Thalidomide: treatment of severe recurrent aphthous stomatitis in patients with AIDS.

An increasing number of AIDS patients have been noted to suffer severe recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS), a condition often associated with high morbidity that remains unresponsive to conventional therapeutic interventions. In two cases thalidomide was administered to successfully treat AIDS patients with RAS. Both patients experienced complete abatement of pain shortly after therapy was initiated. Ulcerations that were present for months resolved after three or four weeks of thalidomide therapy without any adverse effects. Thalidomide appears to be an effective agent for the treatment of se…

Vesicular stomatitis virus RNA replication: a role for the NS protein.

Synthesis of the vesicular stomatitis virus nucleocapsid (N) protein is required for viral RNA replication. The observation that the N protein forms a rapidly sedimenting species in the absence of other viral proteins and the description of complexes of N protein with NS protein led to the proposal that NS protein binds to N protein to prevent it from self-associating. We tested this model by analysing the physical properties of N protein synthesized alone in an in vitro replication system as compared to N protein synthesized in the presence of the NS protein. These findings were correlated wi…

Ultrastructural changes in bovine lingual epithelium infected with vesicular stomatitis virus.

Vesicular stomatitis virus was inoculated into the dorsal lingual epithelium of three cows. The reaction that developed in 72 h was characterized by severe acute diffuse glossitis with intercellular edema and necrosis of keratinocytes. Virions budded from the plasma membrane and were in the intercellular spaces. Reduplication of desmosomes was a prominent alteration, and normal desmosomes were within the cytoplasm. Intracytoplasmic desmosomes appeared to be formed by endocytosis after breaks occurred in the plasma membrane of one cell; endocytosis of loops of plasma membrane containing desmoso…

Lichenoid granulomatous stomatitis: a series of 12 cases and a literature review.

BACKGROUND: Lichenoid granulomatous stomatitis (LGS), characterized by a combined histopathological presentation of lichenoid reactions and granulomatous inflammation, is a rare oral disease. Although it has been reported previously, it has never been assessed specifically. METHODS: We retrieved cases presenting with both lichenoid reactions and granulomatous inflammation between January 1, 2013, and May 1, 2024, at the Peking University Hospital of Stomatology. LGS diagnosis was based on the histopathological presence of both lichenoid reactions and granulomatous inflammation. We retrospectiv…

Function of key ion channels in abiotic stresses and stomatal dynamics.

Climate changes disrupt environmental and soil conditions that affect ionic balance in plants, presenting significant challenges to their survival and productivity. Membrane transporters are crucial for maintaining ionic homeostasis and regulating the movement of substances across plasma and organellar membranes, particularly under abiotic stresses. Among these abiotic stress-responsive mechanisms, stomata are critical for regulating water loss and carbon dioxide uptake, reflecting a plant's ability to respond and adapt to abiotic stresses effectively. This review highlights the role of ion tr

A Rare Case of Allergic Stomatitis Due to the Consumption of Boiled Cassava.

INTRODUCTION: Allergic stomatitis is an oral inflammatory disorder characterized by a painful, burning sensation, or itchiness in the oral cavity which clinically appears as erythematous plaques, vesiculation, ulceration, and/or hyperkeratosis. The causative agents include drugs, dental materials, and food ingredients. Allergic stomatitis might develop after a person eats, touches, or inhales food allergen which then triggers the hypersensitivity reaction. The most common types of food hypersensitivity generally involve type 1 and type 4 reactions or a combination of both. PURPOSE: This case …

Helicobacter pylori and gastric hyperacidity, and their association with recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

Helicobacter pylori is an established cause of gastric ulcers. Its role in causing recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) remains controversial. Fifty-two RAS patients and 52 sex-matched controls were recruited in this case-control study. All subjects were screened for hematinic deficiencies and H. pylori. The latter was assessed quantitatively using the 14C-urea breath test. The χ2 test and Wilcoxon signed ranks test were used to compare H. pylori and hematinic indices between cases and controls, while conditional logistic regression was used to assess the associations between the occurrence of …

Identification of a Novel α-herpesvirus Associated with Ulcerative Stomatitis in Donkeys.

An outbreak of ulcerative stomatitis was observed in a donkey (Equus asinus) dairy herd. Similar lesions were also observed on the dams' udders and, sporadically, in genital areas. The lesions typically resolved in 1-3 weeks. An α-herpesvirus, Varicellovirus, genetically related to equid herpesvirus type 3, was identified.

Atmospheric H2S exposure does not affect stomatal aperture in maize.

Stomatal aperture in maize is not affected by exposure to a subtoxic concentration of atmospheric H2S. At least in maize, H2S, thus, is not a gaseous signal molecule that controls stomatal aperture. Sulfur is an indispensable element for the physiological functioning of plants with hydrogen sulfide (H2S) potentially acting as gasotransmitter in the regulation of stomatal aperture. It is often assumed that H2S is metabolized into cysteine to stimulate stomatal closure. To study the significance of H2S for the regulation of stomatal closure, maize was exposed to a subtoxic atmospheric H2S level

Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis: An Assessment of Antioxidant Levels in Plasma and Saliva.

INTRODUCTION: Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis (RAS) is a common oral mucosal disorder that affects 20% of the population worldwide. Factors such as trauma, stress, genetic, hypersensitivity, nutrition, immune disturbance and hormonal imbalance may disturb the oxidant and antioxidant balance of an organism and precipitate RAS, but the relationships are poorly understood. AIM: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant status in plasma and saliva of patients with RAS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty patients with RAS and forty healthy individuals were included in the study. The level…

The role of immunofluorescence in the physiopathology and differential diagnosis of recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

UNLABELLED: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a disease characterized by the periodic appearance of aphthous lesions on the oral mucosa, of which etiology and physiopathology are not well explained. Recent studies with direct immunofluorescence show controversial results. Some reveal that the basic disorder is associated with humoral immunity, while others point to changes in cellular immunity. Atypical forms of aphthous stomatitis may have its differential diagnosis carried out with vesicobullous diseases, such as pemphigus vulgaris. AIM: Check the presence of immunocomplexes in the muc…

Lichenoid and granulomatous stomatitis: an entity or a non-specific inflammatory process?

BACKGROUND: The presence of lichenoid or granulomatous inflammation in an oral mucosal biopsy usually suggests a distinct range of diagnosti … mmatory or neoplastic disease. CONCLUSION: We propose the designation 'lichenoid and granulomatous stomatitis' for the cases described in this study. The clinico-pathological features of a subset of these cases suggest an unusual drug eruption.

The levels of plasma and salivary antioxidants in the patient with recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

BACKGROUND: Despite plenty of research, the cause of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) remains obscure. It has been proposed that, the aetiological factors such as local trauma, smoking, vitamin deficiencies and viral infections lead to aphthae formation via final common pathway based on increased oxidative stress. The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx) alterations in plasma and saliva, and in addition uric acid (UA) in saliva, in patients with RAS and healthy controls. METHODS: Thirty-t…
