Cross-sectional field study comparing hippocampal subfields in patients with post-traumatic stress disorder, major depressive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder with comorbid major depressive disorder, and adjustment disorder using routine clinical data.

BACKGROUND: The hippocampus is a central brain structure involved in stress processing. Previous studies have linked stress-related mental disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder (MDD), with changes in hippocampus volume. As PTSD and MDD have similar symptoms, clinical diagnosis relies solely on patients reporting their cognitive and emotional experiences, leading to an interest in utilizing imaging-based data to improve accuracy. Our field study aimed to determine whether there are hippocampal subfield volume differences between stress-related me

Unraveling the Complexity: Exploring the Intersection of Panic Disorder, Dissociation, and Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Patients with panic disorder (PD) may experience increased vulnerability to dissociative and anxious phenomena in the presence of repeated traumatic events, and these may be risk factors for the development of complex post-traumatic stress disorder (cPTSD). The present study aims to find out whether the presence of cPTSD exacerbates anxiety symptoms in patients suffering from panic disorder and whether this is specifically associated with the occurrence of dissociative symptoms. METHODS: One-hundred-and-seventy-three patients diagnosed with PD were recruited and divided into two g

Genomic risk for post-traumatic stress disorder in families densely affected with alcohol use disorders.

Recent genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified genetic markers of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in civilian and military populations. However, studies have yet to examine the genetics of PTSD while factoring in risk for alcohol dependence, which commonly co-occur. We examined genome-wide associations for DSM-IV PTSD among 4,978 trauma-exposed participants (31% with alcohol dependence, 50% female, 30% African ancestry) from the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism (COGA). We also examined associations of polygenic risk scores (PRS) derived from the Psychiatri

Comorbidity of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Alcohol Use Disorder: Animal Models and Associated Neurocircuitry.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) are prevalent neuropsychiatric disorders and frequently co-occur concomitantly. Individuals suffering from this dual diagnosis often exhibit increased symptom severity and poorer treatment outcomes than those with only one of these diseases. Lacking standard preclinical models limited the exploration of neurobiological mechanisms underlying PTSD and AUD comorbidity. In this review, we summarize well-accepted preclinical model paradigms and criteria for developing successful models of comorbidity. We also outline how PTSD and

The Many Faces of Sleep Disorders in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: An Update on Clinical Features and Treatment.

Sleep disorders and nightmares are core symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The relationship seems to be bidirectional, and persistent disturbed sleep may influence the course of the disorder. With regard to sleep quality, insomnia and nocturnal anxiety symptoms, as well as nightmares and stressful dreams, are the most prominent sleep symptoms. Polysomnographic measurements reveal alterations of the sleep architecture and fragmentation of rapid eye movement sleep. In addition, sleep disorders, such as sleep-related breathing disorders and parasomnias are frequent comorbid condit

Associations Between Traumatic Stress, Brain Volumes and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms in Children: Data from the ABCD Study.

Reduced volumes in brain regions of interest (ROIs), primarily from adult samples, are associated with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We extended this work to children using data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study® (N = 11,848; Mage = 9.92). Structural equation modeling and an elastic-net (EN) machine-learning approach were used to identify potential effects of traumatic events (TEs) on PTSD symptoms (PTSDsx) directly, and indirectly via the volumes 300 subcortical and cortical ROIs. We then estimated the genetic and environmental variation in the phenotypes. T

Pharmacological Interventions for Acute Stress Disorder and for the Prevention and Treatment of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder in Children and Adolescents: A Narrative Review.

Traumatic events are common during childhood and adolescence and may lead to acute stress disorder (ASD) or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), both associated with developmental, cognitive and functional impairment. Although trauma-focused psychotherapies are recommended as first-line treatments, pharmacological interventions are frequently used in clinical practice despite limited evidence in paediatric populations. To review the evidence on pharmacological interventions for the prevention and treatment of paediatric ASD and PTSD, we reviewed the literature published up to December 2025.

[Virtual reality exposure therapy for post-traumatic stress disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders and anxiety disorders: Indications, added value and limitations].

The exposure in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a well-known intervention, widely investigated in scientific research. Several studies have shown the benefits of this intervention in the treatment of anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD) and post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD). The different exposure techniques are mainly based on the emotional processing of fear theory and use an emotional stimulation of fear, following by its habituation. However, new approaches have emerged and are based on the inhibitory learning theory. The virtual reality technology allows emot

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Recognition Using the fNIRS Dual-Attention Network.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a prevalent psychological disorder that can impair daily functioning and mental health. Current clinical assessment mainly relies on structured interviews and symptom scales, which may introduce subjectivity and inter-rater variability. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) provides a noninvasive approach for measuring task-evoked hemodynamic responses and may offer objective physiological information for auxiliary PTSD recognition. NEW METHOD: This study proposes an end-to-end deep learning framework, the fNIRS Dual Attention Netwo

Post-traumatic stress disorder: outline and updated insights focusing on occupational factors.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a stress-related disorder associated with substantial psychological distress and functional impairment, and it carries major relevance for occupational health because it frequently follows traumatic exposure in both high-risk professions and occupations not traditionally classified as high risk. This narrative review focuses on occupational risk factors, prevalence, work capacity, and implications for workers' compensation and return to work. METHODS: A non-systematic (narrative) literature search was conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE and Google S

Ericksonian hypnotherapy versus cognitive behavioral therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterized by persistent psychological distress and heightened neurophysiological reactivity. While trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an established treatment, Ericksonian Hypnotherapy (EH) may offer comparable benefits via different therapeutic mechanisms. In this randomized clinical trial, 63 adults meeting DSM-5 criteria for PTSD were allocated (1:1:1) to EH, CBT, or a waitlist control; 54 participants completed post-treatment assessments. Both active interventions consisted of 12 weekly individual sessions. Outcomes included PT

Evaluation of the Efficacy of Propranolol in the Treatment of Patients with Anxiety and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder.

Patients with anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) require combined psychological and pharmacological treatment, but evidence on propranolol's efficacy in these conditions remains insufficient. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 211 eligible patients (after exclusion) with anxiety-related disorders or PTSD (per ICD-11 criteria) admitted to Ganzhou Third People's Hospital from January 2022 to December 2024. Patients were divided into the control group (conventional treatment, n = 105) and the experimental group (propranolol treatment, n = 106). Main outcomes included heart r

Electrophysiological Markers of Proactive and Reactive Cognitive Processing in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Background: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is associated with well-documented alterations in reactive brain processing of stimuli or events, whereas little is known about proactive/anticipatory neural dynamics preceding and preparing for task execution. This study aimed to investigate both proactive and reactive brain control of PTSD patients during a cognitive task, using the event-related potential (ERP) method. Methods: Twenty-one PTSD patients were matched to thirty healthy controls. Proactive ERP components, such as the Bereitschaftspotential (BP), prefrontal Negativity (pN), and v

Eye-tracking and cognitive patterns in post-traumatic stress disorder: a scoping review.

Background: PTSD is associated with alterations in attentional processing and executive control, particularly in response to threat-related or emotionally salient cues. Early research emphasised sustained hypervigilance, whereas recent evidence indicates that attentional biases in PTSD are dynamic, context-dependent, and may also involve avoidance. Eye-tracking, especially combined with neurophysiological measures, provides fine-grained indices of visual attention and oculomotor control. Objective: This scoping review synthesises empirical findings on attentional bias and cognitive control in P
