BACKGROUND: Angiostrongylus cantonensis is a zoonotic nematode that causes eosinophilic meningitis in humans. Although its life cycle encompasses multiple developmental stages and hosts, the metabolic changes underlying its development and host interactions remain poorly understood. This study aimed to characterize the dynamic metabolomic profiles of A. cantonensis across its entire life cycle and to identify metabolic signatures associated with development and different host environments.
METHODS: Untargeted metabolomics using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry was performed on five key

Fatty acid and retinol binding proteins (FARs) are nematode-specific proteins that orchestrate lipid metabolism, development, and host immune response. Here, the antagonists of Nippostrongylus brasiliensis FAR-1 (NbFAR-1) were identified through integrating virtual screening, fluorescent ligand binding assay, and in vitro egg hatching assays. An in vivo mouse model was employed to evaluate anthelmintic efficacy against intestine-parasitized N. brasiliensis and brain-parasitized Angiostrongylus cantonensis. Forty-eight candidates were selected by virtual screening, six of them showed more than

BACKGROUND: Meningoencephalitis can arise from several infections, but those linked to the parasitic infection Angiostrongylus cantonensis are uncommon. This parasite, often transmitted through consuming raw or undercooked snails, can cause severe neurological complications. This case series highlights physiotherapy management of neurological sequelae in children with presumed parasitic exposure associated meningoencephalitis.
CASE PRESENTATIONS: Five pediatric cases of presumed parasitic meningoencephalitis temporally associated with raw snail consumption are presented. All patients were Yor

BACKGROUND: The detection of Angiostrongylus spp. larvae in intermediate host snails is a critical epidemiological investigation, essential for the effective control of disease outbreaks. Compared to molecular biological detection methods, lung microscopy, a traditional pathogen morphological detection approach, is susceptible to oversights and exhibits relatively lower sensitivity. However, we posit that lung microscopy offers irreplaceable advantages in the context of large-scale field surveys and can serve as a vital foundation for use in conjunction with other diagnostic technologies.

Angiostrongylus cantonensis, or rat lungworm, is a neurotropic parasite that causes eosinophilic meningitis. Although classically transmitted through ingestion of contaminated produce or undercooked snails or slugs, ritual ingestion of slugs as part of spiritual ceremonies has not been well described as a transmission route. We report two cases of eosinophilic meningitis in previously healthy adult men in south Brazil who developed subacute neurological symptoms, including progressive lower limb weakness, hyperesthesia, and severe neuropathic pain. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis revealed m

BACKGROUND: Angiostrongylus cantonensis (rat lungworm) is a zoonotic foodborne parasite causing meningoencephalitis among humans and animals. Neuroangiostrongyliasis is a globally emerging public health concern with several reported outbreaks; however, it remains neglected in the Philippines, where a lack of information on this parasite leads to underreporting and misdiagnosis. A good understanding of parasite epidemiology underpinned by accurate diagnosis is essential for treatment and control of parasitic diseases. Thus, this study aimed to determine the prevalence of Angiostrongylus spp. in

Polyphenols are phytochemicals commonly found in plant-based diets which have demonstrated immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties. However, the interplay between polyphenols and pathogens at mucosal barrier surfaces has not yet been elucidated in detail. Here, we show that proanthocyanidin (PAC) polyphenols interact with gut parasites to influence immune function and gut microbial-derived metabolites in mice. PAC intake inhibited mastocytosis during infection with the small intestinal roundworm Heligmosomoides polygyrus, and altered the host tissue transcriptome at the site of infec

Gastrointestinal nematodes cause serious economic losses in sheep production systems. To determine the prevalence and risk factors associated with these parasites, a study was conducted on 595 sheep in Córdoba, Colombia. Prevalence and parasite burden were determined using the McMaster technique. Larvae were cultured from feces to identify the nematode genera. For the analysis of associated factors and parasite burden, data means, medians, and confidence intervals were compared. A georeferenced data analysis was performed and an epidemiological map was constructed. An overall prevalence of 88.

A 2-y-old Brahman bull was presented with progressive hindlimb ataxia and paraparesis that led to recumbency. Postmortem examination revealed scattered pinpoint, red-brown foci within the brainstem and gray matter of the spinal cord, and a larger lesion within the spinal cord at the level of T13. Histology of the section of T13 contained cross-sections of nematodes consistent with Parelaphostrongylus tenuis. Evidence of inflammation was present in other affected areas of the spinal cord and brain. DNA extraction and nested PCR were performed, which demonstrated 98% identity and 100% coverage t

BACKGROUND: Cyathostomins infect virtually all horses, and concomitant infections with 10 or more species per horse is standard. Species-specific knowledge is limited, despite potential species bias in development of disease and anthelmintic resistance. This is the first meta-analysis to examine effects of geographical region and cyathostomin collection method on reported composition of cyathostomin communities.
METHODS: Thirty-seven articles published in English in 1975 or later, in which adults of individual species were systematically enumerated, were included. Seven regions; North America

Climate change and other weather factors are associated with several infectious diseases, but are rarely reported as being associated with nematode infection. Eosinophilic meningitis (EOM) is an emerging disease worldwide caused by the nematode, Angiostrongylus cantonensis. It is transmitted through various agents such as snails and slugs. Temperature and rainfall are associated with snail population. There have been no previous studies on the relationship between weather and EOM. This was an ecological study. Numbers of EOM patients and weather data in Thailand's Loei province from 2006 to 20

BACKGROUND: Angiostrongyliasis is an infection caused by nematode worms of the genus Angiostrongylus. The adult worms inhabit the pulmonary arteries, heart, bronchioles of the lung, or mesenteric arteries of the caecum of definitive host. Of a total of 23 species of Angiostrongylus cited worldwide, only nine were registered in the American Continent. Two species, A. cantonensis and A. costaricensis, are considered zoonoses when the larvae accidentally parasitise man.
OBJECTIVES: In the present study, geographical and chronological distribution of definitive hosts of Angiostrongylus in the Ame

BACKGROUND: This study was performed in order to gather recent epidemiological data on feline endoparasites in Swedish cats. Faecal samples from 205 outdoor cats were collected by their owners and submitted to the National Veterinary Institute for analysis. The study population was comprised of cats with access to an outdoor environment and with no history of anthelmintic treatment within the last 3 months. Intestinal parasites were detected with a centrifugal flotation technique and Baermann larval sedimentation was performed to detect metastrongylid lungworms. Eggs, larvae and oocysts were i

In endemic regions, it is not uncommon for patients to be co-infected with soil-transmitted helminths and malaria. Although both malaria and many helminth species use the lungs as a site of development, little attention has been paid to the impact that pulmonary immunity induced by one parasite has on the lung response to the other. To model the consequences of a prior hookworm exposure on the development of immunity to malaria in the lungs, mice were infected with Nippostrongylus brasiliensis and 2 weeks later challenged with Plasmodium berghei. We found that a pre-existing hookworm-induced t

Angiostrongylus vasorum is a nematode that lives in the pulmonary arteries and right cardiac ventricle of domestic dogs and wild canids. It is increasingly being reported in several European countries and North America. This parasite induces inflammatory verminous pneumonia, causing severe respiratory disease in dogs. In some instances, coagulopathies, neurological signs and even death may occur. Scant data are available regarding the occurrence of A. vasorum in Portugal. Therefore, sera of 906 shelter dogs from North to South mainland Portugal were collected. ELISAs to detect A. vasorum circu

The nematodes of the genus Skrjabingylus (family Metastrongylidae) can parasitise the nasal and frontal sinus cavities of different carnivore species. Until recently, Skrjabingylus petrowi Bageanov & Petrov, 1941, has mainly been described in pine martens (Martes martes Linnaeus, 1758) and sables (Martes zibellina Linnaeus, 1758) sampled in the European part of the former Soviet Union. Newer finds in the stone marten (Martes foina Erxleben, 1777) and from different parts of Europe suggest, however, that the species might have a broader host-species range than previously assumed and be geograph

Angiostrongylus cantonensis is a metastrongyloid nematode in the family Angiostrongylidae. It is the cause of angiostrongyliasis (rat lungworm disease), which manifests as eosinophilic meningitis. First described in 1935 from rats in China, A. cantonensis was placed in the genus Parastrongylus in 1986, but most workers have not adopted this treatment. The taxonomy of A. cantonensis and related worms is largely based on adult morphology, notably of the male bursa. However, identification of infective third stage larvae is more difficult. The natural life cycle involves rats as the definitive ho

Smooth muscle cells are major components of bronchiolar wall. Bronchiolar smooth muscle is reported to increase in some veterinary pulmonary disorders, but such assumption is not supported by detailed morphometric analyses. The present investigation aimed at quantitatively evaluating bronchiolar smooth muscle in healthy and diseased pig lungs. Our results suggest that bronchiolar smooth muscle cells significantly modify in size and number under different disease conditions, namely parasitic bronchopneumonia and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae-induced enzootic pneumonia. Further studies are needed in

An adult male guinea pig (Cavia porcellus) with a 1-month history of hind limb paresis, torticollis, and seizures was euthanized and submitted for necropsy. Gross examination was unremarkable, but histologic examination revealed multifocal eosinophilic and lymphoplasmacytic choriomeningitis and cross sections of nematode parasites within the leptomeninges of the midbrain and diencephalon. Morphologic features of the nematode were consistent with a metastrongyle, and the parasite was identified as Parelaphostrongylus tenuis by polymerase chain reaction testing and nucleotide sequencing.
