyped behaviors, social interaction, and developmental disturbances in individuals with Angelman syndrome.

Research examining autistic symptoms in Angelman syndrome (AS) is limited. The goal of this study was to further characterize the nature of stereotyped behaviors, social interaction deficits, and developmental disturbances in individuals with AS. Parents of 248 individuals between the ages of 3 and 22 completed a survey of autistic symptomatology by mail, the Gilliam Autism Rating Scale. Results confirmed a high degree of developmental delay and limited expressive language skills. In terms of stereotyped behaviors and social interaction, areas of convergence and divergence between AS and behav

Activity changes and marked stereotypic behavior precede Abeta pathology in TgCRND8 Alzheimer mice.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is not only characterized by cognitive decline and neuropathological changes, but also by non-cognitive behavioral symptoms like restlessness, sleep disturbance, and wandering. These symptoms are categorized in the "Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia" (BPSD). We investigated transgenic and wildtype mice of an APP transgenic mouse model of AD (TgCRND8) with respect to 24 h activity and spontaneous home cage behavior at 30, 60, 90 and 120 days of age. At all test days, transgenic and wildtype animals differed significantly with respect to activity patterns

Tolerance to amphetamine hypophagia: a real-time depiction of learning to suppress stereotyped movements in the rat.

To analyze how tolerance develops to amphetamine-induced hypophagia, the authors recorded real-time licking responses in rats given chronic injections of the drug and access to milk for 30 min. Initially, licking was greatly reduced and occurred only late in the session. The acquisition of tolerance was characterized by a decrease in the latency to initiate licking, a gradual increase in the number of licks, and a reorganization of the temporal licking pattern such that licks were distributed throughout the session, interspersed with pauses. On post-tolerance dose-response tests, licking was d

The stereotypy analysis: an instrument for examining environmental variables associated with differential rates of stereotypic behavior.

The Stereotypy Analysis, a means of analyzing environmental variables associated with differential rates of stereotypic behavior, was conducted with five persons having moderate to profound developmental disabilities. The process involves partial-interval recording of the occurrence of targeted behaviors and the presence/absence of specific environmental events. The Stereotypy Analysis was able to detect environmental events associated with stereotypic responding for 3 of the 5 subjects. Based on the results of the Stereotypy Analysis, indicated and not-indicated interventions were implemented

The development toward stereotypic arm kinematics during reaching in the first 3 years of life.

We recorded reaching movements from nine infants longitudinally from the onset of reaching (5th postnatal month) up to the age of 3 years. Here we analyze hand and proximal joint trajectories and examine the emerging temporal coordination between arm segments. The present investigation seeks (a) to determine when infants acquire consistent, adult-like patterns of multijoint coordination within that 3-year period, and (b) to relate their hand trajectory formation to underlying patterns of proximal joint motion (shoulder, elbow). Our results show: First, most kinematic parameters do not assume a

Effect of pre-treatment of some calcium channel blockers on catalepsy and stereotypic behaviour in rats.

Effect of pretreatment of intraperitoneally administered Ca-channel blockers Nifedipine (5, 10, 20 mg/kg). Verapamil (5, 10, 20 mg/kg) and Diltiazem (5, 10, 20 mg/kg) was studied on Haloperidol-induced catalepsy and Methamphetamine-induced stereotypy in albino rats. All these drugs reduced the onset of catalepsy, significantly increased the cataleptic score and delayed the onset and inhibited the Methamphetamine-induced stereotypy. The possible involvement of dopaminergic and adrenergic mechanisms and modification by Ca-channel blockers are discussed.

Cell trafficking in positive and negative patch-test reactions: demonstration of a stereotypic migration pathway.

The cellular and molecular events taking place during epidermal antigen exposure in sensitized individuals are principally well understood. Epidermal Langerhans cells (LC) are supposed to take up, process, and express a given foreign substance on their cell surface. The antigen is then recognized by T cells bearing the appropriate T-cell receptor (TCR). Because LC do not bear variable antigen (Ag)-specific binding sites, one could postulate that the epidermal exposure of any substance should activate LC and other cells of the skin immune system. To test this hypothesis, we analyzed immunopheno

Effect of hand splints on stereotypic hand behavior of girls with Rett syndrome: a replication study.

The purposes of this study were to replicate a recent report of the positive effects of hand splinting on the stereotypic hand movement of children with Rett syndrome and to evaluate the generality of these results to a different setting. Two 5-year-old girls diagnosed with early Stage-III Rett syndrome were introduced to hand splints in accordance with the multiple-baseline design used in the Naganuma and Billingsley study. Splint wear ranged from 30 to 50 days for the two subjects. Data were analyzed as a percentage of time and as actual time in minutes. Unlike the previous study, in which a

[Laterality in institutionalized patients with moderate, severe and very severe mental retardation and stereotyped behavior].

A total of 54 moderately (n = 13), more severely (n = 27) and severely (n = 14) mentally retarded persons living in institutions were dealt with in this paper. Qualities of their stereotyped actions were analysed and compared in respect to the used lateralization according to Cordić-Bojanin's modified scale and to Berg's scale for used lateralization. Results obtained pointed to the differences among stereotypes themselves in respect to the influence of social environment and the degree of retardation. Therefore, twisting of the body was regarded as the "mildest" form of retardation and passiv

Relationships between sensory stimulation and stereotyped behaviour in severely mentally retarded and autistic children.

The reinforcing properties of four sensory stimuli (continuous and flashing light, vibration and sound) which were under the subject's control, were examined and the effect on stereotyped behaviour observed. The subjects were 24 severely retarded children in three diagnostic groups; Down's, Rubella and a group which included neither of these diagnoses. Duration of stimulation with continuous light was significantly lower than the other three stimuli, but there were no differential effects on stereotypy, nor diagnostic group differences.

Effects of everyday discrimination on sexual minority people's experiences of health care stereotype threat.

Sexual minority people report higher rates of discrimination than heterosexuals, and this discrimination may interfere with people's experiences of healthcare services. Drawing from the Generations dataset, a national probability dataset of 1244 sexual minority people, we explore how experiences of discrimination across contexts are associated with expectations of discrimination within health care via health care stereotype threat (HCST) and attribution of discrimination, and whether these patterns vary across cisgender sexual minority subgroups. Results suggest everyday discrimination is posi

Crowd Evaluations of Entrepreneurs with Physical Disabilities: Stereotype Subtyping through the Lens of Benevolent Ableism.

We investigate how crowds evaluate pitches by entrepreneurs with versus without physical disabilities. Leveraging stereotype subtyping, we argue that entrepreneurs with physical disabilities are evaluated as a distinct subtype, rather than as people with disabilities or as conventional entrepreneurs. We hypothesize that benevolent ableism shapes how this subtype is evaluated, inflating both warmth and competence perceptions. Three experiments support our hypotheses, and key informant conversations with professional investors and entrepreneurs with disabilities corroborate the proposed mechanis

The 'Conceptual Distance Effect' in the Causal Effects Under Experimental Manipulation Between Attitude and Stereotype.

Understanding how attitudes and stereotypes influence each other is central to social cognition, yet prior findings have been inconsistent, with some indicating strong connections and others suggesting separation. To help explain these discrepancies, we introduce the construct of conceptual distance, defined as the evaluative proximity between attitude objects and stereotypical trait dimensions (e.g., warmth, morality, competence). Across four experiments, we first measured conceptual distance using a forced-choice task that estimated how closely each trait dimension aligns with positive or ne

Stochastic growth and ligand-receptor interaction-mediated stabilization generate stereotyped dendritic arbors.

Stereotyped dendritic arbors are shaped by dynamic and stochastic growth during neuronal development. It remains unclear how guidance receptors and ligands coordinate branch dynamic growth, retraction and stabilization to specify dendritic arbors. We previously showed that extracellular adhesion ligand SAX-7/LICAM dictates the elaborate and stereotyped shape of the Caenorhabditis elegans PVD sensory dendrite via binding to the guidance receptor DMA-1, a single transmembrane adhesion molecule. Here, we perform structure-function analyses of DMA-1 and unexpectedly find that robust, stochastic de

If colors have gender: Color-gender stereotype and the impact on impression evaluation and interpersonal interaction.

There are gender-related associations in people's perceptions and judgment of color. This study verified the existence of more diverse gendered colors in the Chinese cultural context (pre-study). Furthermore, individuals hold color-gender stereotypes at both implicit and explicit levels. In explicit measurements, individuals generally believe that colors with male labels have more masculine qualities, while colors with female labels have more feminine qualities (Study 1). In implicit measurement, participants' response times for target lexical categorization and judgments increased significant

Bike-Riding Training may Improve Communication Skills and Stereotyped Behavior in Adolescents With Autism.

This research aimed to establish whether 12 weeks of bicycle-riding skills exercises with massed and distributed practice frequency at low and high intensity affect communication performance and stereotyped behavior among adolescent boys with autism. Fifty autistic boys aged 13.3 ± 1.32 years participated in the study. The participants were divided into homogeneous experimental groups (N = 10) with dissimilar training frequencies and intensities, along with a control group. Pre-tests using the GARS-2 test were administered to assess stereotyped behavior and communication skills, followed by po

[Biological characteristics and clinical significance of stereotyped B-cell receptor in chronic lymphocytic leukemia].

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is the most common leukemia in the Western adults, although the incidence of CLL is relatively low in Asian populations. However, with the aging population, the incidence of CLL is increasing in China. The interaction between CLL cells and the microenvironment plays a crucial role in the recognition of antigens by the B-cell receptor immunoglobulin (BCR IG). The mutational status of the immunoglobulin heavy variable region (IGHV) is a classical prognostic marker for CLL. Over 40% of CLL patients exhibit biased usage of IGHV and highly similar amino acid seque
